MY FIRST NOT POSITIVE COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE // I arrive in Oslo by bus and the first night I have my first not positive Couchsurfing experience. It was not entirely bad at all, but when Couchsurfing asked me if I would stay again, I had to answer no. The next day I met my other host in Oslo, who took me to a sporty bike tour up on a mountain outside Oslo and then we cooked a nice dinner together.

Although the following: - I obviously had the permission of my host to show him on my KZbin channel - I never said I've had a BAD experience with him, but all in all a neutral one - I have a very precise a strong reason to post this vlog on my channel, which I'll explain later - I specify multiple times that the problem has been that we had different standards of hygiene, where I admit that MY standard is very high - I list all the positive aspects of the experience, which were many after one and a half year of receiving complaints about this video, I decided to trim all the parts where the face of my host shows. I hope this is going to be enough for me to be able to keep focusing on my present and future videos, instead of constantly have to come back here and explain myself. Once and for all, I have strong reasons for wanting this vlog on my page: This channel and the whole idea behind it is based on the existence of a hospex community like Couchsurfing, that's why I made so many videos about the platform. I both make videos where I explain how the platform works and how to use it safely - especially for solo female surfers - and vlogs where I narrate my actual experiences with it. Safety is a huge issue on Couchsurfing and many women avoid the platform because afraid of safety issues. My goal is to encourage them to overcome their fears and give it a try. I do so by showing my experiences as a solo woman. Since 99% of my experiences are smooth and simply positive, I thought this was a precious chance to show that things can also be not as smooth (and therefore give credibility to my message), but - if taking the right precautions - still safe. The message I want to spread with this video is that Couchsurfing does naturally not always offer smooth and pleasant experiences, but the not positive ones are usually related to small details, rather than serious safety issues (again, if the right precautions are taken, which I talk about in my other videos), as this vlog shows. Mentally ill people are everywhere in the world, and occasionally unfortunately also on Couchsurfing. But those cases are the smallest fraction of the total of the experiences that people have made in this community. Every person on this planet has a brain, feelings, emotions and a certain empathy for others. Let's remember that when we experience fear of other people.

@David Roberts sorry I disagree entirely. I am a host on CS too and I would be fuming if, instead of rating me only on the platform and having a personal chat a surfer would put my face on a different platform like KZbin and accused me of a lack of personal hygiene ... what if his employers see it? He's been as kind as to open his house to her, just to be shamed in front of the world? He, exactly like me, has only subscribred to host people and get references on the CS platform, not on other social networks. It is perfectly ok to keave a critical/ negative reference on CS but why on KZbin? If I were him I would file a complaint with CS management because this is a clear infringement of CS Terms of Use IMO. As for my part I will ask CS if shaming a person on KZbin putting the person's face is permitted: if so I'll unsubscribe from CS because this is clearly not what I subscribed for. I am a teacher... imagine if I have a personal problem with a surfer and I have to discuss it with my students because a surfer has posted a video with personal information about me?

@@WhatashameMaryJane you are not only wrong in "feeling you had the right" and that your approach was correct. This is straight up illegal in Norway (slander - which it actually is even if it's not just an alleged crime, but even after a conviction - and of course, when it is not a matter of crime, but damaging someones personal reputation). Hopefully as this video has so far reach, you will actually face legal actions. jusleksikon.no/wiki/%C3%86rekrenkelse And, either way, even if there is a law in Norway that you actually broke (and weirdly brag about) that hurts someone else, it is highly immoral. i don't understand, i mean filming the lack of expectation for an unpaid accommodation seems too much, don't you feel its like putting a public shaming of the host who's apparently has been trying to be generous enough to let you stay? first, if your hygiene standard is that high while you don't have such an option to get nearby hotel or other host to stay, then why don't you take a time to rid the mess or simply put your coat or shirt to cover the sheet? i never read anywhere in couchsurfing that the surfer is entitled of fresh towel, bed sheet or toiletries...and then it will following with the host should be a free guide, free driver, and give a free breakfast lunch and dinner too during your stay? wow then if its a standard of the host in couchsurfing now then i'll leave my job and travelling around the world and use the couchsurfing to pick up any house with bvlgary service and facilities for free! I mean, if you were expecting that, why don't you put a budget for paying the hotel? i just don't see it 100% right to put it in youtube...sorry MJ i saw your other video are good but this one seems a bit unethical...

