Fr. Meeks, for the past year I’ve listened to your homilies and found them to be very inspiring. I’m really glad that you’ve started these podcasts. You’re teaching us things about our Catholic faith that many don’t know but we need to know. Often, non-Catholics will take advantage of our lack of understanding of our faith to confuse us with their doctrine. You’re teaching us the scriptures needed to support our faith. May God continue to bless your ministry.

Dear Fr. Ed, This was by far the most logical, comprehensive, yet concise treatment of the "problem" with sola scriptura that I have ever come across! You have addressed this issue in such simple, straightforward language that provides great clarity so that your message can be so easily understood by all, regardless of the level of one's prior knowledge of the topic. I clearly see now that your podcasts are a great gift to both Catholics and Protestants, and to priests, deacons, teachers, and lay ministers! Thank you for undertaking this greatly needed endeavor!! I look forward to viewing and sharing the podcasts yet to come, and I encourage your listeners/subscribers to share them widely with their friends, neighbors, associates, and social media contacts. These are too good not be shared!!

He that is weary of sin, come: Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit! Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry. Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples! These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father! There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you! They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God... Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask: "Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen." Revelation 22:8-9 KJV 8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. 9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. Acts 2:38 KJV 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Luke 11:13 KJV 13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? John 14:21-24 KJV 21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.* 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? 23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.* 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.* 3 John 1:11 KJV 11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.* 1 John 3:6-10 KJV 6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.* 7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.* 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.* 10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.

@sharonthompson8061 Then begin by studying specific scriptures that directly relates to our Catholic practices. For example, look up the scripture referring to when the Lord gave the keys to St Peter. Even Google can point you to the scripture. Wow thank you Father Meeks for explaining that so clearly. You're accurate on every point that you lay down it's so easy for someone to understand that complete error of Sola scriptura. The false doctrine of Sola scriptura is so easy to recognize since as you said the Bible wasn't written for General use for over 1400 years so the only teaching that was done in mass was to word-of-mouth Sacred Tradition. The only progeny of Sola scriptura is mass confusion and Schism cuz that's all it has led to 40,000 different teachings which is what Christ NEVER intended as he says and John chapter 17 " I desire that you be One (Church) like my father and I are one"! I think the reason people like Sola Scriptura is because they can interpret Scripture the way they want to. "Each man Pope, Bible in hand" or something to that effect, per Voltaire, who wanted to destroy the Church.

Not all in the Catholic church believe the same, they may adhere to what they church says but still not agree with it. CCC 1201, the Catechism explains that because of the unfathomably rich mystery of Jesus Christ, it cannot be expressed through a single liturgical tradition. It means that the Roman Catholic Church recognizes its authority and position and acknowledges and supports the existence of different denominations based on liturgical differences. That was probably the best explanation against Sola Scriptural I have heard, but I am still unchanged, one of the main reasons for different interpretations is "inferred interpretation" also practiced by the RCC which is why Protestant and Catholics differ. As far as Scripture Alone, teachings found in the OT are the basis of the NT, the NT does not really teach anything earth shattering new but clarifies the old. Grace was always there, but got lost in mans traditions. If a Gentile was to believe in G-d he was not bound by the Law of the Covenant, fell under the 7 laws of Noah. Which is why Gentiles in the NT need not follow the Jewish Laws. Hence circumcision, foods etc. With respect. Mr.Meeks ( I can't say Fr with your name)

Since this comment is some 9 months after the original posting, I suspect it falls in the category of a day late/dollar short. Nonetheless, I wanted to record my appreciation for your take on this (watched it twice). Having been born into the Catholic faith & having received 12 years of parochial education, when that actually meant something, I have never been a big Bible person. Beyond certain verses from the epistles & gospels & storylines/milestones, the Bible has never been what I would call a primary source for me. Between the arcane language & disjointed prose, more often than not, it seemed that the theological points sola scriptura types were trying to make got lost in all the specific chapter/verse numbers. Furthermore, (& I plead guilty to this being a learned prejudice) I have never really understood what theology Protestants were advocating based on sola scriptura alone other than being anti-catholic and Jesus Saves. Given the current state of the Church today & its lack of adherence to its own doctrine, I am fully aware that my comments are akin to throwing stones while living in a glass house. But as you pointed out, using the Bible alone, or more specifically one’s interpretation of the bible alone, has led to a headache producing number of sects. Moreover, to make sure I wasn’t missing out, over the course of the past 2 years I have attended an informal study group put on by a Southern Baptist church group. These are good, sincere people who have a deep & strong personal faith built on their connection with the Bible. While I admire that, I am just not sure that is enough, particularly in the face of the coming apocalypse. One of the things I noticed during these sessions was the seeming disconnect between the miracles being performed not just by Jesus, but by the disciples too, and the purpose of Christianity. Are we doing this to be better humans being or to know God/Christ? In all fairness, Protestantism has given rise to some very based individuals whose faith in & knowledge of God contributed greatly to that connection between the Creator & His creation. But, to me, this was the distinction between the Catholic Church I grew up in & the mismash of what we call Christianity today. For me, the Catholic Church created via the dogma a framework thru which man could know God. Case in point, the opening questions/answers (who/why/what) in the Baltimore Catheism have, for me, been far more impactful than any scripture verse. In addition, considering the void in leadership, I think the Church’s sole/greatest strength is its centuries old dogma, which is providing an attraction/lifeline to so many.

