Me too - I actually gasped! Since this was for your own personal use and pleasure, my opinion doesn't make a bit of difference, but I would probably have tried to repair the veneer with patching and touch-up. Anything, though, would have been an improvement over blue paint slathered on everything; baffles me how people think that is a good look. Love how the different tones of the wood worked together as a harmony, pleased you didn't try to make it look all one shade.

I love how you used the walnut shells, that's a great tip! I worked in furniture restoration for a high end company for a number of years and I'll provide one tip for a piece like this that sounds harder, but can achieve much better results and allows for easier veneer repair - disassemble the cabinet. Why do all these restorers use circular sanders instead of those that go back and forth? I forget what they are cslled.
@noexpensespentstudios3 жыл бұрын
@@phillipstephens4522 Because they're easier to use, easier to control, and more effective. The old vibrating brick type sanders are nowhere near as effective as an orbital sander. The belt sander types with an endless roll of sandpaper are too aggressive for this sort of work, fine for shaping wood, but much too aggressive for removing finish. The orbital sanders refinishers use give you so much control you can use them on even quite thin veneers if you're careful, and on very heavy finishes without fear of damaging what's underneath.

My goodness there was blue paint in every nook and cranny of that piece! Beautiful job bringing that very cool piece of furniture back to life! I like some character flaws on vintage pieces and think you made the right choice leaving as is on this one. I hope you enjoy that buffet for many years to come😊
@MadCityModern3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley. Thank you. I was nervous people would think I was cutting corners by leaving the damage. To me, it is sometimes more interesting and makes me stare at a furniture piece longer, appreciating all the things it has been through. I appreciate all your comments. Barry

This is amazing! As someone who loves antiques and gets really emotional over pieces because it’s just of a different time. Restoring something brings me such joy. I love when people restore homes because when they gut a beautiful home and put all modern finishings I want to cry. It’s just nice to see others try so hard to protect history.

Wow, such a stunning job! As being raised up to respect old furniture it breaks my heart seeing antique furniture being painted white or some random color theme popular to 'what's in' today's style. I am so glad there is someone like you that brings back pieces like this back to life.

Who knew this gorgeous piece was hiding under all that blue paint. Your sand blasting was really interesting. I have never seen that before. What style of paint removal do you prefer? Chemicals, scraping, sanding or sand blasting?
@MadCityModern3 жыл бұрын
The sand blasting worked well, but it wouldn't be good over veneer that is intended to be preserved. My favorite method is scraping. It is easier than it looks. Thank you for the great feedback. Barry

I can't believe you took something so old and beat up and made it BEAUTIFUL again. I didn't even know that was possible under all that paint! It warms my heart to see something old get brought back to life instead of spending money on something new and mass produced. I wish all old furniture got this type of special treatment!

Congratulations Barry! You did an amazing job with this dresser. For me, restoring pieces of furniture is kind of therapy too, as I suffer from anxiety and depression and all this pandemic made me got worse. Your voice is so soothing that you make me wanna stand up and get to work. Thank you for your very instructive and lovely videos. A fan from Almeria, Spain.

What an amazing restoration. I can never understand how someone could look at that beautiful wood and think-I know I’ll paint it ugly blue. And how anyone could paint over that beautiful hardware! Excellent job! 👍🏻 (oh, and it’s “es-cut-shun”) 😊.

Thank you for the pronunciation. I was hoping others would help me with this pronunciation
@tonitoland8462 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I added the pronunciation, too. It’s weird when you’ve only ever read a word, but if you’ve never *heard* it, how would you know how to say it? And yeah, blue paint? On the hardware???

This is one of the most satisfying restorations I have ever watched. I really loved how you kept in a lot of the imperfections which just added to the overall beauty of the piece. I love watching you work, because we can tell you really care about the furniture pieces you are restoring, and coming along with your progress as you learn is also a lot of fun. I also work in health care and your deep caring and kindness really shows in your videos.

Barry, your presentations are beautiful in so many ways. It’s cool the respect you show for the history of the piece and how you maintain some of the “uglies”. I think of them as badges of honor… I certainly do on me! Your voice is soothing and it relaxes me to the point that I become one with my easy chair. No easy task as my S.O. says that I only have an on switch. 😉 Your style is impeccable and I look forward to many more vlogs. Thanks for sharing your talents!

I'm so excited that piece found you. I'm sure, I'm not the only one who raised their eyebrows when you uncovered the stripped design on the door. That was an awesome moment on this particular video. I have used the Restor a finish on my 16 year old Bassett furniture in the dark walnut. It is magical....then when you use the feed n wax it becomes exquisite. My furniture is in good condition but the upscale this has given my pieces without stripping them has saved me countless hours and made me appreciate the product more. I was happy to see how the Howard's dark wax worked on your piece. The music with the snow and your voice was very soothing. Keep up the videos with the special thank yours and cards of support in the background. It sets you apart.

1. My daughter just introduced me to your channel by sending me this video. 2. Beauty is definitely subjective because (no offense to the previous owner), "gorgeous" is not a word I would use to describe that piece when it was hot mess Smurf blue. But you know, to each his own. 3. I appreciate how meticulous you are. 4. I appreciate how CLEAN you are. 5. The buffet looked so beautiful (like actually beautiful) afterwards and fit very nicely in the room. The stain choice, the hardware, the conditioning wax...I love it all. 6. That Edison bulb lamp in front of the snow outside was magical. 7. SUBSCRIBED!!!

It looks wonderful! What a great job. It really is a beautiful piece - that lovely pattern in the front panel - how could anybody spray blue paint all over it? In this disposable age, it’s great to see elegant old furniture restored to its former glory.

I felt I could see your artistic passion, talent, and skills not only in the restoration, but all throughout the video. You mentioned people leave nasty comments. Don’t let that discourage you. You are a blessing to all who watch your work. Remember, if you didn’t have people hating you, then something is truly wrong. People hate because the devil lives in them.