I wholeheartedly disagree. In fact she said that the website she secured the host through, asks users to leave a rating; so obviously the couchsurfers experience is valuable information for the next potential couchsurfer. Furthermore, this is NOT an issue of "lack of expectation", she wasn't commenting on the amenities offered/not offered, she was strictly commenting hygiene and sanitary conditions which shouldn't even have to be an expectation, it should be a given! How can you call her expectations high? Did you see what that place looked like? I could literally smell it through the screen! Yuckkkk She's not shaming him; he clearly KNEW she was a youtuber and KNEW what his house looked like, so I'd argue he's not at all ashamed of his living conditions (although he damn sure should be).

@@tiffanyi5645 while honest reviews are useful on AirBnB and Couchsurfing, she didn't keep her comments there. She obviously shared her negative review here on KZbin, where it has very little value. I doubt many viewers are on couchsurfing, headed to Oslo, and are potentially interested in staying with aforesaid host. On the other hand, the potential ramifications for the host who was just trying to be a nice guy (and bought her a free beer and meal) are very high.

Not all men are same and not all women are same. Not women are same like you, Tammie. For some women it's normal to sleep in the same room with a man, which they met the same day. Oh girl my only experience on Couchsurfing was so terrifying I never tried it again. My host in Paris came on to me. I was so scared I thought if I try to leave his apartment (I arrived after midnight and we spent about an hour chatting so it was middle of the night) I thought if I try to leave now he’s definitely going to assault me. So I pretended to be super sleepy and crawled into the sleeping bag with several layers of clothes on. One of the worst nights of my life! I barely slept. And in the morning he went to work and when I woke up I realized I’m locked in! As soon as he returned I was out of the door. I’m not sure what I did wrong to bring this on me but I literally can’t bring myself to try Couchsurfing again.

One of the most important ones is: meet the host before evening, so that you have time to get a first impression and understand if it's the case to stay there or not. Of course I would be ok, otherwise I would never make a video like this! A lot of people seem to be very uncomfortable with this video though, so probably there are many people who have a very different sensitivity than mine. Honestly I'm tired of spending hours of my time on this old video just to answer to all the comments and explain my reasons. There's no way I'd leave a comment unanswered and I don't want to turn off the comments because it would shut down the dialogue, which is the best thing about a video. I'm thinking about cutting all the clips where you can see his face, do you think people will stop commenting? Otherwise I should hide the entire video from the channel, but it's my only chance to show how things can go "wrong" (which is not that wrong after all) when you use Couchsurfing in a safe way. It's an important piece of my educational content about Couchsurfing. I'd be pleased if you gave me your opinion on this.

Honestly. If he had tried it on with you in an inappropriate way, or you felt he endangered you in some way... I would totally understand this video. But, to post a video about how he smelled, didn't have clean sheets etc. that seems excessive. It actually seems kind of mean-spirited, given that Couchsurfing is really about making friends. He fed you, bought you drinks, came to meet you when it was completely out of the way. And, you repaid him by embarrassing him to the world? This is the kind of thing that you could have just left in a review, if you felt compelled to write something to warn the next person. And, frankly, if you were that uncomfortable with the sheets, why not sleep on that big sofa in the living room? I don't know... this just doesn't feel right. I'm only 7 mins into the video. Perhaps things take a major downturn from here. But, needed to get my thoughts out.

