Simon is very talented with a good sense of humour and a deep knowledge of physics. Gemma is so bright, hardworking funny and supportive of Simon. If anyone feels the country has difficulties I would just suggest they watch this channel which will not only give them deep sense of optimism but a seriously good giggle too. Consider this. Plumb the generator cooling system into the nearby Caterpillar, using it's cooling system and block as a "heat sink". A second-floor radiator could be in the circuit as well. A thermostat could open or close the Cat circuit so it operates only when required.

Always great videos! If you take 6" or 8" pvc pipe, cut it to fit between the ribs (figure in the length with the caps), glue a cap on one end then fill the pipe with slag. When it's full add oil. The oil even used engine oil (free) will stop the corrosion and add weight. Then glue another cap on the open end and it's sealed, It won't rust and you can move them around with a rachet strap very easily, and it's cheap and permanent. Keep up the good work!

Connect the outgoing cooling line from the generator to the heating boiler, and then the return line from your radiators to the motorcycle cooler. This way, you will make use of the heat from the generator throughout the entire boat.

adding a radiator to the genni is a good idea, you will find if you want the rads to warm up quickly is to fit a electrical or a bronze lift pump fitted to the engine, I used the same idea on my fishing boats of the past to dry wet gear off in the cabin, just make sure you use lift pumps that can take the heat, cheap plastic inline pumps just downt cut it.
@stevenjohns13223 күн бұрын
I do remember very well you building that generator, I think you got the engine from an old garden rotavator or something, the amount of work you put into that generator was amazing especially the water cooling system, fabricating and welding the pipe work was just genius , I your channel and always look forward to Friday for another episode to drop 👍😊
@gordonjones32703 күн бұрын
If you’re in salt water, I recommend a heat exchanger to keep salt water out of the Kubota. You can remote a radiator but the water pump on the engine might not be able to handle the distance (someone mentioned this) so a centrifugal pump for the radiator would be a great help. Definitely add a high water temp shutdown, the kubota’s are sensitive to scoring pistons because of high temps. I think Deep Sea has a nice module that has HWT and LOP shutdowns.

It never stops amazing me how positive you both are. Keep up up. As always. Well done. Happy days😊
@Mark-jp9dz3 күн бұрын
Having had two generators - one raw salt water cooled, and one fresh water through a heat exchanger. I can strongly recommend you use the fresh water/heat exchanger route. As for solar panels. The ones that produce the most power are not ones you can walk on. the walkable ones have a problem, when you fix them to the deck, that means that there is no means of cooling under the panel. That has a big impact on performance,

Heads up. I've tried exhaust flex pipe and the heat wrap and it didn't work out. It eventually leaked from the micro-flexing, from the vibration, at all of the seams. I eventually ended up using a rosebud torch to bend non-gavanized tubing packed with sand. The packed sand holds the tube's shape during the bending process. Or you can buy pre-bent exhaust system tube sections and weld them together.
@peterofficer64603 күн бұрын
I have used that exhaust bandage in the exact same situation but after about four years the stainless exhaust pipe completely disintegrated under the wrap. I think it sweated and the constant heating and cooling was too much for the quality of the tube. Just something to be aware of.

Having a bypass system where you can let the water/antifreeze heat be were you need it, keep it in engine room or bypass and let it go up stairs or bypass and go outside. Junkyards would be a good place to find small truck/car radiators to disperse the heat outside during summer. Done right it could heat both but the motor needs some of that heat to operate correctly.

You can use a therm o-siphon system and a header tank up topside, the hot water will rise and go through your rad and fan system, nice and cosy in the wheelhouse!
@alexbrauninger36873 күн бұрын
Shame the generator broke down. So you know how many hours you have put on the EcoFlow unit? Good to see the diesel make it to the boat after watching Simon build it all those videos ago. What you could do for the winter is plumb your radiator circuit through the engine (bit like fitting a heater matrix or calorifier) so there would be no need to run the boiler whilst the generator is running. Might still need the cooling radiator but it would help use the heat as well as stop it getting too hot

For a heating radiator using the coolant from your generator, that is exactly how an automotive heater/devroster works. You could probably get the controls and valves from an old truck or van and simply treat your hvac radiator as an automotive heater core.

I'd use a heat exchanger in a remote located to heat the boat cabin, the more coolant volume you have the easier it will be to keep engine cool, use a thermostatic valve that opens at certain temp, that then circulates coolant once temp is reached, and to the heat exchanger, you could make hot water also for a shower also ...
