Dan Fogelman (This Is Us, Tangled, Cars, Fred Claus, Crazy, Stupid, Love) is a legend around here. He brought us the Pearsons, and he brought us together! Dan joins us to discuss what went into writing the show, and how he was able to surprise us with bombshell reveals and leave us hanging week after week. Mandy, Sterling, Chris, and Dan talk about the evolution of the Pearson’s stories through time, the process of filming when working with kids who grow up fast, and the importance of weaving in the historical moments that were happening in real time as filming took place.

This show specifically is why I miss DVDs of all shows being easily available. The featurette and behind the scenes and videos were always worth it. Always.

I swear, I treated as part of my healing as well, and with this podcast, I take the time to reflect back on the show and think of moments that resonated the most with me. I love how they honoured the story of every single character on the show and not just the Pearson family .

I didn't join until episode 4 and then I had to catch up. I was mad because Justin Hartley had left my show, The Young and the Restless. So glad I got over it! I can use two hands to count the number of episodes I did not cry on. A+. I have decided to watch again. Got my tissues! I will be interesting to pick up clues from earlier episodes that I didn't know were clues at the time!!

The acting on this show was great, but the WRITING is what kept drawing me in. It was SO well done, from start to finish. I have never watched a show where the end tied up everything, so completely and wonderfully. I miss this so much, wish it could have gone on forever.

I remember feeling really gypped on season 6, knowing it was set to be the final, covid delays, less episodes and additional scenes to include world events. But the most difficult part was wanting more storylines about the children. It felt at the time it was a shooting issue. I realize the show was based on three children but I felt we deserved more content with Randel’s girls and the new big three. Especially because loosing a grandmother, the matriarch is life changing. I had hoped to hear what Dan would have included

I'm not lying when I say I've seen the entire show more than 10 times. and every time I revisit it I learn and see new things. For my husband and I it was our weekly couples therapy for years. Although I had to confess to him in the last episode that I had been cheating on him when he believed that on Wednesdays that we would watch it together it was my first time watching the episode, so I had to confess my betrayal of watching the new episode alone on Tuesdays because I preferred to meditate alone and 24 Hours later I saw it with him and it was incredible that I cried more the second time than the first. We are from Mexico by the way.

It is so interesting to hear another writer's writing process. Especially one so similar to mine. In my personal opinion, The Train episode was the most well written piece of television. It should have received an Emmy as well as Mandy. It was absolutely perfect.

Whether it’s the way I look at life, or the way I respond to situations, or just understanding the purest form of love and care or the idea of an imperfectly perfect family, the list could just go on and on! Thank you for talking about the decision making around incorporating the pandemic into the show. I've been super curious about how different shows made the decision to either acknowledge it or not in future episodes. I like what you said. Your show was so uniquely set up to address both the pandemic and MLB without sacrificing the current story lines.

I always loved the show and I was always moved and touched by it, but the season that addressed Covid, especially the episode that paid homage to the creator of image transmission technology, touched me SO much that I felt like HEARD. I didn't feel alone in my suffering because I was isolated, worried about the situation. I'm Brazilian and, like the USA, we were greatly affected and were experiencing a difficult political situation. So these eps were very meaningful to me. As always, you didn't overlook the important issues and that was very important to me. Seeing Dan talking about it reminded me of this and I wanted to share, so thank you so much ❤

This Is Us, my favorite show of all time that will always be my favorite show of all time, was the first time I took a second to think about screenwriting as an art form rather than just digesting the media in front of me and deciding if I liked it or not. For some reason it never clicked to me how massively important screen +script writing was until this and I am so thankful to Dan Fogleman for that, among many other things this show has given me ♥️

I don't thing the success of the show had anything to do with the political situation at the time. It's just that the writing was amazing and refreshing. In the midst of all these sci-fi, anti hero etc shows we had a show that was about family and interpersonal relationships and was just so relatable. The characters were flawed without being anti heroes. And the idea of going backwards and then forward made it so interesting. And yes it made me laugh (i loved Randall's family and their good vibes the most) as much as it made me cry.

501 is one of my all time favorite episodes. I had “friends” and family delete me off of social media for praising it!!! It was so empowering to know I was in the right “side” and no longer cared who liked me or who agreed with me. I choose my own family now and I’m so happy. How people could dislike that episode is beyond me and says alot about their character or lack of character I should say.
