When I'm taking off on the shoulder of the wave I usually paddle at a slant towards the lip and cut back the other way as I pop up

Very true about when you want to learn different turns or tricks and just play it safe because you don't want to waste the wave. I try to first see what kind of maneuvers the waves are good for and have 1 or 2 in mind and just go out and try them on every wave

Could you pls share what size was the board you are talking about it the start ? I am also about 96 kg but I did never have a board that would be less then 20 1/2 in width.

As a beginner surfer I went to a remote island to teach myself to surf better. On top of that I was doing a daily yoga and meditation practice. 3 months later I entered a competition. Granted I didn’t win anything. But going from not being able to pop up to being able to compete is my personal testimony that integrating OMBE’s pearls of wisdom that I learned from watching KZbin and meditation is a way to access heart mind coherence applied to surfing.

I'm confused as what ice baths n ropes have to do with surfing. Can you explain
@SiargaoSlider

I know for a fact that Ice baths help with muscle recovery, then the ropes, i think help with warming up the same muscle we use when we paddle.

Lots of stressed people in the comments 🤣 and lots of experts with varying opinions, this technique is brilliant and that's how it should be done and most pros do it, not all I understand. It is a very efficient way to catch waves with little effort, whilst positioning is important, the technique is forgiving. Some people talking about mushy waves, same thing, it works just fine. Waves push you more efficiently from the back of the board and not under the board, gravity does the rest, is not just gravity like some experts in the comments are saying.

Could it be that a snowboarder gets that feeling of “surfing rail” and what it should feel like, a bit quicker?

totally yes. you've always got to try to get the board horizontal by shifting weight from front to back. but beginner surfers are taught all sorts of things by others, so this vid doesn't get its rightful share of views.

Last week I dropped a comment regarding my vastly improved experience in the wavepool implementing these tips. A few days ago I went for a surf in the ocean. Beautiful 3-4' swell, offshore wind, autumn reef break in Torquay. I did my best to use these tips again and a rough estimate would be that I doubled my wave count with less effort and stress. I really felt so much more connected to the ocean. Thank you Clayton and Anthony!

I'm in my 30th, in a quest to learn surfing. There's no ocean nearby so, I'm learning surfskate to hopefully easily surf when I'll be able to, and your videos are absolutely awesome. I feel like I understand the mindset, so thank you! Cheers from France.

For me i find backhand almost easier as a goofy foot 95% of waves at my local are right handers. Lefts are rare so my experience going left is much less.

While I think the Carver boards are really good fun, I think that super squirrely front truck simply does not approximate how a surfboard turns. A surfboard pivots off the mid rail and tail, not the near nose. That fall at 4:37 is that dumb front truck going squirrely.

I see some local surf schools pushing absolute beginners e.g. can't pop up, trim, turn, brake or wipe out safely to take huge set waves that close out very fast e.g. you gotta grab rail to make them. They have extremely dangerous wipe outs. I'm a low-mid intermediate surfer but I'm only just working my way up to them now but I ensured I have the tools already I can grab rail, trim, turn, brake and wipe out safely.

I'd have to agree, I love to watch Torren surfing, so fluid and smooth. Interesting to see the analysis breakdown of something that he probably does quite unconcsiously.

My wife (short boarder) is a big back foot advocate where I (mid length long boarder style) firmly believe my front foot is my turbo button. My wife struggled with wide clean fast rail turns where for me i found it natural and i think the whole back foot belief system is what causes people to struggle.

I think you surfed better on the swallow tail, discounting the first bottom turn, it went smooth. For the round tail I think would have been better if you did the turn lower on the wall. The squash I feel like you got more stuck on the maneuver, not much line/rail after the bottoo turn.

We use a self coaching technique in windsurfing, called the fast fwd formula. If something goes wrong, (or right), think about these things (usually in this order): Vision Trim Power Balance Stance A little different for suring but this is what I use for self coaching
