Ciao Mary Jane, saluti dal Veneto! I discovered your channel last month and I am now watching your older videos. I was really enjoying this one but then I saw the comment section and I thought about giving my 2 cents on the topic :) I am Italian, I am a white woman and i come from northern Italy too (Venice), so I think I can get why Mary Jane wasn't so "ashamed" of using the n-word and I equally don't really get the full meaning of it for a non-white person from the USA. And I even studied foreign languages at university. The thing is, these topics are deeply connected to one's own culture, and even if US and Italy are both western countries, there are deep differences in our societies which are rooted in our history, culture and past issues, like - guess what - slavery. I think Mary Jane and I are pretty much the same age so I think I can understand what she means when she says that to us Italians THAT word she used doesn't sound so bad. We grew up in the late 90s/00s listening to music from the USA like rap, hip hop, where the N-word is SO widely used. I think of 2pac, Missy Elliott and such artists who used the n-word A LOT in their songs. We hear those songs but we don't really grasp the full meaning they may have for a black person living in the US. Not because we are uneducated or bad or disrespectful, but simply because we were born and raised in a different context where an issue like racism is present but is not SO sensitive and strong. So given how easily it was used in that kind of music, to us that N-word has always sounded simply like slang - I know it really is not, i'm just explaining what it means to us. We live in modern times and have access to so much information we think we can get to know everything and that everyone understands one another, yet there are things you will never REALLY know until you get to experience them firsthand. This was an example I think and now that I - as an Italian woman - I discovered how serious the thing is, what I'll personally do is I will try to explore the topic, get information and listen. But please, before getting triggered by this video or by someone else not from the US using THAT word, just assume WE simply don't know how sensitive the thing is for YOU. Thank you :)

With language, it's often about the local context, which comes from local history. America has had a racist historic background, whereas Italy might not have been so racist-- southern Italy and Sicily even is populated with a good mix of people from Africa and Mediterranean and all over which probably helps to not make things racist.

I agree but I also think that every examples you wrote is related to african-american artists the only can use this world with more “freedom” just because ad you wrote they know how much sensitive is for them (also in a lyric I think you can have more motivations to used it). But as for another kinds of slavery or brutal and inhuman treatment which caused the death of million people (as Shoa or the dictatorial punishments/civil war in all the world as ex Jugoslavia war o Utzi vs Tzuzi massacres for example) we just take note, know ancient and modern history to be bold and stay wake to vigilate. I understand what you mean but it’s not a good reason to minimize conflittual worlds that too much people use today to denigrate who are “different”. P.s. I ‘m Italian too

Giulitta 16v, I think you only find this acceptable in Northern Italy...in regions like Veneto, Lombardia, Piemonte. No wonder you guys are such big supporters of the Lega Nord. I have relatives all over Italy and all know the meaning of the word so stop with the excuses....all of Italy knows not to use the N-word except for you guys in Northern Italy . You should have used the words RAP or Hip-Hop like everyone else in Italy. You should be ashamed!!
@giulietta16v

@@ursinomatt i am not ashamed because I did not offended anyone, I just tried to analyze the topic from an external point of view. I wasn't making an excuse for the use of the word, I was trying to understand the WHY. And it's very funny that you bring right wing politics into the discussion because, as a matter of fact, i am not and i have never been a supporter of the Lega. And saying that in northern Italy we are all supporters of the Lega, well that's another big stereotype.

We were in Italy about 5 years ago for a month and I found Italians to be the warmest, most helpful people! Once, on a bus in Rome we asked a person for directions and the lady tried to explain, but she could see we were confused so she said we should get off with her at the next spot and she walked us to where we needed to go. How nice is that! I had spent about 5 years in Italy when I was a kid, back in the ‘50s, but my Italian was a little rusty, though serviceable, and everyone was very patient and seemed pleased that I tried to speak in Italian and was patient with my mistakes. Great country! I miss it a lot. Thank you for your wonderful series!

Thank you for sharing these nice experiences! I would say Italians are usually warm people - more in the South than in the North though -. I feel that usually you can find the excess though: you can meet people who will even walk you to where you have to go, or you can also find people who are very indifferent or even rude. Also, we are extremely warm with tourists, for some reason. I think we like the idea of hosting someone who is just visiting. Not the same attitude with immigrants, unfortunately.

