Where are you gonna get the power from for a DC motor, the sun isn't reliable enough in the Northern henisphere , Sailing Uma has to fire up a petrol generator to get around, the last thing you need onboard. Stick with a diesel.

It really does not sound like you have been out in the scary stuff yet. Big sea, blowing on shore, I would not want to be worrying about how much battery I had left. I don’t know how to say that without sounding negative or patronising because you are great, but be wise :-)

I like the idea of electric, I worry only about running time in storm conditions, I suppose a good jenny will sort that problem out.

It’s your boat guys, build it, sail it, enjoy it just as you want, that’s all that matters

What’s a lovely episode? Well you know that I love it when you share all aspects of your life and this one was just brilliant love the idea of going electric hope that works out well for you. Anybody has the cheek to moan because there isn’t much sailing going on or is rude just delete and block as we all love your Chanel ❤ PS as a non sailer if there is poor sun 🌞 how do you keep the battery’s up to ensure safety 😊

Glad you guys are sticking with the channel, I know it’s a “sailing channel” but you both are highly entertaining and have a really good vibe/flow to the episodes. And this middle aged stuck in the mud greatly appreciates your levity and humor 😎

When templating, look at using a joggle stick, or thin wood strips and a glue gun, to form the template.

A high quality diesel is still the best answer. Electric drive will improve but it's still a new technology with its own set of problems. Diesel parts are far more available in remote places than motor controllers, etc.

You could have gone the same way as Finding Freedom Far cheaper. Jf you not seen it no motor at all.. Also you had visa problems yet Sailing Hjem got an visa extention for France just to transit slowley. Looking forward to seeing you sailing.

From your location, I think you might be talking to Josh - he's great and you will end up with a really good setup - well worth doing - good luck as always, I will be following along with interest

on the topic of going electric. my impression of you guys so far is that you have already examined the pros and cons of the choice you are making, so if you know what can go wrong, i have no doubt you will have at least have thought about what to do prior to it going wrong, as E said, its a sailboat, the engine is the backup. that said, probably take the boat somewhere sunnier than the UK ASAP to make sure your batteries have some solar to eat lol.

Electric motors are definitely the way forward. As well as us there are two other boats here fitting them at the moment. Doing things differently to how they have "always" been (always meaning 60 years or so in this case) scares many people. Typically there is imbalance in the arguments with the disadvantages of the new getting far more attention than the disadvantages of the old. For diesel it's worth paying attention to the issues with failing due to fuel contamination/diesel bug/sludge at the most critical times when rough seas stir up the fuel in the tanks. Also range is often mentioned but only as the electric motors are limited at high speed. But when crossing oceans the electric motors come with essentially unlimited range at those slow speeds not limited by how much fuel you started with.

It's your choice don't listen to the petrol heads out there who can't see another way. It's not my way but it's yours so stick with it and drop everything the way you want.

I think it's great you chose to go electric. It will change the way you sail, especially on long voyages. You'll be motoring a lot less in the calm patches. But, if you've watched Sailing Uma, you'll know that it is very doable. I just bought a boat and wouldn't hesitate to change over to electric if the existing engine was in bad shape. Mine, however, is in excellent shape so it wouldn't be cost effective to switch out. Good luck with everything.

As long as you're using iron-phosphate based batteries then you'll be fine. They won't explode or start fires when exposed to salt water like the others would. And I agree, electric is the way going forward. Good luck.

Hey. A big part of boating is changing the scene outside your window. Paris is a cool change of scene. Plan A is sail, plan B is motor.

They could look at what Windello use on their cats as guidance. In France 5 a day is 1 of your food groups. Best for a monohull is to have a modest sized power pack and run an efficient generator . The size of your boat will determine your motor size but you do need the right prop to get anything like the performance an E motor can deliver.. You could use pod motors but for internal power you can use either Golden motors 15 or 20 kw motors or more.. In British waters you will need to use a motor in many cases to get in or out of harbour. As you will struggle with solar and regen under sail at times a generator running at its Stoichiometric optimum Will worknfor you and keep you safe in the dark and at high lattitudes.
Exciting news about going electric! I'll be following with interest! The electric boat race is on now between you and Uma to be back in the water first...

Have you seen the recent videos from Spoondrifter regarding the troubles they are having with their electric motor in their yacht.
@guyonaboat4 күн бұрын
you need to remember that they were never 'dead in the water' like you are with a diesel. There was a lot of clickbait with their vids - they always had one motor running fine
