What amazes me is that tiny ride height adjustable clip carry's all that weight and pressure. I'm blown away by just that. And yo moved it very easy with those small pliers.

On these rusty gen1 i always use heat first on the bolts before trying to remove. A small benzine blow torch or whatever from homedepot. Going to install some billsteins this weekend. Thanks for your awesome videos and website

If you load the torque wrench to its highest setting, and then drop it 6 feet onto solid concrete, it recalibrates it.

Job well done, lol "prayer and petition" for that bottom bolt was hilarious. I've actually got this to do on my '05 toyota tundra - 3 mechanics have refused to do the work based on the level feature of the 5100 for safety (they don't think it's gonna hold all the weight up front, coilover seat would buckle). I am going to have to do some of my own prayer and petition when the time comes to replace front struts, Bilstein approves the use of them of the vehicle. Will be reviewing your video again for some advice. Thanks for the upload!

We've moved thousands of sets of 5100s and don't think we've seen a spring seat failure.

Shouldn't use the torque wrench to break loose bolts. It will throw off the calibration.

I highly recommend buying new KYB top hats which comes with built in bushing for those who plan to install Bilstein 5100s.

If u get both front tires off ground swaybar link wont fight ur removal and u can avoid dealing with them.

Thanks for putting this video together. You pointed out something that may just be the issue I'm having. I installed these 5100's on my tundra but have had a very light drivers side clunk ever since. I remember the kit only coming with one strut bushing as you mentioned, and think I only installed one. If so, it's very likely that is where the sound is coming from. Looks like I'll need to tear everything apart again and double check.

Probably the issue. Either reuse the bushing on or pickup a set at autozone.

Yes. I did same I believe. Not able to go back and repeat job as am in crap health now, but SUPER important to know/share. Still can't believe Bilstein doesn't provide the new bushing and supply better install instructions. 🙄

One bushing is on top of the spring cap and the other underneath it.

Glad you like the channel. One thing I would have done differently is NOT gone with Bilstein 5100s in the rear. They’re great in the front. Too short in the rear.

It's called a spring seat not a "housing". Also as long as you are doing this you may as well replace the springs. The springs are cheap and they fatigue quickly. I have had great results using the Moog brand springs.

did use your stock spring. do u reccomend keeping stock springs and just swapping the front struts with 5100s. i have a 2001 4wd tundra 143k. i want to level it and the springs seem in good condition.

I dont take the sway bar link off actually I use the sway bar as a pry point to get the bottom strut bolt back in. You really dont need to index the strut closely . It will spin a bit when its installed to get the bottom mount in .

I advise against spinning the strut with the spring under tension assembled. It can cause the retaining clip on the spring perch to spread and drop a notch and ruin the clip. Ask me how I know.

Thanks for the video. I am getting ready to do this on my 2013 Toyota Tundra is a 2WD my front is about 3 inch's lower than the rear. It came this way from the factory. What should I set the shocks too. To match the rear?

I've heard a lot about these shocks. Is it simply the shocks that allow for up to a 2 1/2" lift? No spacer or block?

Yes, reuse your factory springs and the spring seat sits on a clip. There are 5 notches that the clip can sit in. As the clip moves up, the spring is raised and the truck is lifted. From 0-2.6".

@@swordfish1120 Yheah. Each notch corresponds to a different ride height. So 1 notch = stock height, 2nd = 0.8", 3rd notch = 1.5", 4th = 2", and 5th = 2.5". Or something like that. It's listed in the instructions.

As the spring seat goes higher, there is more preload on the spring and the stiffer the ride becomes, but yes, you can use the factory spring.

I would really appreciate it if you'd take your time and answer my concerns, thank you. I have a 2006 tundra 2WD. All I want to do is level the truck. I'm planing on keeping the rear shocks stock since they're good. With this being said, which Bilstein series should I buy just to level my truck? If I get the 5100 series, what level do I set it on? Can I use the same springs and/or is it recommended to change them as well? Thank you!

I don't have the bushings. You can buy they cheap at your local auto parts store. Or do what I did and reuse the old bushing with no problems.

How much lift did you get out of it after it settled? I have a 2001 tundra 4x4 and am debating on the 3rd or 4th circlip location because I have about a 1.75" to 2 inch rake. Also how is the ride qualtiy set at that height?

This truck has spent most of its life in Arizona or Texas. But did spend 4 winters in Minnesota. There is rust, but not a game changer and the frame is still solid.

Still need to know what the two extra washers are for ? Does the instructions have a type o ? The do not fit anywhere on the strut bolt. The holes are too small.

A Jim I got a question for you. I installed the 5100 to my 2014 TOyota Tundra 4x4 Crewmax. I noticed your instructions show different than mine. I noticed in yours shows not to use clip 5. Mine didn’t. Long story short. My truck about 3 inches higher in the front compare to the rear. But my tires after the install look like the need an alignment, they pointing in. Any ideas?

Yes. 2nd and 3rd gen Tundras have different instructions. You definitely need an alignment after lifting. Let me know if you need anything else for your truck. Thanks!

Hi Josh, Love your channel man!! I'm building my 2002 limited Sequoia. Do you know about the Locking center diff MOD that will allow me to lock my center diff on 4H not just on 4L.. It did change in 2003 and up.. but I was told that there is a MOD out there??

