Gilead, Lila, and Home are the first three books in a series by Pulitzer Prize winning author Marilynne Robinson. This is a book summary and review. I love these books and I would like you to please read them. Thanks.

I think your description of Lewis' apologetics is in danger of being a bit of a caricature. If you haven't already read Michael Ward's book 'Planet Narnia' I would strongly recommend it. Love the channel - very much appreciated

Hello. Should I read the three (or four) books simultaneously? Thanks in advance for any input.

I loved Housekeeping, but I had to give Gilead to my kid (halfway through) on account of its account of goodness made me, who does not weep, wail like a toddler. she's incredible. and Flaubert/Trump? hahahaa. come ON, mate. hahaha.

Agree with you 100% about Robinson being a better apologist than Lewis. C.S.Lewis wrote a ton of greatly intuitive and metaphorical books but he never gave me the impression of someone who made a real effort to fully understand the fathers of the church and even less to align with their doctrine. About Gilead - at the beginning I was close to hating John Ames, for how his (or his father’s?) forcing his wife into giving even her last pennies away in charity was bordering with abuse, and with his sense of entitlement. But the second part of the book really elevates it (and I loved it). Did you have any similar thoughts about Ames ?

I totally agree. I wonder why Robinson added that detail about him, it makes him very unlikable at the beginning.

@@CalebSmith3 This is really great to hear. Sometimes when you have a strong reaction to a part of a book that you don’t hear anyone else having, you start thinking you might be crazy 😄

I just don't get the hype on these books. I couldn't get through Giliead. I tried several times. It's just a very slow moving and boring book. Someone told me Home was better and it was the pick for a bookclub I'm in so I read it. Took me a long time. It's just sad. It's not about redemption. No one is redeemed and no one ever changes. I don't know what you are supposed to learn from these books other than life is boring and disappointing. I'm not going to even try with the third one.
