HA! As it turns out, knowing a thing or three about audio doesn't mean you have any clue how to market or promote a podcast. 🤣

Regarding Dr. Olive's question, it seems like Dr. Toole partially answered it. The next logical home audio configuration would probably be a wireless 9.1.6 soundbar system with the addition of satellite far right front and far left fronts. It would address the narrow soundstage inherent to the soundbar while keeping the HDMI/amplication /driver mounting points; eliminate the need for side-firing and Atmos drivers on the sound bar; and allow the allocation of DSP chips to those satellites instead. And in one fell swoop, it would silence those clamoring for a Sony Bravia Quad-type setup with a dedicated center channel. I heard Samsung and Harman might have those kind of resources to make it happen, maybe all they need is an insider to point to a market niche that can be filled for relatively low R&D. ;)

Dennis suggesting that Marantz and Pioneer do retro style amps with todays insides is exactly what people want. Those vintage receivers, especially if restored, go for mega bucks. That said they have to be “real retro”. No cheesy touch screen replacement for the silver knobs. I think Yamaha and Luxman do a good job with that.

That podcast is so incredibly well done. Even if we pay no attention to the tonality of the voices or the inflection or the speech patterns (a very NPR-like presentation), the writing of the "script" is top notch. I would have believed it to be human produced and presented. Maybe I'm gullible. We should find this either very worrying and fear a future in which humanity becomes a useless organic component of a bleak and sterile world or we should be hopeful of what positive developments AI might bring to our existence and to our understanding of the universe we inhabit. I am not sure what I am feeling right now. Maybe AI can help me figure it out...

The first time I saw KZbin’s AI generated content warning label was on a K-pop music video (“Suncream” by Suvi). I thought nothing of it beyond questioning their enthusiasm for computer generated underwater scenes. It was much later when I discovered that the singer/dancer was AI generated, and the music video was filled with flexes designed to show that the uncanny valley has been solved through Moore’s Law.

I can see this tool being used and abused to flood the market with all kind of things, which will just drive disengagement in the long run. Take care, Brian

Dennis here! Your last point was exactly my last point in the full episode. I worry there’s going to be more A.I. than non-A.I. podcasts within a year’s time.

Wow that podcast sounds so real. Bit bland but very believable. Insert some more humour and that's it...
@Patagoona2 ай бұрын
That's the problem, it SOUNDS believable, and will fool a lot of people into thinking they're being reliably informed. But all it is is an imitation of intelligence, not true artificial intelligence - as usual with these 'A.I.' large language models, it gets things wrong, misrepresents the science, and omits salient information (e.g. here that the vast majority prefer the Harman target). But then, so do many highly popular actual human podcasters/KZbinrs (on which this LLM was likely trained)...in particular when it comes to this paper by Dr Sean Olive I might add.
@AudioUnleashed2 ай бұрын
@@Patagoona, good points, although as we discuss in depth in episode 37, we both kinda think it does a better job than most audio press of summarizing the information. But yes, the biggest concern is how many people are going to be fooled by… well, perhaps not NotebookLM, but definitely other iterations of Gemini 1.5!

Re: Spotify. I use Spotify after having previously used Apple Music and Amazon Music. I primarily listen to albums, and I'm completely befuddled by the author Kyle Chayka's purported difficulties with the app. "When I tried to pull up Bill Evans Trio albums, for example, I could find only playlists." Hmm, type "Bill Evans Trio" in the search bar, then click "Albums" immediately below the search bar. Boom. "I saved Charli XCX’s 'BRAT' to my library to listen to in full, but then I couldn’t track it down again." Hmm, I just did that, and it shows right up in my library, the top entry below my pinned stuff. The library can be sorted alphabetically, or it can filter to only show playlists. Which is a good thing, more power to the user. Perhaps the author accidentally clicked the playlists filter? "When I wanted to view my library as a whole, I couldn’t manage to make it escape the sidebar." Kind of true, but you can drag the sidebar width to take up 80% of the window. What's the problem here? Chayka wants to get to the think-piece part where he can bemoan how Spotify is trying to further commodify music and alienate artists from their labor. But all that chin stroking falls apart if the album tracks are not, in fact, difficult to find. I'm not a fan of Spotify and would not use it if my kids didn't prefer it. They pay out the least to artists. I'm a fan of Atmos content so I'm disappointed that Spotify doesn't support it. I can't believe it's as buggy as it is, considering how long it's been around (though it beats Amazon's, which suffered occasional cutouts). It's supposed to have the best recommendation algorithm of the major players, but I found more interesting and quirky music through Amazon. Still, this article is straight slander.