So i think our attitude with immigrants is justified because of a poor country were south is an abandoned place by government and despite of that we're hosting a huge amount of people that no other country is taken at this moment, so i think we need to stop complaining against people with our BUONISMO. If we do an evalutation on the big number even with immigrants italy is doing a good job...not strange that people doesn't wanna mess with other problems...they've already lot of problem for them living in a country were is no job and the minimum wage just doesn't exist. After four trips to Italia, mostly Roma e Toscana and only as far north as Venezia, I have found that in both small towns and big cities that people have always been very helpful. Especially if the first words I say are, "per favore, dové la strada per....."?". I also find this is true in other countries as well. Paris has a bad reputation much like New York but I've found that the people in both places and other places as well are helpful to lost or confused travelers who approach them with the respect of knowing a few words of the local language.

Ciao Mary Jane!! I stand with you in the very first part of the video! Growing up in an Italian family, they used this word a lot, and just as you pointed out, you were not using it in a bad way. My family is very similar in that way. Some areas of Italy may understand the meaning of the word in American eyes, but what i think a lot of people fail to see, especially a lot of Americans, is that when my family, or yourself, used the word, they were not using it in a derogatory way. It is merely a description in their eyes. My family never meant anything bad by it, it was just because it was how they were taught to describe people/songs/etc. that have the attributes that align with it. It was never meant to cause harm, unless of course they meant to use it that way, which they never did. It was just their culture and how they were raised. They were not raised to use it as a word of hate, to them it was just a word. All of these people saying you were wrong for using it do not know how you, or people such as my family, were raised. It is different for everyone. The only reason i know not to say the word is because i grew up in America where it is heavily engrained to not use it, but people from other countries, where racism is not as prevalent, do not need to worry about this kind of stuff. I applaud you for being so honest, you were not using it in any sort of bad way and i think you are brave. Just because some people did not grow up in a place where hate is so prevalent where they have to watch what words they say, does not mean everyone should. Cultures, and languages, are all different and i am glad you shared your specific perspective on such controversial topics because i think everyone’s opinions matter. Grazie per il tuo video! Forza Italia!!! ❤️🇮🇹

I worked in NYC for a few years and it is surprising how helpful your neighbors can be. I worked in a picture frame shop and left during the afternoon to pickup a sandwich. Someone came into the back of the shop picked up my briefcase and not finding anything of value, threw it into an alley. The man running the store next to me, found it and returned it. I had never spoken to him before and never knew that he recognized my briefcase when he saw it. Yes, New Yorkers can have a gruff manner but they are also helpful when you need it.

Buona Sera Mary Jane. First and foremost I would like to congratulate you for being so educational to us Americans. Lord knows we are, or I should say.. some of us are categorically misinformed about culture in general. When I first decided to start learning Italian 7 months ago, I began to realize that my sense of well-being was returning after so many nightmarish experiences. I still cannot understand why Italians had been reduced to nothing more than overused hand gestures, pasta and spaghetti, and Mario accents! In a short time I've learned how diverse and beautiful the Italian culture actually is. I want to learn more . For me it is a lifetime commitment and not just some temporary whim of mine. I should have done this 30 years ago. But you know what they say: youth is a disease that everybody experiences in due time. If you don't treat it soon, it would make a hell of a procrastinator of you! That's what happened to me, unfortunately. I feel that I have been given a second chance. If I fuck this up, there will be no third chance for sure. Grazie mille per tua storia! God I hope I said that correctly. Im not using the translation guide! Salute e cin cin 😃🍷

Hi Jane, I am impressed how well you speak the English language not being your native language. I enjoy your videos. I hope to visit Italy some day. Just to point out, you have done exactly what you have mentioned that Europeans don't like about Americans when they visit Europe. That is that they go to a big city and generalize the whole country to be as such. Being originally from New York City but having moved West 14 years ago, I have to say that New York, or for that matter any big city in the US cannot represent the rest of the United States. The inner country is much different than the inner cities. Different dynamics. New York City is "rush-rush", extremely diverse in culture and foods. Although very friendly, they mind their own business. The North East is different than the south. Texas is...well, Texas is Texas. The Mid West, North West, North California and Southern California are different. In fact, some of these areas speak with a little different accent and expressions. Even some their cultural foods are different. I am glad you had the opportunity to visit New York, Just remember that New York does not represent the whole United States. Keep doing a good job. I enjoy your videos.

