@@bandeco75 It was a power supply and replacement floppy disk drive but when fixed it didn't boot so the tech guy had to do something to sort that. It cost £240 labour and took 3 hours labour just to get the power board replaced. I picked the power supply up for around £100 from a guy in the USA. You can't get ASR parts in GB as it was not a huge seller back in the day. Everyone wanted an Akai. I was going to buy one but the guy in the music shop got me to try the ASR. @bandeco755 жыл бұрын
To make a stereo sample mono is simple. If you want to use both sides simply go to edit amp, side scroll to pan and put it at zero. At that point you have both sides in the center because you are by default in stereo layer link mode. If you want to separate left and right then go to edit layer scroll sideways until you see stereo layer link and set that to off. You are now editing left and right layers (samples, stereo sides) independently. You can now edit them in any way independently. Try moving the sample start point ever so slightly for a big stereo spread. Fool around, have fun.

@AT-eh2eo5 жыл бұрын
@@bandeco75 It definitely powerful to say the least. I started on the SP 404, so its a whole other beast. it has timeslice and all that jazz but it just works in a way that i'm still getting used to. like when you make your chops and put it onto your keys, the first octave will have the original sample pitched up and down as a whole, while the auto chops you made will start on the next octave. i dont really understand why, but im just starting to wrap my head around the interface. What makes me giddy to think about is the amount of modulation that is possible with keyboard samplers. it's obviously more like a synth with the LFO's and envelopes, as a opposed to drum machine type samplers. seeing other Keyboards like the ASR 10 in action helps to look at it with the intention of creating a TRITON workflow, not an MPC workflow on a Triton. something about having having 88 keys instead of 16 pads makes the workflow feel different for the better haha i guess i just gotta learn the shortcuts.
@AT-eh2eo5 жыл бұрын
the fader is also so much more fun to chop with than just a jog wheel.

A T that’s the beauty of using the ASR with an MPC. Just using the keys to manipulate sounds is liberating while using the pads on the mpc for beating out drum patterns is unbeatable. Plus there’s some cool filtering you can do with the mpc although it’s limited. The ASR challenges me creatively. I haven’t reached it’s end or anywhere near it.

Good question. Honestly I really am not sure of the whole process and rig. It’s a situation I’ve never felt I needed. You would basically need to get the SPDIF format into wherever you are sending your samples. SPDIF is it’s own coaxial cable so that’s where it starts. Just curious, what are you doing with this?

Why might I not hear any output when the headphones are plugged in and volume is up?
@bandeco75 Жыл бұрын
Well… a few things could be happening. I’m assuming we’re talking about the ASR here which has a dedicated headphone output, so it’s possible the headphone output itself is possibly kaput in one way or another. Wether it’s something as simple as a bad Jack or something more involved as bad headphone amp or broken path, it’s a good idea to check the main output. Hook something up to the main outputs and see if you have any output there. And when I say hook it up to something I mean something with a speaker(or separate headphone Jack that you know works and gets signal from other things) that accepts line level input and amplifies sound. (Stereo, boombox, mixer, etc). The next question is what exactly are we trying to hear. Without knowing anything about your situation, I’ll start with the very beginning. Don’t be offended. I don’t know if you’re experienced with this machine or if you just found one laying around (does that happen?) so again, please don’t be upset when I ask if you have loaded any sounds into the bank. The ASR does not have its own sounds, you have to feed it. If you are an experienced user you are no doubt thinking “what a jerk, you are wasting my time”. But sometimes people are really just starting out. If that’s the case, please watch the video more. Moving on…..Load multiple instruments and select them and see if there’s any good news. No? Ok. Let’s move on. Next, put a signal into the machine, through the audio input Jack in the back. (line level or microphone or guitar, there is a switch in the back to adjust input level and also a trim knob) make some noise and see if the input indicator lights on the audio track are showing anything. If you see green or green and red lights flickering about above the audio tracks, you are successfully receiving a signal. Press the audio track button to insure the red light (the one directly above the audio track, not the blinky input indicator light….confusing, I know) is on which indicates you should be monitoring (hearing) sound. Again, if this is all very obvious to you, and seems elementary, accept my apologies. If it’s not very obvious and find yourself more confused , watch the video some more. Moving on……The reason we’re checking the audio tracks is the lights tell you if it is receiving signal and we’re taking the instrument setup factor out of the test. I have made instruments that are dead on all but one or two keys which is not usual but it’s best to take some random factor like that out of our troubleshooting process . If the audio track lights are active, you’re getting a signal and that’s that and you know sound is happening somewhere. If you’re feeding it a confirmed, hot signal and it’s not responding at all, no lights and you have adjusted the input switch and knob, that’s bad. You will need the doctor at that point. If you have loaded up instruments( multiple instruments) and none of them make sounds and you have checked the audio tracks and still no sounds. Press edit audio track and make sure the signal is routed to main outs and check to see if the audio tracks are at output level 99 and pan them all the way left and all the way right If still nothing then I really suspect an internal issue and the patient needs a doctor. This is beyond my scope. I really hope it’s something simple and you don’t need a repair. Best of luck!

@@bandeco75 hey thanks for the reply! I figured out how to just monitor the line inputs. Turns out I got a HEAP of problems. Number one the data slider doesnt work and when it does it just randomly goes all over the place. Number 2 the sound on the inputs is all glitchy, and cuts in and out, and sounds all messed up punctuated by brief moments when it sounds good. (I did turn the fx off) Number 3 it gets REALLY warm. I had left it running for about 3 or 4 hours and when i came back the transformer was very hot (and so was the RAM and boards near it). This thing is ROUGH and needs a lot of service apparently.

