That was one of the best videos you have done! Like Ant said, so simple when explained properly. Thanks so much. And yes, I find it super helpful to see average guys surfing broken down. Then I can compare it exactly to the things I do and know how to fix it. A series of videos on average guys (not pros) and breaking down individual manoeuvres would be so so good. Definitely a good idea.

Great Live Clayton and Ant, really enjoyed the Bobby Martinez breakdown on vertical back hand! Getting inverted during the re-entry to allow more release off the top and getting the board to fall back down with gravity underneath him. Ant's breakdown was classic though as the everyday surfer can relate to not looking up to the lip/section or use of arms, chest and hips to rotate up to the lip. Great analysis as always, few 'nuggets' in there!

Watching this and comparing my few surf videos shows me how bad I was/am. I had moments when I accidentally do the right thing but now it's nice to go out and practice these techniques and feel the difference.

Going through the first half of the video. I've been surfing over 35 years here in central and south Florida. You're right about the direction of the arm in relation to where the board will go. I skateboarded before taking up surfing. So I have understood things through cross reference. I made it a point to where whatever move I earned on my frontside, I would immediately go to work getting the backside version. So after my first frontside 360 successfully landed (after quite a long effort trying and failing) I quickly adapted a backside 360 as well. It was the backside reverse 360 first. Throwing a tail slide at the lip and then following it all the way around. Then I got the frontside reverse 360 hitting the lip and following it around. The I got the backside over the lip 360. What I realized is that the backside over the top 360 is just like a frontside handrail positioning in skateboarding. The frontside, standard, over the top 360 is like the positioning of a backside handrail approach in skateboarding. Some of these cross over concepts helped to visualize the moves better. Then muscle memory kicks in and it's natural movement. I'm 45 now and still actively surfing like that. The muscle memory for maneuvering is like riding a bike once it's been established. And backside surfing feels natural to me, even to the extent that it's completely blind during moves like the backside 360's. I could close my eye's during the maneuvers, and it wouldn't change anything. It's all muscle guided memory.

Wow, Clayton you are a saint. The amount of times Clayton is explaining something and Ant just ignores him completely and cuts him off mid-explanation to read some irrelevant Facebook message... I’m pulling my hair out 😱

Hello Gene, Thank you for your comment. Ant brings a level of professionalism to a surf coach who would otherwise be stuck on the beach. There is a lot happening behind the scenes. Eventually we will have more people involve but now it is how it works.

What is discussed here is fantastic. However, would it be possible to show some video footage from the surfer’s eye, when they are doing things right and when they are doing things wrong. I think it would help us to know when we are doing things right or wrong. What we feel we are doing and what we are actually doing are often very different.

So many surfers lead side-on with their ass and elbow, as if picking up their surfing technique from skateboarding or snowboarding, when historically, the other boardsports originally came from surfing, but lost the proper surf stance technique.

We agree on that. Good surfers make it look easy because their technique is on point. That is the ,message we are passing on to our surfing community. You will find a lot of the intermediate surf analysis in the accelerated surf program.

Wait, get low but just stand up? I which one is it? I watched an episode where you talked all about standing tall so your mechanics work, please can you exolain the difference here?
@ombesurf2 ай бұрын
Tall is light and low is heavy. Tall creates space to move ie twist and lean. The idea is to follow the energy in a wave and complement it
