Ep. 189 PLACING THE FINAL PIECES ON THE LANDSCAPE OF DUNWOODY!
Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio!
My name is Julie Mazzoni and I will be focusing on The Landscape of Dunwoody mosaic for the next little while. It is a 36 foot long, 161 square foot mosaic going in a niche on a busy street corner in Dunwoody, GA. I am partnering with mosaic artist Jennifer Freeman. We are using glass and porcelain tile with thinset and silicone. Our substrate is Hardie Backer With Hydro Defense Technology Fiber Cement Waterproof Backer Board. This week we are PLACING THE FINAL PIECES ON THE LANDSCAPE OF DUNWOODY!
0:52 I start in on my LAST AREA for this mosaic. It is a mix of teal colors in a transition swath under the last tree.
4:16 I cut my LAST PIECE!
4:34 We go to Jennifer's studio to see her lay her last 3 tiles.
4:55 YAY!!! We adhere our last pieces together!
5:22 I tape and store the last pieces for installation.
5:38 The next step...
6:27 While we wait, we have a plan!
7:04 I prep a new substrate.

You two must be soooo ready to see it grouted and installed. What an amazing project. I am assuming the city will have a celebration once it is installed. Can't wait to see it! Now you are freed up for other projects that won't take a year to complete. Would you ever do another giant project like this one again, or is one enough?

Us too! Grouting is underway this week already. Installation is weather dependent, so we might have to wait for a warm spell.

I am a faithful viewer of your videos and think of you as one of my mosaic mentors, so thank you! I have a design question. Why did you and Jennifer choose hardie backer board for this project? I would have thought there would be lighter substrates? Would Go board or mesh have been an option? I ask because I am contemplating a community project in my town. Thanks again.

I consulted with my own mentors and while lighter substrates would certainly have been easier, they are not rated for exterior applications by the manufacturer (at least not Wedi board.) This installation will be in full Georgia sun in the summer and there was a concern the foam could possibly break down over time. Mesh was an option, but we both agree direct method is easier rather than double direct. This particular Hardie is Hardie Backer with Hydro Defense Technology. Thank you! I use the Hardie backer board for table tops (most live outside) but wasn't sure about the longevity of the foam boards. I can't wait to see the Dunwoody project installed!
