Okay, sleuthing about on Google Maps, and the ominous looking building is in Crystal City, MO and is currently privately owned. But I believe it once belonged to a group called "Ursuline Sisters of the Roman Union" (so it was a convent of sorts. From the pics I saw, it really is a magnificent building and grounds. The White Castle is called Selma Hall also known as Selma Farm and Kennett Castle. Built in 1854 by folks involved in local Lead mines (for the making of bullets, etc). Going downriver on google maps, the land sure is empty of the villages and towns you (me, too!) are more used to seeing on the Upper Mississippi. Lots of Levees, swamps and wing dams!

If you look at the maps of the Lower Mississippi, once past Cairo and the mouth of the Ohio, until you get into Louisiana, the river doesn't have too much on it other than Memphis and a few other towns and cities. Much of that has to do with what the great earthquake centered at New Madrid, did to the course of the river and big floods like the one in 1937 that flooded towns out so badly that they moved inland from the river.

There has been in the past a large Bald Eagle gathering on the Mississippi River around Keokuk Iowa usually in January. If the river is frozen over upstream from the Keokuk dam the water below the dam is usually not frozen. They gather and go fishing and teach their young to fish.

Eagles only go as far south as they need to to still have open water to fish. They can do this right near every lock and dam. They also do lots of scavenging. Nothing makes an eagle happier than floating shad or a deer carcass. So as long as they can fish and scrounge, they really don't go anywhere.

It is off the market now but was and has been listed and sold as a household these days. Trying to find some history on the place has proved difficult but there is a reference from the Marquette University archival collections and institutional repository records that it was once the Ursulines,Roman Union, Central Province,Archives. Like I said,finding info on it seems very sparce. Maybe with a ton of research I may be able to find more but with it involving the Catholic church I'm not surprised at all that initial findings are slim pickings. In 2019 the property was purchased by RL CASEY HOLDINGS LLC and they are still the owners. It was nice to see that the new owners had invited the sisters back to the the residence in 2021 and 2022 to see the changes and renovations. @backwatersandbackroads
@backwatersandbackroads 9 ай бұрын
I have a 12 foot fishing boat that would have been great on this trip. The problem becomes getting it all to where you start the trip. An inflatable can be stowed away when not in use or transported. Overall, I'm not an inflatable fan. I'm holding out for a Portland Pudgy. Look them up. More than a dinghy;) a survival boat!

@@backwatersandbackroads Oh yeah, transporting an aluminum boat. I didn't consider that. The Portland Pudgy looks perfect. Kinda expensive new though. As I recall, Huck Finn and Jim towed a canoe behind their raft.
