In central Kerala there was many Sikhs . They where malayalees converted from Hinduism. They changed their name to Punjabi or added Singh to their original name. As far as I know, they converted at the time of Vaikkom Satyagraha, it was held in British India. It was organized for the right of so called lower caste people to travel through the road near the temple. At that time Sikh Karsevaks (I think they are called so) reached Vaikom to help/support the movement by making food for the people participating in the movement. People here was so impressed by this great service, they became very attracted towards Sikhism. Caste discrimination too added to this attraction. Conversion started.At that time Gandiji intervened and asked the Sikh volunteers to return , as the purpose of struggle was a matter between Hindu castes and non Hindus should not be involved in any form. Ones they left no one was there to guide them or teach Sikhism. Slowly the new religion(Sikhism) in central kerala disappeared . Still there are old people with "SINGH" with their name. If the trend of conversion continued Kerala would have been the state with second or third highest population of Sikh community.... Vaikom is in Kottayam district.

Only very few people are still alive who have Sikh names, I will try to get their details. I collected the information about it some 10 years ago, when I had by chance heard about Sikh names in Vaikkom, I wanted to know how so many people have names with Singh in it. Todays generation in Vaikkom don't know about this history. only when I asked them they thought about it.I got some information from my f i law and some others.....

I honestly have no idea of what your saying or it might probably be facts of a century ago , Am a born and brought up Sikh from Kochi , Kerala and So is my family . We are settled in Kochi for the last 60 years in Kochi .

@@sukhpreetsingh3599 Now even people of Vaikom whose parents or grandparents had names with Singh , don't know how that name came....Only a couple of years back I came to know about it. It was by chance I heard about a Sikh name (Some ones grand parent or so, I don"t remember whose) of person from Vaikom.....
