I have cold hands and feet and my day is ruined if I don't start with warm feet. I have two one litre Nalgenes with bottle parkas for my day out, and so before bed, I have them both warm inside my bag with me. Then I have two litres of cooking water ready for the morning. I take my boot liners out and sleep with them inside my bag. Then, when it's getting time to put my boots on, I melt my two litres of water for the day and pour the boiling water into the Nalgenes. Then the Nalgenes go into my boot liners and get them super toasty right before I put my boots on. Nalgenes then into the their bottle parkas, ready to keep me hydrated for the day. I start with warm feet and my day is 100x better for it. I keep a pop tart or other breakfast snack inside my bag and I munch it down before getting up to cook breakfast. It helps me stay warm as I get out of my bag, and gives my morning a little boost. Before bed I eat nuts like cashews that are dense in calories and those are fat calories that release slowly, keeping me warmer overnight. Some people swear by vapour barrier liners and I've used one, and for multiple nights with a down bag, they work great. To avoid being clammy and damp, sleep in merino base layers and vent the bag just enough to keep your temperature in equilibrium. Your down bag will stay dry for days on end. For those wondering, Greg is using the Western Mountaineering Versalite, rated to -12C and weighs barely more than a kilo. I have one, amazing bag. The bag is underrated, I've used to to close to -20C and I'm a hella cold sleeper. That said, I live further east and our Rockies are colder, and my Western Mountaineering Puma is my go-to bag for winter, the Versalite for more spring-ish missions.

One thing i started doing during my time in the army, was taking as much off as possible/sensible, once in the sleeping bag. Mostly you can sleep in the underwear, if you've got the right sleeping bag for the temperature. But keep the clothes inside the sleeping bag. This way they are dry and warm in the morning, so you can put on dry warm clothes in the cold mornings right away and the difference isn't as bad as if you would still wear long-johns etc. in the sleeping bag. It's the best thing to start with warm clothes after sleeping in a muddy field just above freezing temperatures. Also tried it sleeping in a snow cave in the alps. It works great.

Anyone else notice that 13 seconds into the video the editor wrote that Mike Douglas and Greg Hill were “Salmon Athletes”? Gave me a good chuckle 😂

Any comments on the freezing condensation on the tent walls? Also do you pull the liners out of your boots and put them in your bag? Good basics. How about doing one on setting up the cooking tent?

Salomon makes a tent? What’s it called, is it on their website? The hot water bottle does a good job of drying wet gloves or socks, outside the back.

A tip for winter camping with your wife or girlfriend: Females tend to get colder easier than men. Make sure she has warmer clothing and sleeping bag than you would need. Instead of getting a sleeping bag rated for 5 degrees colder than the temperatures you expect, get one that's rated 10 or 20 degrees colder.

Sealing the tent with snow might be ok, when you have a tent with ventilation holes like you do. Otherwise it can become a death trap and you can suffocate. Also you should mention never to cook in a closed tent. Many expercienced alpinists died of carbon monoxide poisoning. You just go to sleep and never wake up again.