14:31 Jesus literally lived by Holy books. His life fulfilled Scripture, in so many ways, and His line of reasoning was always, "As it is written"--just as Paul the Apostle's teachings were "as it is written". If only Catholics would follow those two brightly shining luminous figures in Christian history, but Catholics have their own ideas (late, debunked, ideas--eg, the myth of Mary's Assumption, etc). God is merciful to us.

I have met two very knowledgeable protestants and I noticed they had one thing in common. They were very versed in the old testament but do not appear to follow or know very much about about the new Testament.

With regard to all religions: “Do not call any man on earth ‘father’ ; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’ ; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.’” - (The Prophet and Messiah Jesus of Nazareth at Matthew 23: 9-10) -

Yea Christ stated that to His Apostles who were in a superior position compared to non-Apostles or Gentiles. Therefore, with that aristocracy that Christ formed among the Apostles, they are established as a spiritual hierarchy of men and DO NOT need to call another man Father, teacher, or Rabbi because they themselves are Christ's established authority figures in themselves. They are under direct tutelage of God who is there Father. But St. Paul told the Gentiles that he was their Father and that they need to heed his words which are inspired by God. That's why Christians call priests Father. Paul was an Apostle and teacher to the Gentiles and modern day Apostles are Bishops and Priest; therfore they are titled "Father".

There is the inferred translation, he referenced himself as an earthly father to them, But he did tell them to call him father as a religious title.@@worthwhilediscussion

Jesus nowhere gave the papists authority to add additional doctrines to the Bible.

The magisterium does not exclude liberal theology. The Roman Catholic Church believes in theistic evolution and other heresies.

The core beliefs of Anglicanism are based on Scripture, Reason and Tradition, not sola scriptura. So therefore, as an Anglican Priest the only thing I find offensive and indeed inaccurate about this video is Fr Meeks constantly talking about 'non Catholics'. Who exactly is he referring to? I am certainly not a 'non catholic'. I'm a Catholic who happens to be Anglican and not Roman.

But you are not. If you were you would accept all the teachings and not the ones you chose to. Which includes not attending a revolutionary sect. If you want to be a catholic be a catholic. Don't fool yourself otherwise

Keep watching Father Meeks and I guarantee you will be a real Catholic soon.

The Episcopalian faith split from the Anglican faith bc the King was the head of the church. Henry III was not given the church by declaration of Jesus Christ.

No, again, you are wrong. Because you don't believe and practice the tenets of the Catholic Church as the old saying goes, "Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi, Lex Vivendi." as a "non Catholic" whether you are a leader of a congregation or not you have no Holy Orders which also means you can not consecrate bread and wine which then becomes The Body Blood Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, and you have Authority to forgive sin's. You Jason are no different than any of the 50000+ protestant denominations contradicting the bible (not referring to the heretical kjv) and because there is only one Bible with 73 books no other is valid.
@jasonkernohan8914 Жыл бұрын
@peterxuereb9884 what a totally ignorant reply! No priest Roman or Anglican has authority to forgive sins as you put it. God alone forgives sins. A priest is only given authority to 'pronounce' forgiveness - that is forgiveness which comes from God alone. I think you need to go back and delve into your own catechism.

So he is no attacking the Bible at the 11:25 minute mark. The Bible was always the Bible, even before all the books were canonized and recognized universally by all the churches. God's word was inspired prior to the canonization of the books.

The traditions that Paul refers to cannot be the same traditions of the papacy because the Roman Catholic Church has added multitudes of doctrines since the time of the apostles. “Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions WHICH YE HAVE BEEN TAUGHT, whether by word, or our epistle.” (2 Thessalonians 2:15, KJV 1900) Anyone who comes after the apostolic period and claims to believe in traditions CANNOT believe the traditions to which Paul refers because all of those other traditions are SUBSEQUENT to the time of the apostles, who witnessed the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Christ, are NOT the same traditions Paul talked about.

The Roman Catholic Church does not accept the Bible as the final authority. The final authority for papists is tradition, not the Bible.

No, the hair is not standing up on the back of my neck. I'm not fooled by appeals to be open to heresy. Prove from the Bible that there is apostolic succession. You cannot do it.

There is no such thing as capital "T" tradition. All of it is man's opinion and man made traditions. There is no such thing as Tradition in the Bible. The traditions that are mentioned in 2 Thessalonians are all revealed in the Bible itself, not through centuries later papist additions to the Bible.
