According to my Lights Out liner notes, Weinstock turned the studio lights off to achieve a relaxed vibe for the players, remembering the effect it had for Miles Davis’s Blue Haze. The cover photo was shot during the recording of the title track. Lights were back on for all the other tracks on the album. Great vid, you guys!

Really great one guys! Outward Bound is killer! It’s awesome that these are now readily available and you don’t have to spend a lot for them

I caught this episode late, but glad I did. I’m anxious to hear “All Mornin’ Long” by The Red Garland Quintet. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these APP reissues.

Great presentation, Bums.. I'll like to fill some holes in my collection, but I'm looking at $ 65 per record here in Europe, so I'll probably not buy all that I want... Thanks for the video anyway 😁 / Claus.

I'm glad Mike included The Tenor Scene, that's actually my number 1! Keeping in mind that I only picked up 16 of these and I didn't get some because I already have other pressings, my top 5 list is: (1) Johnny Griffin & Lockjaw Davis - The Tenor Scene; (2) Kenny Burrell - Bluesy Burrell; (3) Gene Ammons - Boss Tenor; (4) Tommy Flanagan - Overseas; and (5) Miles Davis - Relaxin. Also, don't neglect Jimmy Witherspoon - Evenin' Blues. I have an original of that record, but I LOVE Jimmy Witherspoon, he's one of my favorite blues singers. He's more in the jazz, jump blues tradition and sang with Count Basie, Jay McShann, Ben Webster, etc.

@@JazzBums Sorry, I haven't compared them and have not listened to reach out them enough times to say. The Miles Davis and Coltrane titles are great though as are the Sonny Rollins. But I think I need to listen to everything more to say.

My five would be John Coltrane with The Red Garland Trio, Bluesey Burrell with Coleman Hawkins, All Mornin' Long, Boss Tenor, and Steamin.

Correction, Felipe, I meant procrastinator by Lee Morgan
@JazzBums Жыл бұрын
Those are great, indeed. I have procrastinator in a few versions, Bobby is great, but sound wise, in my system, I stand behind Bags. I think it's just a matter of preference, plus it's mono and stereo. I think in Bags they achieve almost a stereo effect in a mono cut, which to me was very impactful. Of course Bobby Hutcherson is one of, if not the greatest on vibes, and Procrastinator is a great recording. Marginal difference. if you have the chance to listen to the MMJ, it's even better than the OG. Again, musically I prefer Bobby 300% but the sound of Bags Groove to me is hard to beat. Thanks for reminding us of Procrastinator, gotta listen to it tonight!

Mike change the angle on your camera. Make it wider we can’t see the whole album you are showing.

I'm with you on Relaxin (and your other picks are great too). It seems like we're in the minority of people who prefer Relaxin over Steamin.
