I am asked very often which strings I recommend. Indeed I have quite clear ideas about this detail.
A very long lasting and in my opinion nice string has always been from Thomastik DOMINANT.

Most people think that if one string is from an other brand it shows that the instrument has a sound problem. But this is not correct. I love a different E string in any case.

I find the Obligatos better for my viola - more powerful and focused. I'm currently using a set of Dominants, they sound good but they have less projection than the Obligatos.

I've just changed my dominant set for an obligato set and the sound projects much better, it's a huge difference between them

I used to keep dominants on my viola. But I wasn't playing often anymore and my budget got tight. I switched to helicore strings and while they took a week to warm up I was impressed with them. It helped to force me to push more sound out of mine to keep good tone which as a timid player helped.

Excellant! Thank you for your guidance. If I get an opportunity I would like to try Infeld red. I heard some over the internet and was impressed. I will keep your Dominant Olive Kaplan in mind. I think though theEvas have been extremely forgiving and tuneful! When I thought they were dead I was able to play Lay all your love on me by abba and was agased! What strings were these that I could over tune several sonts and rub them out and then down tune to a410 and still have them play a sweet har.onic melody after such abuse? Im sold on Eva Pirazzi period. Ive played raw gut, wound gut, steel core and after 52 years dormant off and on playing Eva Pirazzi have me in love!❤ I also willbe trying red lable Jargar if I can find them for the high E. Miss Benedetti made quite an impression on me I have her deepest admiratuon for recomending Eva Pirazzis! There comfy on the fingers! Thank you Mr.Russ!

I really like C spirocore and A Larsen on my viola so your suggested combo interests me! Only one question: how does the G spirocore and D Larsen relate? Are they so different or you could tell that they are equilibrated?

Is there a practical way to use violin strings on a 15" viola to use it as a 5/4 sized violin?

Dear Zaker 72 I was sold a viola G string for my violin. The sound just didn't fit!. Remember your scale length and stick to it, at least that's what I've found. Viola strings for viola. Violin strings for violin. Specify size of instrument. Otherwise you may have too much wire on your pegs and this can lead to more sustain on one string and out of balance on another. Yah you could use a viola G like I did but I was never really happy. My ears told me, It just dont add up? My advice? Get on board with Eva Pirazzi for viola, if such a set exists. Otherwise I would recomend Infeld Red for viola. If they exist. Otherwise I would put on a set of Dominants as per Mr. RUSS. I APPOLOGIZE IF IVE PUT WORDS IN HIS MOUTH. I THINK AUSTRIAN STRINGS WOULD BE WELL MADE. MY HEARTFELT LEANINGS ARE ALLWAYS FOR GUT STRINGS BUT THEY ARE SO FIDGETY AND GO OUT OF TUNE SO EASILY I AM WELL NEIGH CONVERTED TO EVA PIRAZZI GREEN WITH THE THE PLAIN HIGH E STRING. NICOLA SEEMS TO LIKE THE WITCH OUT TO JARGAR RED HIGH E AND I CANT SAY WHY BUT I KNOW SHES SMARTER THAN ME SO I TRUST HER JUDGEMENT. I TOO WILL BE FISHING FOR A JARGER HIGH E JUST TO SEE WHAT TAMBOR CHANGES TO. MY VIOLIN INSTRUCTOR ALLWAYS SAID GET AN 07 OR FINER HIGH E, BUT THE EVAS. LITTLE DICKENS HAVE ME BY THE THROUGHT. IMEAN IM LOYAL TO THE WHOLE MATCHED SET. THESE ARE MEDIUMS I HAVE ON AND THERE CLOSE TO 3 MONTHS OLD. LETS JUST SAY IM IMPRESSED! I DONT PLAY THEM EVERY DAY JUST QUITE OFTEN. MY ONLY CRITISCISM IS THE WINDS ON THE A STRING TEND TO PULL APART NEAR THE NUT. THATS WHY I TUNE LOW. I TAKE IT UP TO A 440 BURNISH THEN DROP DOWN TO A 410 SO AS TO NOT STRETCH THE WINDINGS TOO MUCH. A LITTLE BIRDIE TAUGHT ME THAT. AND IT WORKS FOR ME. BUT WHAT DO I KNOW IM JUST A RETREAD. CHEERIO! HOPE THIS HELPS OR AT LEAST WAS ENTERTAINING. OVER AND OUT.

For a violin that is a bit deep sounded and it doesn't project the high notes well Evah Pirazzi gold is the best strings by far.You will not believe the difference.

But they wear out so fast. I only got about 6 weeks of clear sound from my golds. The greens were less warm and sweet but lasted much longer.

It all depends on your instrument, your bow, and the sound you want to produce. After a fair bit of experimentation I 've settled on Tonicas. I have a powerful, neutral fiddle and they sound good and play well. I've spend 3x as much on string sets that were no better on my particular violin. My luthier agrees - no need for me to spend more. Your mileage will almost certainly vary!

Evah Pirazzi Gold E string works unbelievably well with Warchal Russian Style A, but for the lower G and D, I'm figuring out, perhaps Spirocores like cellos and violas
