Ep.26 Kathryn… CDH1 Genetic Mutation. Gastrectomy

Today we got to talk to the beautiful Kathryn, @itsmekathrynleigh, who talked through her journey of gastrectomy. Her relationship with God is so strong and has allowed her to see this as a humbling experience. She now sees the importance of the little things in life and is living each day to its fullest. it really intrigues me....what triggers these signet cells to change into a cancer? In my case it started in my left breast, and as I am undergoing chemo they can't do a gastroscopy right now, they will in June. Although my pet scan did not show anything in my stomach, I am scared they might find something there...my genetic counselor told me "we will learn from you". My family hasn't been tested yet cause it all started with me, and they will do it shortly. However no cases of gastric cancer in my family....if there was only a safe and certain way they could monitor your stomach before the onset of cancer..hopefully there will be answers on the near future.

That is the magic question Bob. Hopefully someday they will be able to discover the cause. The NIH claims to be able to screen safely. I do not think that pet scan works for these cancer cells. How scary to have someone tell you that they will learn from you. Doesn’t really give you warm fuzzies. We will keep you in our thoughts as June approaches. Is your dr familiar with the CDH1 mutation and how to take biopsies?