You - as a seasoned Couchsurfer - know perfectly well that there's a rather good filter system on Cocuhsurfing, and by simply putting in "Oslo, Norway", "Have References", "Accepting Guests", "Male", "Italian" and "Boat", you'll end up with only one person...

Woa! Gross! Seems like a nice guy, but someone needs to talk to him about his personal hygiene. I do feel sorry for him as I expect that he will be mortified when he reads your review. These things would probably not bother some ladies. But not many, I think... I think that sleeping in the same room as a male host isn't a great idea, despite what you say. It is very difficult to accurately judge a man's character after short acquaintance and some day you could be badly mistaken. I once let a girl sleep in my room at a hostel when she was stuck with nowhere to stay after the office closed for the night (I slept on the floor, she on the bed - with fresh sheets! - even though she said it was OK if I wanted to be on the bed too). But I would not do it again. Too risky, especially since I'm married now. I thought about the whole thing afterwards and realized she may have had plans for me.

I I normally appreciate Mary Jane's videos *but*... It is perfectly ok to leave a critical/ negative reference on CS but why on KZbin? If I were him I would file a complaint with CS management because this is a clear infringement of CS Terms of Use IMO. As for my part I will ask CS if shaming a person on KZbin putting the person's face is permitted: if so I'll unsubscribe from CS because this is clearly not what I subscribed for. I am a teacher... imagine if I have a personal problem with a surfer and I have to discuss it with my students because a surfer has posted a video with personal information about me?

I think I've already took the time to explain you the situation in another comment, and yet again I find your same comment here. The fact that I would have filmed and published the video was agreed between me and my host since the beginning of our relationship. He didn't have to host me, he wanted to, while being perfectly aware that my experience, good or bad, would have been published. You will never host me because you would simply say no to my request in the first place, so I don't understand why you're making so many problems. You ask why publishing a CS review on KZbin? To spread the Couchsurfing message, make the platform bigger and better by encouraging people to use it. I invite you to watch my other dozens of videos about Couchsurfing, because I haven't published this video as a mean person who wants to denigrate her host. There is a contexts in which I've published this video that you seem ignoring completely. I have the goal of educating people to use Couchsurfing better and bringing more educated people on the platform. I think it's a noble goal.

@@WhatashameMaryJane well, I certainly have learnt something from this video: I have to be even more careful as a host and be sure that nobody takes pictures of me or my home because they can spread them everywhere on social media. As for bringing more educated people on the platform I do not think this is possible: there will always be all kinds of people who use or rather misuse it for their own personal interests... The only possibility to avoid possible headaches is avoiding hosts who do not convince us from the beginning: as you said there had been many red flags even in the pre-hosting communication and that should be enough to say he was not the ŕight host for you. My suggestion is to always follow one's guts feeling and not go to that host if something feels fishy from the start. What has been pefectly good for over 100 surfers can be definetely unacceptable for us, since we are all different. That seems to me a much better piece of advice.

Ciao Noemi. As a Northerner, I know Southerners pretty well. Infact my own family has a whole branch in Neaples, with which we've always had a rich and pleasant exchange. I myself lived in Rome with a boyfriend from Basilicata for three years, during which I've known many people from all over the South: Apulia, Basilicata, Campania, Calabria, Sicilia. I've been in Sicily several times and stayed with locals. So now which one of the two contradictory statements would you like to take back, that what I said was very misunderstandable or that I talked without knowing? Thank you for welcoming me in your beautiful land. I will come visit and make videos there in less than two months and I'm glad to revisit Sicily after a few years that I haven't been there. @@WhatashameMaryJane I feel that you have made yourself almost "too clear" that the issue with your host was "VERY personal". We are human beings and all that we do or say is "personal" / based on our personal "luggage", no matter how "objective" we try to be. From your story and your video I could bring up logical arguments to sustain your position - such as before inviting a person somewhere, free or payed for!, a host should make sure she/he can offer the basics (in your case: hygiene, sheets, towels, blanket, room temperature etc.) and those basics should be known to the host / discussed, as humans do not have the same standards even in small communities / between friends; only after providing the basics a host should offer more (such as a beer / a night out) ... because Maslow and his pyramid... Regardless of the arguments you should not be "afraid" to speak up your mind and a host should not feel offended receiving a bad review - humans are divers and judge other humans differently / you cannot be liked by everybody not even if you are the dullest person on Earth, and certainly your host is not a dull person.

