The other thing is that the aquatuners can't cool the turbines, so there must have been some change since the video was made. I am currently only running two turbines and they instantly overhead into the "turbine too hot" 130+ C range. Aquatuner can't cool em down. Incoming oil into tuner is 116 or so, output is still above 100. Will let it run a few cycles and see if it's get better but right now it doesn't look good.

Your method of building the heatspike is fine by me - it reminds me of the processes used in constructing shallow underwater structures such as bridge supports, where a wall is sunk and drained. The airlocks could be considered as something like hydraulic reinforcements for the diamond walls of the shaft while they are being built.

IDEA! - Instead of expanding the heatspike to the sides, get a mining drill to mine out the solid magma on the sides so new hot lava can move to the spike instead. I spilled some and it ended up falling down their. Good thing we walled in the bottom of the area or it would have come in contact with the heat spike.
@Neyar3 жыл бұрын
One word of caution: I did a similar geo thermal desalinator on my last map, and had issues with the stream pressure being too low. Granted, I only fed in salt water and had a single pipe feed, but the issue was that with pure salt water input I was losing a tiny bit of mass to salt with each packet. But since the steam turbines always pulled 10kg of fresh water out, and I was putting in a few grams of salt shy of that as input, my system would lower the steam pressure too far, and then inject waaay too much heat in the instant the doors closed. So the system failed until I forced the steam pressure above a certain threshold by rerouting the fresh output via automation. Your system isn't running 100% (yet) so it might not have this issue, but it still could happen once you start purifying full time, if you end up with 30kg or less input for some reason.
@FrancisJohnYT3 жыл бұрын
I am keeping the pressure really really high at 900kg+ for exactly that reason. It's why we are using the atmo sensor mod. Additionally we can only take out 30kg/s but we can potentially input 40kg/s. I am feeling pretty safe, but we do have access back in if something breaks.

Only downside is that it only detects if the system is blocked you can't really prevent it.

Thanks, nice work! May i suggest : instead of the no limit sensors mod for the water pressure problem, why not pump in water only when the turbines are on ? With a little bit of math (and maybe a timer sensor), you can probably make sure that the right amount of water is added when the turbines are on
@FrancisJohnYT3 жыл бұрын
Oh that is pretty tricky, something the pumps only pull a small packet of polluted or salty water. That makes it impossible to predict input on a per second basis. We could use liquid buffer tanks or filters, but I figured this made things a lot neater and far more straight forward to explain what we are doing.
@yaemz1233 жыл бұрын
The brine, salt water, and polluted water all produce different amounts of steam when boiled, while the turbines pull an exact amount, so without massive amounts of automation wiring, you can't do an input=output setup.
@Gargamel45303 жыл бұрын
@@yaemz123 I think it's possible, still. For example, you could add the output water of the turbines to packets of exactly 10kg, then detect when they pass the pipes with a pipe sensor that activates the input water (if coming from a specific geyser) for an amount of time equals to the ratio of effective steam added vs 10kg ouput (or its nearest integer, if you know what i mean, kinda hard to explain). I know it would add a bit of automation and tweaking, which is not the point of the video. But, my point is, it is possible to do it without the mod, that are often the cause of game crashes (for my low spec at least).
@yaemz1233 жыл бұрын
@@Gargamel4530 if I understand your proposed solution, the problem still stands. If you allow a 10kg packet of input liquid to replace each 10kg packet of output water, you will lose steam pressure over time. This is because 10kg of polluted water, salt water, or brine will not produce 10kg of steam due to part of the mass turning into dirt or salt.
@Gargamel45303 жыл бұрын
@@yaemz123 Yes, i know this. I didnt want to, but my previous comment wasnt obvious enough. Lets do the math. According to the wiki, 10kg of ph2o = 9.9kg h2o (steam) + 0.1kg of dirt. Wich means that, every 100 packets or so of 10kg output water, you need to add two packets of 10kg ph2o instead of one. Or, if you dont want to count to 100, you can detect the output dirt on the rail and deduce the missing steam from the amount of dirt/sand comming out. I wont argue anymore on this problem. But thats why oni is so great, for every problem there is about a billion solutions