Hi Caesar, thanks for your nice and informative comment. I surely did exactly what I said not to do. Infact, those two videos were shot one and a half years apart from each other. One and a half year of travelling, one and a half year of constant learning. (This video is one of the very first I published on my channel!) Also, I think I got tricked by the fact that I visited so many cities outside of NYC (and rural areas too), so I thought I were legitimate to say "USA", but they were all in the East Coast. So I guess I should have said "Italy vs US East Coast". I hope I improved my content as the time went by (infact in my last cultural comparison video I made sure to specify New York vs Italy, even also "Italy" is a very broad concept!) Thanks again for your contribution 🙂

There are MANY regional differences in the US. What you see in NY isn't the same everywhere. One cultural thing within the US is this: New Yorkers / East Coast people are very direct and about showing respect in subtle ways that those of us in the Western states don't necessarily pick up on. The midwest and Western states are much less direct , more about "just be nice" that was drilled into us by our families. In the business world, I much preferred working with New Yorkers for their straight talk.

I wonder if you've realized now why the n-word, and the touchiness about calling out someone's ethnic background is "problematic"...unfortunately, America has become even more touchy in the two years since this video...and I feel mostly not in a good way. Almost every topic is getting too politicized and people are self-segregating based on personal political preference-- including assuming "the other side" is pure evil. The politics of today comes down to either you want socialism or you do not. So there is no left or right when it comes to socialism, it is only up or down. I cannot believe America has came to this. The areas you have visited, more so than not, favor socialism and get very uptight and are less tolerant when you disagree with them. Americans tend to be even more warmer and tolerant the more you move away from the areas you have visited when it comes to politics. The MSM paints many Americans as racist pigs when we are really not. Our issues are really with the media and socialist leaning corrupt politicians that care nothing about American citizens. I would just avoid joining in any political or racial conversations, but do listen carefully

Interesting and Grazie, Mary Jane! A few thoughts: 4. Drinking. There are a lot of people here in USA who don't drink to get drunk as fast as possible (although there are those who do, as you said). It just depends on the person and the type of people with whom you socialize. I and my friends don't even drink alcohol at all. I don't care if other people do drink, though. Not my business as long as they don't drive or act rudely/badly because of their drinking. 3. Dating. I've never heard that watching a movie with your date means that sexual intercourse is expected to happen. Not a thing as far as I know. You are under no obligation whatsover to kiss a guy (or fornicate with him for that matter) simply because he bought you dinner. Some people are sleazy like that, and others are not. Again, it depends on the morals and values of the person you are dating. If you're attracted to him, and he is attracted to you, and when the time is right you can do some smoochin'. There used to be one of the common mores of society that would say "I don't kiss on the first date". Some people still believe in that, while others don't. 1. Helpfulness of the people. Interesting, because my friends in Europe thought Americans were more friendly and helpful, while we thought Europeans were more friendly and helpful. Interesting that we both thought the same thing about each other, so I don't know how to explain that one other than "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". As far as NYers being rude, it's a stereotype, but stereotypes are usually based at least on partial truth. Some NYers are very rude, and others are very nice, so it's probably the same as anybody from anywhere else. Depends on who you meet.

Italian example: saying someone is from the South can be simply descriptive (though depending on tone, that too could be used insultingly). But using the perjorative “terrone” is not ok. Just like calling someone Italian is fine but calling them a “wop” isn’t. Its really not that hard to understand. 😊 The n-word has a horrible and violent history. No need for any white personal to ever use it.

Mary Jane: a few thoughts about your observations about America. 1) America is a big country, and people's thoughts and actions about nearly any subject can vary pretty wildly from one place to the next. It sounds like your experience in the US is pretty much limited to the northeast; if you are able, spend some time in the South and on the West Coast. I think you'll notice some pretty profound differences. 2) Dating: I'm sure your description of your dating experience is accurate, but I suspect peoples' expectations vary quite a lot with age, region of the country and education level. 3) American's helpfulness: I'm really glad you found us to be so helpful! A lot of us are - because that's our nature. My personal experience is much the same as yours, and I suspect it has a LOT to do with your approach and attitude when you ask, but I can assure you that it is not universal! Also.... people (especially men) tend to respond quite positively to pretty women with a warm demeanor - like yours. I'm sure that has worked in your favor. Keep up the good work!

