Here we'll take you through how to complete 30 and 45 degree turns while holding altitude and rolling out on an assigned heading. This is what you will be expected to do your first few lessons in the airplane, as well as in preparation for your checkride, and during the FAA Practical Test.

BEST explanation I've seen on correction for a tight turn and losing altitude; great visuals (unfortunate that the sun was right in the shot). Seeing your hands and horizon line from the cockpit POV is perfect. thanks.

"You can't lift unless the wings are level......." Important point -- There is always that desire to pull back on the yoke.

This was an amazing video. Somehow, not sure while in flight to explain, or maybe i would have inserted a moment of ground school to show the horizontal component of lift, so for an absolute beginner is also clear what Jon means to steepen the angle of bank to descend or shallow the bank to climb, how the lift plays a roll in a turn..., but anyway, it was an excellent demonstration.

Mastering those 30 and 45 degree turns while maintaining altitude and heading precision is key to nailing those early lessons and checkrides. Your clear explanations make it easy to understand the expectations for these maneuvers. I'm curious, though - when it comes to practicing these turns, do you recommend any specific techniques for keeping a smooth roll out on the assigned heading? Looking forward to your insights!

Nice concise demonstration. I didn't do many steep turns in my training. Last time up one of them ended up as a spiral dive. Will practice them a lot more.

I am curious. about steep turns. When the international fatal accident rate shows that most were in the traffic pattern and on base to final, why aren't steep turns taught with flaps extended? That would seem practical to familiarize a student as to what they might encounter on that famous base to final overshoot. Standing by.

Hey Gerald, I was wondering if there are any ways you are sure that you are ready for a maneuver? How can you tell if your students are ready for their solos and so forth? Just curious, great video by the way.

You can't lift unless the wings are level? How is that so? I do climbing turns every time I fly. Am I missing something in that statement?

Do you suggest using trim in a 45 steep turn in a piper Cherokee

You are not supposed to be untrimmed on a hard maneuver. Yes you can trim.. Trims are part of controls..

This is a great video of the ACS standards. However, I have a question. So, as a commercial pilot, I am confused to why this is an ACS standard. So, the definition of a standard can be summed up as a "norm". My next question would then be, how many times, as professional pilots, has anyone done a steep turn with passengers on board? For me, at least, the answer is none, and if I ever did a 45 or 50 degree bank turn with passengers on board, I would likely be cleaning the airplane afterwards of vomit. I don't know about the rest of you, but the only reason we perform these maneuvers is to pass an FAA checkride. After which, we do not ever do these again, until a check flight. Maybe I am thinking/analyzing this too much, but, shouldn't we be focusing ACS standards on just that...standard norms that occur during every day flight operations? I know that I have probably started a firestorm of criticism, but I would like to hear the rationalization. Thanks so much.

I'm just about to begin my private pilot training but would like to take a guess on part 2 of your question. Perhaps in a geographical location where you have terrain on both sides of your aircraft, like in a valley, and a situation requires an immediate 180 degree turn. Or, you're on base to final and spot traffic on a straight in at like 1 o'clock close proximity. I'm guessing steep left and maybe a climb as well. IDK, like I said I'm not a pilot yet but wanted to take a gander.

There are 3 times i can quickly think you will need a well done steep turn. At least a 180 Turnback Turn needed.. See below. 1-Climbing out to clear rising terrain, but suddenly you cant climb as well due winds changed etc. You need to do a 180 and get out of there. Rusty on them?? No excuses nature will accept.. You are a pilot you said.. Prove it.. 2-On GRM.. Say some guys pay you to go see a property from the air. You have to descend to legal 600 feet agl AND slow down for them to feel less turbulence and be able to see it well. I bring construction managers to areas like that often. They are tough guys. They even like steep turns.. Many times i have to go to 45 degree banks when on tailwinds sections to stay close and they take videos.. It is called GRM.. Ground Reference Maneuvering. Many crashes from weak pilots that dont know Real GRM and do steep turns wrong, and stall/crash.. Many example abound.. 3-Climbing out an airport, at say 1,000 feet agl, suddenly a flock of geese or other big birds in front.. A quick steep turn is needed, NOW!!!.. You pull too much on it, Stall. Pull too little?? Hit the big birds.. Do it right, saved you or the airplane.. A hero instead of a Zero.. 4-On above situation you hit the birds, lost the windshield, or about to lose a wing.. Will you try to go around the airport on a TurnAround or a Turnback to opposite runway.. Afraid of 45 degree descending steep turn needed to Turnback??.. Oh you wimp.. You take the longest route instead. Try to climb with no windshield to TPA.. You stall due cant see well and drag.. We had a CFI and student killed like that in my area.. Another one at 900 feet under class B airspace hit a seagull, lost windshield too. Had to use full power to reach a place to land due drag.. That CFI quit flying after paying big money to Embry Riddle.. Big birds can kill pilots easily.. Be good on steep turns to avoid them quickly..

@@timf5534 You will learn to never go into a valley that is not at least a few miles wide. And know that wind will push you even though it might be calm at grnd level there is always wind in valleys at altitudes if 1000 ft or more above and many pilots died thinking they could turn around in a valley. Don't be that idiot, do not fly into a valley without a craft that can climb over the top. That means at least 180 hp if not 200. If theres more than a 12 kt wind blowing across the valley, its a no-go.

30 is a medium turn not a steep turn, generally. The least arbitrary definition is that shallow turns have an under banking tendency, medium turns are neutral banking, and steep turns have over banking and need counter aileron.