@mirjanbouma3 жыл бұрын

@FrancisJohnYT3 жыл бұрын
It's to do with cooling and an even gradient of temperature. All the water drops in the centre where all the heat producers are along with the temperature sensor. Set the temp to 180C and the whole boiler with end up at that temp. Now imagine you change the temp to 170C, slowly the centre will cool to 170C and then as the 180C steam is removed via steam turbines the 170C steam will slowly take it's place until everything is 170C Now imagine a aquatuner at the end of one of the tunnel area's, the boiler is set to 180C so it is surrounded in 180C steam. But the aquatuner turns on and dumps heat into the steam driving up the temperature. Maybe only 14C, maybe more, maybe less. It depends on a bunch of factors. But it is not possible to control accurately. By putting all your heat producers in one place you can direct all your cooling their to and get a nice even temp. Otherwise you need to put temp shift plates everywhere to even the temp and that is way more work. The nuclear reactor is designed on the same principle as this boiler, all the heat and cooling go to the same spot.

Francis, how are you able to cool all those turbines with super coolant? I couldn’t keep 4 turbines cool with super coolant, when I was in sandbox mode, At least in the base game.
@FrancisJohnYT3 жыл бұрын
Have not checked the math in a while but even with water you can keep 6 turbines cool. The way it works is the steam turbine top emits heat equal to 10% of the heat destroyed by the turbine. So imagine 5 turbines eating 200C steam and spitting out 95C water. Between the 5 of them they are destroying 105C of temp across 10kg of Water/Steam. 10% of that is = 10.5C of heat for 10kg. An aquatuner cools the 10kg of liquid passing through it by 14C so one aquatuner can keep up with the 5 turbines easily. However if it's not working for you check a few things, are you using water or super coolant in the aquatuner? Are you cooling down steam hotter than 200C? Remember it's 10% of the destroyed heat so if you feed them 400C steam that is a temp difference of 305C which is a lot more heat to destroy.
@commonsense-og1gz3 жыл бұрын
@@FrancisJohnYT i used super coolant for both the piped coolant, and for the layer that sat on the turbines. i went as far as using thermium turbines and pipes as well. i did max out the power output for the turbines, but i can't remember what the temperature was. i believe that the temperature may have been at 204 C. i only built it because i needed a simple power solution while experimenting with sour gas boilers.

Totally could, but that would leave a bead of water sitting right behind the vent which may eventually soak up enough of the surrounding heat to boil and burst the pipe. The way he's done it, the valve will shut off and the pipe after the valve (including the vent) will empty out.

@Andrew Renzema Once you get the method down it's just as easy as doing a large one, I put them side by side with a door in the middle at the exits to my base to seal it both from thermals and atmosphere. The trick is to mop 2 tiles away instead of right next to your blob since mopping catches the liquid on both sides of the mop command

Unfortunately your performance issues are going to keep getting worse as you open up other worlds. The beta just isn't running that well yet. I've done a half dozen spaced out playthroughs and at some point you need to open dev mode and start bricking up planets or large areas you're done with, filling them with neutronium. It doesn't interact with anything so it helps a lot with the frame rate.

Vacuum, tiles or fine spread of gasses of the same temperature are fine to non-cheat ways of optimization. You can also cut pathing options and amount of accessible stuff lying on the ground. Helps a lot because game constantly keeping in check how exactly and where dupes can possibly access anything on the map. It's may be even worth it to cut off some LARGE amounts of resources (like a pike of 8000t of igneous rock from your magma to power converter) in inclosed space with automation access to a small portion of the stuff like Francis did with infinite food storage, because then game thinks that no dupe can access any of that like 240 stacks of 25t of material DIRECTLY and cuts off unnecessary calculation.
@FrancisJohnYT3 жыл бұрын
Walling in the map will be on the cards, though I do like the neutronium idea but only if the game got bad enough. Would prefer to use the in game mechanics to help us out.
