I have eliminated my sugar 90%. And I have lowered my carbs to only eating 10% of carbohydrates. I eat a lot of fruits a lot of vegetables, and I limit my meat intake as well. I eat a lot of eggs cheese I take good care of myself I'm not very mobile so I don't exercise a lot but it can be done with diet and you don't have to do it with drugs. If the risk-lowering benefits of colchicine as quoted by Dr. Cywes (from the study) are 31% and 23%, we would want to know whether those are "relative" risk values or "absolute" risk values. Many of us are familiar with the way statins were promoted because they lowered your risk of an event by 36%. But that was a calculated "relative" risk number. The actual "absolute" risk reduction was about 1% or 2%, as Dr. David Diamond has eloquently illustrated in his KZbin videos.

@@Xzyu2 Not sure what you mean by having an effect. Statins will certainly lower a person's total cholesterol and LDL-C values quite rapidly. If you are referring to side effects, such as muscle pain and weakness, that too can occur quite quickly with some people. If you are referring to memory loss, that could take years to show up (although sometimes it's sooner). If you are referring to increased arterial calcification from a statin, that effect would take more time. If you are referring to a person hitting himself or herself on the head and exclaiming, "You dummy, what were you thinking?" after going on a statin, that effect could take years for some people.

@@robertcywes2966 So you are saying the 31% and 23% reductions are "absolute" risk. I suppose I could verify that for myself by closely reading the study but in all honesty, I can't be bothered. Me too. I am now 60 with a history of chronic severe gout and high uric acid first diagnosed at age 24. I was taking allopurinol at the maximum daily dose (800 mg/day) and gout had become refractory (no longer responding to treatment). At age 55 started a low carb diet for reasons I thought had no relationship to gout (pre-diabetes). 30 year history of chronic severe gout immediately went into remission when I started the low carb diet. Over the course of several months I weaned myself off allopurinol with no gout flares. I am now 5 years gout free and 4 years OMAD. I started a very low carb ketovore diet about 2 years ago. I had a CAC scan 6 months ago with a plaque score of 181. PCP freaked out and wanted to put me on high dose statin in response to 181 CAC score. Odd thing is, the PCP only prescribed the CAC test at my insistence. He claimed it was of no value and insurance would not pay for it. Prior to the CAC test results, he was 100% comfortable with my lipid blood work, which showed 121 LDL, 90 HDL, and 37 Triglycerides. NMR lipoprofile is very good with a LP-IR Insulin Resistance score

@@petertownsend252 It is recognized that endurance athletes (like you) sometimes build calcified arterial plaque. Probably a response to prolonged physical stress. A statin won't help you. Easing up on your exertion might be something to consider (in my opinion). Also, Dr. Al Sears talks a lot about the harm of prolonged cardio exertion in his excellent 2010 book entitled, "P.A.C.E. The 12-minute Fitness Revolution." He explains why short bursts of exercise are superior and safer for you. When I was your age my CAC score was 479. I remember when I went for the test I was told that a runner had just got his CAC score done the day before and it was very high. I remember thinking, wow if an athlete has a high score, I wonder what mine will be? Now 76 years old. I had a cardiologist that was adamant that I should go on Statins. He prescribed a high-dose statin. I had some troubling symptoms (leg pain, "brain fog", etc.) but he was unchanging. I went to another cardiologist who stated that a low dose statin might give less side-effect issues but provide some anti-inflammation benefits. I tried that one. The leg pain was resolved, but the brain fog - while reduced - remained (if I wanted to call the car dealer to set up a service appointment, I had to open the website, write the number down on a piece of paper, and then enter the number on my phone -- I couldn't remember a phone number for 20 seconds.) I discussed this with the second cardiologist and he agreed to take me off the statin, prescribed "ezitimibe" (spelling???), and agreed a series of monitoring visits. Within 6-8 weeks, all the statin side effects were gone. My triglycerides are approx. 70, and HDL and LDL numbers are OK -- not great, but OK. You can find a doc who is reasonable about statins, if one isn't willing to work with you, walk out.

I was on colchicine temporarily after a surprise (thought I was having aheart attack), which was later called 'angina'. It was instantly debilitating andmy wife took me to the ER in a panic because all I could do was clutch at my chest. It was discontinued later, after a short course of the drug. Now, with a high cardiac calcium score, I'm wondering...

Right. Flushing is REAL! About three weeks ago I started with 100mg and built up to 500mg. I still flush, but only for an hour and it’s not too bad. I’m wondering if anyone can confirm it contributes to lowering cholesterol because I’m not sure I want to lower it much. My cardiologist said it does but he also thinks ldl cholesterol are the bad guys, so I’m wondering if anyone has the data to back that up.

The article in JACC Review “Low dose of colchicine for ..” concluded positive effect of colchicine with statins included in the treatment. The LoDoCo2 (Low Dose Colchicine Trial 2) study evaluated low-dose colchicine (0.5 mg po qd) for secondary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD). It demonstrated a 31% reduction in ASCVD events among 5,522 patients with stable coronary disease and duration of trial was about +2 years . Which study and trial are you basing your recommendation to replace statins with colchicine? Is it based just on your experience or observations without control group comparison?

I am confused....if the calcification is the bodies fix for damages from smoking and a high carbohydrate diet. Why take a drug to keep the body from making the layers of cells that is considered as plaque. As if it was a bad thing. My way of thinking is to change your diet to a high fat meat based diet. Stay on it and have the doctor keep an eye on your CAC.( Apo a) I read is the marker for inflammation and damages.

@@donnabosserman6090 Cywes emphasized that nutrition is the first line of action. Colchicine is reducing inflammation, preventing overactivation of the immune system, such stabilizing existing plaques. Just to prevent a catastrophic failure/rupture.
