Steve Mitchell's portraiture is incredible & he truly captures the character & spirit of his sitters. He also gets them "right." They look like the subject without being photo-realistic. His details enhance his subject. So instead of being a painting of a photograph, they have personality and depth that make them recognizable as his work. Portraiture & landscape are equally important to me, but I find landscaping more relaxing & less threatening. I think there are more expectations when you begin a portrait & that becomes threatening. It has to "look" like the subject & be recognizable to your audience, it has to meet their expectations, too. The onlooker expects a certain level of precision as well as interpretation. Automatically you're constrained by that, even if you try not to be. In landscape you don't have the preconceived image to fight, the expectations of portraiture, you don't have the same freedom.

I would definitely sign up for anything Steve Mitchell does. I've started dabbling in portraits too, starting with pets, but getting into people, and it's really challenging, but really rewarding. I'll be there.
