Never thought I’d hear an Audio Unleashed podcast where Waylon, Willie and Yoakam were mentioned. Grew up listening to Waylon from my dad’s vinyls which I still have. Been listening to Yoakam since his debut album. Spot on with the comment on bro country. It’s throwaway music. There have been some good country artists to emerge in the last decade but the major labels ignore them. Two that come to mind are Sturgill Simpson and Charley Crockett. I think Simpson has moved on to other genres but his Cutting Grass Vol 1&2 albums were great doing a lot of his songs with a very good bluegrass band. His first two albums, Hightop Mountain and Metamodern Soonds in Country Music seemed inspired by Waylon’s edgier outlaw country. Crockett has been a machine putting out multiple albums since the late 2010s. He’s an interesting guy. Came up playing on street corners and subways in New York. The story is he’s a descendant of Davy. He signed to Sony years ago but they wanted to make him something he’s not. So he started working with smaller labels and independently produced. Take a listen to his ‘The Man from Waco’ album.
