Thanks for this, Chris. I appreciate your insights about Jack--I've been wondering why this one didn't resonate with me as much as Home and Gilead did, and I think you're right about it missing moments of deep sadness. Also, I never fully got why the two of them were as into each other as they claimed to be. Still, that opening cemetery scene was amazing. (And then after reading Jack, I read Bowlaway, which opens in a cemetery, too. My happy little gothy heart.)

Thank you Monica! Love to hear your thoughts. Yes, I think there was something missing in this one - and you're right, the spark just didn't seem that obvious. But I always appreciate MR's writing anyway. If there's good prose, I can forgive a multitude of sins (as it were).

Yes, it is. We meet Della briefly in *Home* but this book has the relationship between her and Jack at the centre.
