Springs - As far as I can remember, the only USGI mags to have spring problems were from Cooper. Those were also the days before the green anti-tilt followers. These weak springs caused the last 4-5 rounds to come up tail low, the bolt riding over the brass, shoving the top round halfway forward, and the bolt denting the brass. This could very well have been overcome with anti-tilt followers. Cooper was the only company to lose its govt contract due to quality issues. There were other issues besides bad springs - bad seam welds, etc. In the mid to late 1980's a LOT of Cooper mags were dumped on the civilian market and for a while it seemed those were the only ones you could buy. I was able to scrounge good springs from dented/damaged mags which solved my problem at the time. That said, I have other USGI mags from the '70's-'80's, Parsons, Adventure Line, Center, D.L.Sanchez, Okay, which I still use as "range mags" to this day with their original springs. All have been updated with Magpul followers and work flawlessly.

Ladies & Gents.... ^^^ THAT is knowledge you just can't find anywhere. Soak it in! (Thanks @saxmusicmail for chiming in with this little knowledge nugget.)

@@At3tactical You're very welcome. This comes from my hair being grayer than the moly finish on those mags... hahaha. By the way, I keep those range mags loaded. They only get emptied at the range. I finally broke down and ordered some Pmags since everyone brags on them, but I'm a diehard USGI aluminum mag fanboy. Unfortunately Okay just stopped making their Surefeed mags, but C-Products Duramags are excellent. Also D&H, DSA, Palmetto, Bravo Co, all have good aluminum mags. I have those, too.

I've always been under the notion that keeping mags loaded for years without using them wore out the springs... because I don't shoot a lot. Thanks for clarifying that it isn't the case.

My friend actually jammed a gen 2 p mag into his magwell so hard it locked his rifle up completely and i had to pop both pins and disassemble the upper from the lower the only thing it could have been was no over insertion tab.

One more thing about Okay USGI aluminum mags. There is a CAGE Code (a govt vendor identification) code stamped on mags produced under govt contract. The code for Okay was 33710. You will find that same number on Colt mags. Many (but not all) Colt mags were produced by Okay, but over the years I've laughed at people paying a premium for "genuine Colt magazines", the only difference being the Pony on the floorplate. You will also find mags with the 33710 CAGE code and floorplate marked NHMTG... New Hampshire Marketing. This was another name that Okay used for a while selling to the civilian market. "Surefeed" was a brand name Okay used for a while. Same mag, same quality. Okay has been around since forever, it seems. Sad to see them stop making USGI mags now. They were always dependable. Some other brands were like this, Parsons, Adventure Line, Center, were the same manufacturing plant, just a change of ownership and the shingle out front of the factory. All good.

I have a lot of various mags and prefer the 10 round for the simple fact most qualifying round in computing are 10 round and the same mag hangs on less stuff in deer stands and all hunting scenarios and carrying a spare doesn’t weigh much and have all the ammo needed for most hunts. But a couple 30 round mags comes in handy on some hog hunts if you have good range length on in your gun.

I noticed you said 9mm adapter while showing the .22 LR adapter. I just wanted to let you know so you can dub it and correct it. Since you need a bunch of parts to convert it to a 9mm as apposed to just bolt carrier and .22 magazines to run .22LR in the AR-15 platform. Other then that good info thanks for the info! 👍👍

The only features I care about are, metal, 30 rounds and no jamming.

For me, that overtravel stop tab would give me confidence to rest the mag on the ground whilst prone. I served in South Africa, with the R4, and they told us not to rest the mag on the ground whilst prone because of jamming from a wiggly magazine. What stops the next round from going in skew? If the magazine can't wiggle, much better.

I actually have an out of spec lower receiver and all my mags fit so loose that the mag catch wouldn't hold the mag after firing a round down range, they would all fall out. Never a good thing. I stumbled onto the the answerer to the problem while mounting the bad lower onto my maintenance bench block, noticing that it didn't click into the locked position and damn the problem was solved.

The Gen3 PMag has the overtravel stops to make them STANAG compliant. Means they work in guns like the SCAR16 and other european arms.

can I take a 30 round magazine and make it accept on 15 round,, or should I just buy 15 round magazine
@At3tactical Жыл бұрын
You certainly can just load 15rds in a 30rd magazine. If you're in one of those "oppressed" States, probably just best to buy what's "legal".