Love the content! I have a question... I’m looking for a modern day 88 key-keyboard somewhat like that Ensoniq line. I have a MPC 1000 and really want to chop up sounds as quick as possible with the onboard sampling/keys and with my other hardware as well without a computer or software, but I also don’t want to sacrifice any quality towards the acoustics. I like to play both Rap/Classical music so it’s a bit of a dilemma lol. Are there any keyboards that’ll help me with that? Or I’m I better off with the ASR/ Ensoniq line. Thank you
@bandeco754 жыл бұрын
Adrian Nunez hmmmmm. Not sure I understand everything you have in mind but I’ll try to answer some of your concerns. In terms of sonic quality, the ASR10 is 16 bit so it’s not going to sound like a computer would sound when sampling in 24 bit or higher. Of course many people would say it sounds “better”. But then of course “better” is relative to what you’re doing with it. It has character. The ASR10 falls short as a performance keyboard in a sense. Again this depends on what you’re performing. If you’re creating your own sounds and don’t care much about keyboard feel (although I think the 88 is weighted) it could work but if you’re taking it to gigs, I wouldn’t do it. It’s heavy (over 60 lbs. ) and you’re going to beat it up and wind up needing repairs on an instrument that is becoming increasingly precious and not easy to find techs or parts for. If you are looking for an instrument that has more “traditional” sounds, then the ASR is probably not what you want. If a versatile sample editor with sonic character, and a layout that lets your creativity loose sounds good, it’s worth a try. If you don’t care about effects or stereo sampling there’s also the EPS which is usually easier to find at a lower price but it’s 13 bit so it’s sound is even “crustier”. It’s also tougher to expand. Also there’s the EPS16 and 16plus. Not sure if they were all offered in 88 keys. No matter what you get, just make it work. Get what you can afford. Don’t focus on the gear. You make the music.

@@bandeco75 oh wow, ive been looking for something like that. does it require replacing the whole scsi drive or does it connect into the scsi jack on the back??
@bandeco754 жыл бұрын
A T it plugs right into your ASR10 SCSI interface.....assuming you have one. They weren’t standard issue. If you have a 25 pin jack on the back you’re good to go. If you have a black plate, like I did, you need a scsi interface. Stray light engineering. That’s who you want. If you already have the interface, look up chicken systems and they will supply you with an excellent Scsi2sd for a very reasonable price and you’ll be set. It’s a world of difference. I fucked around with disks too long although I really did enjoy drawing and painting on them.

Zyon Iman I guess it’s a matter of preference. The EPS/ASR line definitely has character in its sound and function. The way it’s set up really influences the way I work on it and ultimately the outcome. I also find it very fun to use, which to me is everything. If your aim is strictly to sample and sequence then there are a lot more options in terms of gear that are newer, smaller, more affordable, with greater power of connectivity and capable of many more functions but none of those options will feel or sound like an ASR10. Personally, I don’t care about newer, smaller, cheaper, connectivity, etc because it doesn’t get me closer to what I’m trying to do (which is usually very simple/basic). I Also use the ASR for tons of other stuff besides beat making. It’s a very versatile, musical, fun tool which has always inspired creativity for me. So to answer the question “are they worth it” is tough. It’s a feel thing and it may not be for everyone. If your wondering whether or not to buy one and your on the fence, keep this in mind: as long as you don’t drastically overpay, you’ll get your money back if you decide to re-sell it. Make sounds, don’t buy sounds!!!!🥁

Ya know I could swear I put that in the tutorials somewhere but I don’t see it. HUGE OMISSION!! So…. Command >sytem-midi and just scroll left (or right) til you see copy o.s. Have a formatted disk ready. It doesn’t take up a huge amount. You can add it to any disk as long as it has the room. You don’t need to start with a blank disk. It will prompt you to insert the source o.s. Disk and then the target disk when it wants you to. Very easy.

I also advise making several copies of the os on any disk that has the room for it. It sucks when your disk suddenly doesn’t work and you’re out of os copies. Make a little mark on it to show it has the os. It has saved me more than once!!!

Nice tutorial, thanks a lot. Btw, your speaker placement is quite unorthodox!

The output expander is crap though , the way it multiplexes the sounds really make the samples worse when A/B ed from the main out quality
@bandeco75 Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Can’t say I ever compared the difference. I really only use it when tracking out and that involves more factors in the process. Going into a DAW it’s really no big deal to track out everything in multiple passes just using the main out. If you’re going analog, it’s a bit trickier but not terrible either.

@@bandeco75 the asr has enough tools onboard to pre -process the samples anyway so the multi out isn't a deal breaker in any way , the sampler that goes beyond it in that respect is the Yamaha a5000 , you really don't need any outboard process with that one

SCSI works with OS 3.53, you cant run SCSI smooth on 1.6, that's why some guys also hail 3.53.

Interesting. What you mean by run it smooth? I haven’t had any problems with it. Been using SCSI2SD for at least a few years and haven’t had any problems. Maybe it was a problem with older SCSI systems? Maybe it’s cuz I use pretty short samples? I dunno. Anyway, like I said, I haven’t had any issues.

@bandeco75 Oh not scsi2sd or zulu, yeah exactly certain hard drives, the black one with the handle - particularly, it was like a Lacey before Lacey you'd see them stacked in studios a lot, can't remember the brand but with that exact hard drive, 3.53 is the way to not crash on the ASR-10