Hi Mary Jane, I think Elizabeth's is a legitimate question. Italian legislation about citizenship was changed several times over the past years, and people that can demonstrate Italian ancestry can obtain Italian citizenship in very generous terms, compared to other countries. I think I heard that, after the latest laws were approved, there are 60mil Italians in Italy, but over 80mil potential Italians scattered around the world. Coming to live here in italy with a good pension from a developed country (pun intended) could be an excellent idea. Italians do that a lot with Portugal and it's becoming an issue. In Portugal they give you a huge tax reduction to relocate with your pension there. I think it's a bit unfair for governments to go down the route of this kind of selfish competition between UE countries, but good on the oldies, getting to live a bit better than they would in Italy, albeit far from home and family. If Italy passes another pension reform (we change rules once every few years...) and tries to fight fire with fire, it might be that Elizabeth's pension could really be worth more than expected when she actually comes to reside in Italy for good. Coming to Elizabeth question: the South (Campania, Calabria, Basilicata, Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia, I would add Molise and Abruzzo) is generally less expensive (I am talking about living there, not being a tourist) than the North. Small villages are less expensive than big cities. The inland is less expensive than by the sea. Those are just a rough general rules, with lots of exceptions. Having said that, there are some small villages - some of them are really lovely - that will PAY YOU if you relocate there (similar to what in the USA Vermont does for young couples). For example Candela (Foggia), where they give you an economical aid for relocation, or Sambuca (Agrigento) where they even sell you a house for 1 euro (provided that you will spend at least 15k to renovate it). Those villages are usually in the mountain areas, with less and less people living there, usually only old people. Elizabeth, where are your Italian ancestors from? It could be a nice start to start looking around that part of Italy. If your surname ends with an "e" (Faraone) then it is likely your family is from Sicily, maybe from the Palermo area. If it ends with an "i" (Faraoni) then it would be more probable an origin from the central regions of Italy. If it ends with an "n" (Faraon) then it would very likely be from the Venice area. I know that the surnames of our "emigranti" would undergo some changes when registering in foreign countries, so I am not taking for granted that your surname was originally Faraone, and not Faraoni or Faraon. Blessings and stay safe. Ciao, s.

Ciao!

Ciao Antonio, capisco benissimo a cosa ti riferisci.

Hey Mary Jane, I think this may help: I think you will understand why you don't use certain terms about race here because well... We were really shitty. When you realize that people have been burned, murdered, raped, etc. while certain words have been uttered to them, the words become "loaded". I think here it is just considered good manners to not use words that are used while we know people have been through those tragedies and horrors while those words have been said. For instance: I have a friend who is a gay male. When I was in high school he would be called "f*g". But it wasn't just the word... Other young men would pleasure themselves into condoms and then put them in his backpack as a "taunt". So, as a friend of this gay male, I don't like hearing that word... because the only people who said that word are the guys who would pleasure themselves into condoms that they would then put in my friend's backpack. I suggest looking up the word "loaded" as far as being referred to a term. I think what you are struggling with is actually that you just don't understand the history, which makes it to where you can't understand our issues with certain words. Americans ACTUALLY want to be good neighbors. & I can't be a good neighbor if I am saying words that strike fear into my neighbors. Make sense? It's just about trying to make people comfortable. I know in some of your other videos you talk about "individualism" as being an American trait - and you are very correct. BUT, what you may NOT see, is actually the micro-expressions we use with fellow Americans when we want them to feel "safe". I hope this makes sense? It's our way of actually being communal in a way that you may not think of, being not from here.

That along with “When Cultures Collide”, which also teaches the differences between cultures and countries and how to interact with them. These two give you a pretty rounded, though generalized, idea of how to approach people in each country. Now, what’s needed is the same guide but in a dating context. Who will write that book?!

