Ep. 129 | Sightmark Wraith HD 2-16x28 *REVIEW*

This week on The Late Night Vision Show Hans and Jason review the Sightmark Wraith HD 2-16x28 that was a surprise announcement by Sightmark in August of 2020. The Wraith HD 2x is the "little brother" to the Wraith HD 4x, which is the best selling digital NV scope in the country. We are extremely excited about this scope because of the lower base magnification and much wider field of view than it's counterpart. For hog and predator hunters that are mostly shooting under 150 yards, we believe this is THE scope to buy. Don’t underestimate the importance of lower magnification and wider field of view when night hunting. This is such a great video and explains why that is so important. I started night hunting with the original Sightmark Wraith HD (4x). It was a new experience for me, and I was hooked immediately. I quickly learned that sometimes it was hard to find my target through the scope. My first coyote kill was just over 100 yards, I used a red headlight to spot the eyes, then jumped on the scope to shoot. For a few moments I was scanning left, right, up, down, trying to spot the coyote. It was a dark night, no light, and to concur with Jason’s point, it is like you are looking through a toilet paper tube. I purchased the new Wraith 2x as soon as I saw it available. It is so much easier to find targets and track movers, for me, it’s the perfect night vision scope.

Good info. 2x seems the way to go for me. Hard enough to see things at night without a severely limited field of view. I mostly pest control with air guns, and hope to get a coyote or with my big bore .357 bulldog.

I got this scope mostly for grandkids to hunt with. They love it, the wider field of view really helps them with finding their targets. I have not even tried it at night, but I am sure it will be as good as the 4 power. I've not let them try the 4K yet because it is mounted on a grendel and I don't have much cheap ammo for it. As far as IR light, I already have a Wicked IR which I use with the Wraiths, is the 50 mm much smaller than it? Thanks for the great shows

Could the bolt gun mount not just be removed from the picatinny rail leaving the scope on the mount, then just slid back on into the same slots making it pretty much a QD mount?

I look forward to your show every week. I just watched a review on this scope. I really appreciate when you guys talk about the ergonomics and the ease-of-use for left-handed hunters. Every review I watch, that is one of my biggest concerns. Especially when I get into thermal and try to figure things out on a pitch black night. I would really appreciate if you would consider making that a 30-45 second discussion for each review. Keep doing what you’re doing. Love your show.

I have a 4x also, just order and received my 2x. I made the decision over the weekend when I was sitting on a feeder hogs were tearing up. I found the 4x good, but it was really hard to track the moving hogs. 2x model is the way to go for line of sights 150 yrds and closer.

With the amount of sales of the 4x model it may take a little time for sales to pick up on the 2x especially with the 4K max slowly and I mean slowly being released. I have 2 of the 4x currently and really like them but really debating if I want a 2x to add to my collection, lol... as far as ease of operation of the Wraith HD, it is very simple, I have helped many with questions on the Wraith but probably the most asked question when it comes to the Wraith is converting the video file, which always sounds more complicated than it really is. I truly believe you can’t find a better Digital NV scope with Color daytime capabilities in this price range, than the Wraith.

Awesome review. Something to consider: people who are new to night hunting will have heard of crappy optics like ATN due to their popularity. I feel like you guys should give a quick statement on wether or not this is better than a comparable ATN unit(obviously the SightMark is better) but the noobs need to be told that.

Know this is a few years old now but I've just bought a 2x wraith for rattin on a game farm in the UK and it's superb the more light you give it the better it works also seems to appreciate a power pack and any 5volt works well. On the light that came with it i run mine on 18850 its a bit of a job to make them fit you need to open up battery chamber by about 1.5 mill I did it with a drill and emery cloth and lots of oil for lubrication i also added a nipple on the module from a old battery just hot glued around it the 18850s have a flat plate not a nipple simple fix but the quality of the light is improved immensely like really big difference and cheaper batteries. All in all a brilliant product for some reason the rat's won't comment

I ask Han on Instagram bout a sniper hog light the other day. I’m thinking bout the 66. Butttt if I decide to go with the cannon; I know it’ll be little overkill for me cause I take my shots 150 yards and under. But I have a couple fields I scan that’s 500 to 800 yards deep. But my main concern is. Does it blind you out in the scope the shorter shots? Like under 100 yards?? Maybe this made sense to y’all.. lol

You will just have to adjust the light to flood while using it close, and spot when looking far

Sorry we just saw this message. No sir we don’t plan to review it unless they make significant improvements to it’s night time capabilities. I actually own one and have for a very long time. It is a low light (not “no” light) video camera and it excels greatly at that but in its current state has no real value for true night hunting.

there is only one logical battery for the ir, 16650. makes a sweet light of that stock one.

I've tried a single rechargeable 16650 cell in the stock light, and it does work pretty well. I didn't check to see if the light output is reduced with the lower voltage of this single cell, but I do like the idea of not throwing away handfuls of depleted CR123 cells. There are rechargeable CR123 batteries available, but they have a higher voltage than the CR123A cells used in this light. I don't know if the higher voltage would damage this illuminator, and I can't get anyone at Sightmark to answer that question. I do know that the 16650 is safe at 3.7 volts, and it does work in this light.

@@peteduncan921 Yeah, the 16650 works but the output is severely reduced. You can see 4-500 yards with the (expensive) CR123 batteries when fully charged, but you're maxing out at about 100 yards on a 16650. It was a big disappointment for me when I tried it and found out.

@@TehButterflyEffect I just popped a 16650 in my light to take another look, and I can see well enough to shoot well past 200 yards. The picture is definitely not high quality, and a bit grainy, but it looks clear enough to identify and shoot at a feral hog at that range. I use a handheld night vision spotter to scan the fields around our place, and only turn on the Wraith system when I've moved close enough to take a shot. I shot one hog once at about 130 yards, but the vast majority of my shots are under 75 yards and close enough to illuminate using the 16650 battery. My spotter is a Bestguarder WG-50, with an additional IR illuminator attached, and works well enough to identify animals beyond 500 yards if the air is clear.

Why buy the 32 over the 16? The 32 weighs twice as much with a lower fov. I think 32x would be too blurry with a digital scope

I think there might be some confusion. The Wraith 2x weighs 33oz with batteries and 4x model weighs 36oz with batteries. Since their resolutions are identical the 2x model is exactly as clear/grainy at 16x as the 4x model is at 32x. Same at the lower magnifications....the 2x looks the same at 8x as the 4x does at 16x. I know that’s confusing to read but basically the scope’s image quality matches identically as the move up through their digital zoom.

You cannot. The only way to get audio is to record it separately like on a voice recorder etc on a phone and then sync it up while editing the video on a computer.

This optic is too heavy it will not hold zero on an ak47 side rail it will make your rail mount slide please let people know this
