Dang you really should use your voltmeter in amps mode to clear up your uncertainty

This was really helpful, thanks! I've been thinking of making a phone charger powered by a Stirling engine to have as a conversation piece, and I'd seen these models of desktop Stirling engine online; I had my doubts as to whether they could effectively charge a phone, especially since they never list their brake power, so it's very useful information that I'll need one of the two-cylindered models at least.

Thank you for calling Shenanigans, I pretty certain I know exactly what video you are referring too.

Turn the motors vertically and use a rocket stove for the heat source.

I think that at sunny days these stirling engines would be in very good use in combination of solar energy (fresnel lens)

That would be a great experiment! Now I gotta see if anyone’s done it 😁

What about a backup power pack?

To charge the phone? Wouldn’t that defeat the purpose 😂

I wonder how many it would take to charge your phone. Maybe 2 4 cylinders? Or 4 giving a total of 16 cylinders

Of these small kits, definitely more cylinders. I’ve seen larger ones like made from coffee cans and I think a larger one with a heavier flywheel would be the way to go but on something like that you’d be using a lot more fuel as well… 👍

The eddy currents and resultant diamagnetc nature of the copper when moving in a magnetic field is what slows these motors when moving under a load. I really want one of these sterling engines though, one with more 'pistons' maybe. Thanks for the video, I have liked and subbed. Peace from Ireland to you and yours mo chara.

How long would it take to charge the phone completely with the 2 cylinder Stirling?
@unclebennysgarage Жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! So at .5 amp, about the same as a standard USB A, (I think) a phone will charge all the way in 2.5 to 3 hours (not fast charging or USB C) so on the Stirling engine I got it would probably be about that maybe a tad longer for the fluctuating current BUT realistically the fuel in the jars only lasts like 5-10 minutes. So you'd be refilling those a lot... you could use a sterno can, that burns longer but not as hot as alcohol... Iv'e read a few camping debates about sterno vs alcohol stove but that's for cooking and not for maximum output... so short answer I'm thinking 3 to 3.5 hours if you kept it going.

assuming the phone battery is 3000mAh, the charge current is 0.05A battery charge time calculator says it will take 63.2 hours

Wow! That’s a long time to keep that flame going! I think we would definitely need a larger more powerful engine to make it feasible…
