Loved the discussion on "quality time" with the kids. My walk with daughter every night is one of my favorite things to do and she talks so much more about her day! Its precious moments.

Ryan is correct, 10 hours alone is a blessing to some. Reframe it. I have a young family. I'm never alone, unless I engage in hobbies.

Just wanted to share a serendipitous moment: I decided to go to the book store in my area after my last lecture and ended up buying Ryan Holiday's "Stillness is the Key" after finding value in the few chapters I was able to read before the store closed down for the evening. I had no previous knowledge of this author and what books he had already published in the past. After I got home, I searched his name on KZbin hoping to find more biographical info and was pleasantly surprised to see that The Minimalists, whose work I'm familiar with via Netflix, were interviewing Ryan Holiday on their podcast today on October 8, 2019! Thanks so much for all the work that you all do!

This podcast hit home for me! One of my new favs! I do enjoy my drive to work and while it's only 50mins (it used to be 20mins 2 years ago), I've learned to enjoy the time to myself (I am a mom of three, 2 being twins!) and listen to my favorite music (and not baby shark lol) or podcasts! But I do find that slowing down is important. My mom is very go, go, go and while I do see the value in working hard and staying busy, I also find the value of working hard to have "free" time, if that makes sense. I used to take work home but now I work hard during work, to spend more time with my family or spouse vs. just spending that "free" time time working.

One of the most enriching stretches of my life was when I worked a manual labor job that took zero brain power, which gave me the opportunity to listen to books and podcasts. Exercise AND intellectual stimulation.

Another great discussion. I've said this before, I keep learning throughout my life. You HAVE to stretch yourself or life becomes terribly mundane. At age 47 I decided to learn some polymer chemistry. Now I work in regulatory affairs. At age 50, I wanted to see if I could bench 100#. Turns out I can do 105#. At age 44 unwanted to see if I could learn music theory. I composed some simple songs a year later. At age 40 I wanted to see if I could run under a 10 min mile, I had a 5k in under 30 minutes. When I was 32 I wanted to learn to ski. By age 38 I was taking on the Continental Divide at 13,000 feet! I think next I'll see if I can go back into public speaking, starting with the Toastmasters. The most frightening thing to me was public speaking, so as my minor in college, to get over that fear, I chose Comm Studies. Stretch yourself, you won't regret it.

Omg 😱 wow congratulations 🎉 🥳 You are my inspiration! Honestly these have always been my questions for many many years. Getting older I thought doing any kind of strenuous sports or learning new things were totally always off limits!! I was always either toooo afraid to try because maybe that little scratch I ever got scarred me for life. Or in learning, I was afraid of learning anything new due to my dyslexia believing it’s impossible! For years that’s been my belief!! Lastly it’s either others that are creating fear mongering that ‘trying anything new or too strenuous will cause life long damage injuries’ (and honestly yes I’m super afraid! I worry if I try anything new what if I break my spine my back etc etc) 🥺😓🙈🙈 and of course I chose to believe this. But the feeling of regret weighs heavier than ANYTHING I have to say! So hence you have really inspired me. Thanks soo much for sharing this and giving others like me hope. P.S and yes of course will stretch don’t worry 😅 and yes the fear is still there 🥺🤞🤞

I love the idea of "garbage time" with your kids. Alot of Parenting is just showing up. Not having "highs" all the time or trying to be "parent of the year" every day. Takes the pressure off a bit so we can relax and just LOVE our kids. Daily stoic. Com Can't wait to check it out!

Having off this Columbus day, no traffic to Lincoln tunnel, went food shopping. The weather in Weehawken is beautiful. Put nice WQXR classical music. Do some laundry, relax. Later I will cook chicken noodle soup. Slow

Winston Churchill - have 1-3 hobbies :his were painting, brick laying, and? Forced him out of his comfort zone but refreshed his soul. Stillness is the way. The obstacle is the way. Ryan Halliday. Acquiring balance.

What struck me is "resting" during bricklaying, instead of resting in front of the TV. I'm going to seriously try painting as a hobby (btw Ryan's shirt looks dirty, probably the camera?) great video!

I don't intentionally "do" anything with regards to new skills. I usually just see something fun or interesting, and do it. No contemplation required.

Ok so how do you stay "still" and rest when you have a 5 month baby on your hands? I just don't have time to sit down in silence and paint, or "discover" myself. I'm lucky if I have time to eat....