Aho, kemenwipematethi? I have watched a few of your videos and think you are very informative. The comparisons you are blanking the rest of us Americans under are very regional especially when it comes to New York as it is foreign to most of us. Most of our country are unlike these places and are pretty laid back and not as restricted in tongue and actions. So comparing the rest of us with New Yorkers is like saying Italians are no different than the rest of the European Union. This video kind of blew me away when you discussed the dating, the kiss and sex with the movies. I have never heard of such obligations although dating has became a very loose term for sex. It is true that most want to talk about being exclusive. And about the glasses or contacts, you do not need a new exam every time you order as long as you have a valid script within the eye exam time frame of one year, the doc will give you extra scripts if needed. Be safe in your travels and try to visit other areas away from the huge socialist ran cities. With no disrespect to the regions, the areas that you visit, we call the land of fruits and nuts. If you have time, please look at the Harmless Farmer. He is a great ambassador for the typical American in kindness, strength and family. Anyway, the truth is that New York is as foreign to most of us as is was to you in very many ways. My mind eased after getting on the road when I saw a picture of a topless model on the side of a semi trailer. Within a couple days I meeting with locals for morning spritzers. I really enjoyed my experience over there. Life is much slower in Italy compared to the USA. Italians seems to live for today while Americans live for tomorrow. Some of my experiences: I did not like paying for toilet use, I just about bought horse meat at the market, Italians are very crazy drivers, cannot understand why men stay at home till 35, say many very old places to enjoy, people where very nice. WOW! I really respect your honesty about saying "nigger music", I think your honesty and even saying the word again in this video shows how little you actually know about it. As a Black Woman who is also Latina (I'm Puerto Rican born in Brooklyn, NYC), it was VERY triggering to hear you speak like that! lol I laugh because I was surprised by how strong my reaction was, especially since you said it out of ignorance and not malice. However you knew and acknowledged that Italy has their own "offensive" word for Black people and the fact that you said "it's ok to pronounce it, if it's clearly playful" tells me you still have more to learn and grow. The Italian word would not be offensive to you because you are not Black; but do the Black people in Italy agree with you? I'm pretty sure that the concept of "White Privilege" is very poorly understood in Europe because it's only starting to be understood here in America, but what you just said is a pretty good example of it. I just discovered this page today after seeing the video of you trying Italian food in the Bronx (under-cooked spaghetti and meatballs LOL) and it brought me here. You seem very sweet and genuinely down to earth; I don't hold this against you at all. I just don't accept that it's "a cultural thing"; because it's really an uneducated thing. I believe that when we know better we do better! #LoveFromBrooklynNYC

Hi Tiffany. You're certainly right, I need to learn a lot about American culture in general. This video was shot after my very first trip to the US, so I was still very unexperienced. If I had to reshoot it now, after several other trips and many months spent in New York, I would not even mention the racial topic, because I've seen that is way, waaaay, waaaaaaaaay more sensitive than an European like me could ever imagine. So you're absolutely right that I don't know anything about racial problems in the United States. Before I end this and shut my mouth I just want to suggest you to differentiate when you talk about "white" people. Not every person in the world, because has white skin, is privileged. "White privilege" is strictly an American concept. There are black inhabitants in Europe, but they are a very small percentage of the population. They come typically from the Northern states of Africa and they come on their own, because they want to move to Europe and not because they are forced to do so. I've never been addressed as a "white woman" before coming to the United States for the first time. There is no such a concept in Europe. There is just NOT.

Sure, MOST people would understand that you are not from our culture, and don't get the history behind it, but you will definitely find people that DON'T understand that and they will be more offended than you expect. Btw back to the 1st comment, I’d say pretty much everybody knows not to use that word in the US, however here in Italy there’s not a word that bears such an offensive meaning in our vocabulary, so the girl most likely just made a naive mistake due to the n-word not having use nor space in the Italian language (e no rigaz negro, pur essendo generalmente considerato offensivo qui, se usato non porta con sè la stessa gravità di nigga lì)

Sei divertente, schietta, sincera, intelligente e gradevole.

Here's a good rule of thumb to use in the US when it comes to deciding whether or not something you said was perceived to be racist: Did you string together any combination of words and then utter them out loud? Y = racist, N = it was probably still racist, but they can't prove it and hate you even more for that fact alone. Also, and I know this one will leave a foul taste is some people's mouths, but if you were 200lbs with a missing tooth and wearing hand-me-downs there's a solid chance that lots of people would have passed you over before someone let you use their phone, especially in a metropolitan city.