Well, to be honest Maria, you shouldn't saying this kind of things cuz he wasted a lot of his precious time. See I'm a 16 year old boy and I have already hosted 12 travelers but as in my experience they never had way of thinking bout couchsurfing like you have. I'm also not that able to provide them a totally clean things but they were fine with it. So, I think you should change your way of thinking about couchsurfing.
@WhatashameMaryJane
@WhatashameMaryJane 5 жыл бұрын
Tell me more about it. I'm open to change my way of thinking, if the one I have is not reasonable enough. I think that there are some basic rules of common sense when it comes to hospitality. Of course everyone is free to offer hospitality even if he/she doesn't follow these rules of common sense, but has to give notice in the "house section" of the profile. I met a couchsurfing member the other day, an old lady, and I read her profile: she describes perfectly her apartment. She admits that the apartment is very messy, that she cleans very rarely and her shower doesn't work properly. She warns that any person with average standards would find it totally inappropriate, but she still offers hospitality to whomever still wants to go there. This is exemplary behaviour for me. My way of thinking about Couchsurfing is that we don't have to settle to not decent standards just because it's a free platform. If we justify every kind of behavior "because it's free" the platform will eventually degenerate - as it has already happened in a certain way - and we will end up justifying even sexual harassment. I strongly believe that we need to keep the level of the offer to a certain minimum level and providing a place to sleep with average hygienic conditions for that country is essential. Also, I don't understand what you say about time, since I never mentioned such an issue in the video.

@@WhatashameMaryJane I am just amazed to see this kind of 'it's ok attitude' even from the teenagers about cleanliness and how they try to teach others to be grateful to the host just because the host has offered the stay for free! I sometimes wonder if they at all know the meaning of the guest, hospitality or hosting. Perhaps they think that a guest/CS is someone, who is homeless, doesn't have enough money to stay at hostels/hotels and is desperately looking for free accommodation. Perhaps they also confused 'free' with 'cheap' and that is the reason why some of them accepts requests on CS to invite the guests in their 'dirty' flats with their 'cheap' hosting manners! Just like how there can be bad hosts on the CS, I am now convinced that there are also bad guests on the CS, and the bad guests are those who do not complain about it when the host takes them for granted by offering a 'cheap' stay instead of 'free' accommodation.

In hospitality industry we have a joke about "champagne taste beer budget" i hope this one can clarified the hospitality means to u also in couchsurfing if u dont feel the host up your standard you may free to leave or simply be a human by helping them to improve their place to be clean n tidy as an exchange you were staying there for free, as well to create a good vibe and make an impression that you are a good guest who deserve a good host...so no one asking anyone in couchsurfing to accepting harrassment n dirty pig cage whatsoever as you always have an option to leave instead of put your standard as a global standard to anyone who might be different...remember, no host getting paid from this and if i knew the couchsurfing is all about people rating people then i must be so naive for thinking the whole time that couchsurfing is a platform of people who's being super generous in sharing their place, their trust, their travel experience and their knowledge about the destination to make the travellers got most easiest way to explore the destination in a local sight, cause that's what i did the whole time in couchsurfing...if i knew its about rating people then i will bragging a lot about "if you were stay with me i'll love you to the moon and back and treat you like a prince and princess and i'll be a slave for you!" I like a lot of your videos, but this video is a miss for me. I know that her higiene is poor, but shamming him and exposed her face from all the internet is not ok. I watch a lot of videos saying bad experiences with couch surfing, but all videos that I watch the surfers never say the name of the person, show her house or their faces. It’s a little lack of empathy to the person who host you and pay some stuffs to you. Share your experiences to the world (helps a lot), but never shame someone publicly.

