Great vid! Very well laid out and easy to understand! I know this is 7 or so years old, but I would suggest a few things: 1. When the box is metal, it has to be grounded as well... Especially if you're using in wet/damp conditions... 2. Use E-tape around the wire nuts 3. On the switch, Black is line and red is load... Line=What's coming from the source... Load=What goes to the instrument...

Perfect! I basically viewed this video in my head from start to finish, so I was very happy to compare notes with you and see that I'm on the right track. I'm building 3 of them with open covers, attaching then side by side to a small piece of wood. The lights are meant to simulate candles ( no flicker box available). The lamp op will basically slide the 3 switches randomly almost like a small audio board. wish us luck with the effect! (Subscribed).

14/3 is plenty for 1k dimmers. 12/3 supports 20A and 14/3 supports 15A. The dimmer only supports 8.3A so the 14/3 is overkill already.

Dave, could you comment on the difference between using a wire nut (twist on wire connector), crimping, and soldering? What's the reason for choosing the wire nut here? Thanks much.
@GripTips7 жыл бұрын
mlangsottile honestly? I didn’t really have a reason. Just seemed the easiest. Though I suppose one could argue one being better than another. Like crimping is probably better if there is a jacket. I could also see soldering being better as to make sure of a strong connection but then again, probably need to hear shrink a jacket on. Just to avoid connections with the other wires. If I had to guess I’d say they all probably would be fine choices.

Wire nuts are usually used because they're quicker and easier to change, if need be. Personally, I hate wire nuts. I've seen way too many of them just fall off, leaving wires exposed. I always prefer to solder and either heat-shrink, or wrap (at least a few coats) with electrical tape. Heat shrink is better protection, as some electrical tape loses it's adhesion when it gets old. That's just me, but I spent almost 20 years making cables (mostly audio, to be fair)...

Hi Dave, any tips on avoiding dimmer "buzz" for sync sound ?
@GripTips4 жыл бұрын
Dimmer buzz? Hm. This is new to me, the dimmer itself is buzzing?
@barnabycoote4 жыл бұрын
@@GripTips sometimes it's the fixtures and bulbs themselves that get an audible 50/60hz buzz when dimmed below a certain level.
@GripTips4 жыл бұрын
@@barnabycoote oooooh now I gotcha. Im over here like "the dimmer is buzzing, the ef?" hahaha. Im actually currently looking up why HMI's buzz for an ep I am currently working on. If I come across something I'll let you know.

Can you use this dimmer with Quasars LED tube lights?
@GripTips6 жыл бұрын
Skyler Bocciolatt funny you ask that, my next episode that I’m currently editing is about quasar tubes and yes I use the dimmer I built here on them. It works!

Grip Tips that’s awesome! I use a barn door 1k squeezer with them now and I get a bit of flicker on the low end, how’s the flicker on this dimmer?
@GripTips6 жыл бұрын
Skyler Bocciolatt None until it reaches about 10-20% on the dial

Hey Guys. Long story short I had an issue on a job back in October with Quasar Cross Fades and that Barn Door Squeezer mentioned here. It sent me on a quest to find answers regarding LED units and Dimmers. I FINALLY got around to building this dimmer for both Halogen fixtures and LED fixtures (thanks for the awesome build Dave) I also did a dimmer test with Dave's build, the BarnDoor Squeezer and an LED compatible dimmer switch. It's posted here: www.modernmotionvideo.com/cinema-blog/safe-dimmers-for-led-fixtures Keep up the great work Dave!
