As many angles as possible, and a good profile is essential, and a beginner could even make a cardboard template of the profile to the actual scale of the sculpture. If you can, get photos from below and above too, this will show the curvature of the brow, the shape of the triangle of the nose, the nostrils, orbit of the mouth, jawline, all those cross contours which are usually lacking in portrait photos. Strong shadows falling across the face can help. You have to mine the photo for information. It's there if you know what to look for. Remember that a sculpture can be thought of as a 3 dimensional contour drawing. Get enough contours and you have a good sculpture. This was Rodin's method. All other methods are conceptual and helpful--seeing in planes, building up from the skeletal and inner muscular structure, but ultimately it's the surface that matters. Keeping this in mind, analyze your sculpture in terms of light and shade. Take photos of it. What is it saying when you convert it to 2d?

Thank you Rick. I’m about to watch all of your videos you have so much knowledge to share and your sculptures are in a class by themselves I would recognize them anywhere. Question can I do a self portrait with a mirror since I am the most cooperative the only cooperative ??

Hi Caroline, thanks for checking out my videos! Yes you can absolutely do your self portrait using a mirror. I usually set up 2 mirrors so that I can see side views of my head, having one reflecting into another. I would also have a friend take photos of the side and back of your head, you could also do this by using a tripod. Good luck!

It's possible to print the pictures as unobscured as possible, take measurements from these and scale up. Just make sure you compare measurements flat also. If you can find a profile shot, this makes a wonderful silhouette stencil to compare against the model. I've done many portraits without the model present and this helps tremendously.