To the best of my knowledge Couchsurfing isn't about the place, isn't about the situation of the accommodation, it's about people, experience, making friends, sharing ideas, etc... , I mean come on for god sake you're a traveler, not a real estate broker! You only have the right to give your impression about the situation of your host, and his/her personality, if he/she is mentally and physically OK, if there's any act of rudeness or harassment in some way or another during your stay, other than that it'll become obvious and clear libel If you have personal sensitivity or you set yourself very high standards for things, just book a 5 stars hotel, and rate them to 0 if they don't match your standards. my only wish is to be lucky and not to host a traveler like you

Hey Hazzard, he was the one who offered me hospitality, answering to a public trip where I described what I do in my life and where I stated clearly that I would have filmed everything for my vlog, from the people to the apartment. You can also see in the video that he was aware of the fact that I was vlogging and happy about it. I thank Andi Jones who also perfectly explained that I was very complementary towards my host as a person and as a host, in every aspect except one, and I'm sorry that my goal of showing that the problem I've had was very subjective and relative to my issues has partially failed (or maybe you don't read the text parts of the video..?). As for the anonimity, if you noticed I made sure not to mention his CS name or picture, nor his surname.

I don't think you can set up standards when you're basically offered a place where to crash out at for free, you could've called him out on a face-to-face convo on the hygiene thing instead Vblog it (and it doesn't matter whether he gives you permission or not) and exposing him to the rest of the world, it seems so morbid, wrong, like a vivid spectacle. People have different constructs and beliefs systems, you cannot expect everyone to live up to your standards, next time elaborate a better CS request that really lives up to your standards.

another example on why couchsurfing is dying ( yestarday they started to ask a fee membership due to covid, a clear symptoms it will die very very soon ). After the very beginning where it was a small group of true travelers who respect each other, have money to travel and just love the idea on how technology can enable meaningful new meeting, it soon became, for many, the idea of FREE Hotel and free blame. There's nothing free in this world, without money you stay home, holidays are not a basic neeed. Girls, specially young pretty girls, pretends to be treated like princesses from host for free, sometimes without bring a small present, without leaving a thankful review or even negative reviews. In what world are you living where everything is for granted ? Wake up people, I guess couchsurfing is too open for the general public, probably they fail to create a system where who decide to offer her property for free needs a level of security and respect that is not common today, especially between young spoiled people who thinks everything is quick, easy, accessible.

to me this illustrates how couchsurfing is not safe for young women or maybe anyone. Im sure you must have vetted this guys profile on the site to some degree, if his previous reviews were at all accurate then someone surely would have mentioned the state of his place, yet it seems they didnt as you decided to stay with him. This raises into question the validity of the whole process, not only the state of the lodgings but the hosts themselves. As for showing his face, probably not appropriate without consent, maybe you got it i dont know. Im glad he was overall a decent enough guy albeit a messy one.
@WhatashameMaryJane
@WhatashameMaryJane 4 жыл бұрын
Of course I had his consent. I get consent from all my hosts before even filming, to publish my videos online. I don't see how this experience showed you that CS is not a safe service. This is the worst experience it has ever happened to me, and I've never been in a place where I was unsafe. My host has been kind with me the whole time, which is what's really important. The fact that his hygiene standards were different than mine have nothing to do with safety and they are also personal, as it shows the fact that the last of the many positive reviews he had didn't mention anything about it.

Hello Emma, thanks for sharing your opinion, but I think I can decide by myself what I "should" or "should not" do. I slept with men in their underwear hundreds of times in my life, they don't harass you just because you are sleeping in the same room. As much as my host in this video didn't harass me at all. And I'm very sorry you thought that he did, it's very disrespectful in his regards.