Been watching your videos for a while and been looking on your website. In your opinion, are lower control arms necessary for a 2.5 inch lift? I see the OME kit can come with or without it. Mainly looking to fit 255/80/r17s and level the Sequoia. Its a 03 2wd. Freedom off-road UCAs look like poor quality, and I don't really want to dump close to $3000 in a vehicle that's worth a little more than that with just adding lift and tires... Also, do you have an opinion on the Rancho Quick lift struts?

Don't exactly recall. Wouldn't be surprised if it did. But guys set it to the top perch all the time. May consider either high angle CV boots or a diff drop.

@1stgenoffroad I have a '07 Sequoia 4WD. If I use the 5th notch and add a drop diff, would that be okay? Or the 3rd notch is what you'll still recommend even with a drop diff?

That would be okay. But the higher you go, the more pre load there will be and the stiffer your ride will be. Another option is to put a different set of springs on the bottom notch. What's your opinion on spacers on these? I got some 3" from Supreme Suspension for my 2005 model.

I would guess you would get about 3" of lift, if you put it 3" spacers....... All jokes aside, while you are getting the spacers installed, you might as well install new shocks while you are in there, the proper way is to install a spacer lift is to also use shocks that are the same spec lift height of the spacers you are installing. Technically, you can use stock sized shocks (they tend to be cheaper than lift shocks) but thats not recommended for vehicles that will ever go off roading. ***If you use stock sized shocks with any suspension lift, the shock will be what bottoms out first when the wheel goes all the way up into the wheel wells, the suspension should bottom out at the bump stop, which can handle the weight of the vehicle, even at strong impact. Almost all shocks are not designed to bottom out and hold the weight of the vehicle, if the vehicle comes down hard, the impact will most likely blow the shock completely out if the shock collapses as far as it can, because the rest of the suspension still has room to travel. It will also damage the shock if the wheel travels all the way down under high force/impact. the control arms, sway bar, sway bar links, along with the shock all work together to hold the wheel assembly in place when the body lifts up. By having a shock that isn't sized to the lift, the shock maxxes its length out and is basically trying to pull the shock apart way before the other components start to restrict how far down the wheel assembly goes away from the vehicle. If the vehicle will only be driven on roads, and is basically for looks, then a spacer lift with stock sized shocks will work fine, but its not recommended .

Make sure u tighten the spring extra inche if you are doing a lift. Really hard tighten spring when it is by itself.

Curious as to why you revised the video? I installed just as you did a few months ago but bought new KYB strut mounts and installed them accordingly. I did not reuse any old bushings, but used the ones that came from Bilstein.

Bilstein should have provided two bushings, one for above and one for below the strut mount. That's how the OEM shocks and springs are installed. But they only provided one bushing and instruct you to only use one. You need two. Otherwise you get a clunking sound with every little bump. .

Thanks for answering. I guess I got lucky...No clunk on mine and I drive over speed bumps everyday. Could be the new strut mounts I installed that helped.

Hey nice vidz very helpful! I have 04 sequoia just wondering if you decided later on to adjust the 5100 circlip like its on 2nd clip and want to go up 3rd clip do u still need to remove everything? Or u can just compress the spring then adjust the clip without removing the whole thing?

Your 1st Gen Sequoia is looking awesome! Quick question, what is the best replacement for front/ rear struts? Mine is the same model as yours but bone stock, it has 140K miles on it but the ride is on the stiff side now? When should i replace my shocks? I want the ride to the on the softer side, do i need to replace my bushings w/ polyurethane? Appreciate your suggestions. Keep it up! 🙌🏻👍🏻🙏

If you're going to keep it stock and are just looking for a better ride, I wold consider the Bilstein 4600 series front and rear shocks here: www.1stgenoffroad.com/store/p220/Bilstein4600ShocksSequoia.html#/ They'll easily swap out with your existing shocks. I wouldn't go poly bushing if you're looking for a softer ride. The poly bushings are more responsive but also stiffer. Thanks!

Stay away from 4wheelparts too .they know what they are selling to customers, you ask and they don't know shit.i spent close to 500 on bilstein shocks. Even though I asked them many questions, those shocks are rough

Yeah don't use a harbor freight spring compressor. I did on a Sequoia and the pressure of the spring twisted that tool up like a pretzel. The spring was literally tearing the tool apart. Had to run to the parts store to get a different one just to get the harbor freight one off and to finish the job. Very dangerous situation.

I also used the Hazard Fraught spring compressor. I had to be super careful the rods didn't twist/rotate around the spring as I tightened the bolts. Definitely was a little dicey, just go slow and careful and do a few turns on each side. I'm usually a "safety 2nd/3rd" kind of guy, but I was careful with this one and all that stored energy.

Hello there! @1stgenoffroad (or anyone who can answer my questions) I have 2 questions. I 'm looking into buying the dobinsons 1.75" lift kit from your site. Does the Dobinsons kit also level the truck? Also, with a 1.75" kit, does it require a diff drop? I've read in some forums that if the lift is under 2", a diff drop isn't necessary. Thanks ahead for your answers. I love the channel!

It will have the same 1" rake that is has now. Diff drop is not necessary for this lift.

wd40 is penetrant but the oil you using doesnt penatrates properly and wd40 is not expensive
