Very well explained Dustin. I own an '07 Ford F-350 semi-bullet proofed by adding the two extra head bolts, new radiator/all hoses, etc. and it ran like a dream with so much more power than before. Two years later I hauled my 43' Jayco RV from Blaine, WA. down to Tampa, FL. and back to WA. One thing I noticed is when I started the engine in cold weather, set the heater on and let it run to warm the cab before driving off...After 20 minutes of this I found the cab still cold and I was losing antifreeze. Then I would drive off and the cab warmed up. I took it back to the people in Bellingham, WA. who performed the work on the engine and after taking a few items off the engine, told me the head gaskets were the issue. After they got the head off they called to tell me all the gaskets were fried. I mean I paid them $12,000. for all that work in 2019 and now I have to pay them as much or not more know just two years later. What caused the engine gaskets to fail, I asked them....They told me the fan motor solenoid failed along the way in my travels. I asked them IF they replaced that part the first time they worked on the engine. Their answer was that they did not. Just a little part like a fan motor/solenoid took out my whole engine. I decided to have them install Engine Oil, Water, and Exhaust Temperature Gauges so I didn't have to rely on idiot gauges. Thanks for reading my 2cents on the topic of Bullet Proofing a 6.0L INSTEAD, I feel like I took a bullet on this one!

My 6.0 F350 is being "bulletproofed" at Bulletproof Diesel" in Mesa Arizona fight now. Had a F250 with a 6.0 that was also "bulletproofed" and was still running well at 996,000 miles when I sold it to a young man in the family and it still runs. I believe that the 6.0, once fixed and maintained is the best engine around.

I’ve been looking at getting a 6.0. I’ve looked on Facebook market place. One of the main thing I see is when people say “fully bulletproofed”. I always ask them what has been done to the truck and they always reply with “deleted and studded”. In the 6.0 power stroke case, that isn’t a full bulletproof. I love how you know so much about these trucks and that you give an accurate run down of what bulletproofing is! Thank you! :)

Agree on what some people say about so-called fully bulletproofed, the previous owner said the same and had the receipts to prove it, than 25k miles after I bought it, part of the #6 injector tip broke off and dove into the cylinder, 7 hours away from home, had to get it trailed home, then borrow my friends truck to go back for the camp trailer, lost my faith in the 6.0 platform! I wish it was more reliable, I really like the truck, but cant get pass how that motor left me stranded and the $3k+ bill to get everything home, not counting the repair costs

I can tell you BOTH of my 6.0 diesels have had exactly the same problems as he describes here. I have had injectors, STC fittings, FICM issues, EGR cooler, etc. fail. I can tell you it takes about 540 lbs. of oil pressure to start the engine from the high pressure oil pump. If one of those fittings leaks (on my 05 they are plastic?) the truck won't start. I called my dad, he came with a rag soaked in starting fluid and we stuck it in the end of the turbo after we removed the air cleaner housing. I hit the starter and the engine gradually sped up and started. I raced to the repair shop. Got the thing fixed. Great video!

I used to be a automotive machinists for years and 6.0 heads were always a blast lol. We always put bronze valve guide and all new seats in the heads since they are bad about cracking the seats. Plus always mill them flat with a CBN bit. But pressure testing was always the first thing. I don’t hundres of 6.0 heads and never had a failure.

One item that could extend the life of a 6Ls that I have not seen discussed in very many videos, is to use the correct or better antifreeze with distilled water in the 6L. I was at a Ford dealer getting the transmission oil and filter replaced when I saw a young new tech performing a radiator flush with a garden hose. An old grizzled tech told him to stop and flush out the radiator again, as he had almost filled it up, then fill up with distilled water and the correct antifreeze. I ask why. The old tech told me the 6.0 water/antifreeze pathways for the EGR cooler and oil cooler would have sediment from hose water build up and block passages. He told me that was one of the biggest issues causing those EGR and oil cooer issues. He showed me an oil cooler and EGR cooler, that were cut in half from a 2004 6L, showing over half of the water flow pathways were blocked with sediment.

its harder to find a mechanic willing to work for labor only. parts markup means your looking for a guy willing to take a paycut, not always the best way to approach a new mechanic. why not just ask the mechanics the price for the job? that's what you want them to do anyways right? if you do find a shop undercutting all the others, please tell everybody the story.

Side note I have a theory that the head gaskets get cooked out of them due to people driving around with bad EGR coolers and running them out of coolant repeatedly but that's just what I've seen a few times with the vt365 in a international 4200 .chassis tuning is drastically different in the 5 tons so that may help towards extended head gasket life also really tough to say

Great video. I have never looked into a 6.0 just because every one I have ever heard says they are terrible. It's good to know they can be made reliable. I had a 7.3 years ago. May be looking for an affordable used diesel again. And 6.0s can be found much cheaper. And I would gladly pay to have this work described to have a great affordable Super Duty.

My 05 king ranch I ran for 220,000 miles bone stock using cetane additive from Ford and it was fine when I sold it. I know the guy that bought it and all he did was delete the egr and emissions as well as a turbo back exhaust and it still runs great.

I have a Theory and something you forgot to mention as a part of Bulletproofing. Most times the Head Gasket and Coolant Burping Problems come from trucks that have an EGR Delete. That's because the Electric Cooling Fan isn't coming on (Thus Cooking the Engine, could also be the reason Coolant Clogs the Oil Cooler) because the 6.0 reads the EGR and 6 other Components to bring on the Cooling Fan. The Fix is to install the BPD 6.0 to 1996 7.3 Mechanical Fan Clutch Conversion. Installed that and problem solved, then came all the coolant leaks from the Sinister EGR Delete Silicone Hoses. Also don't forget to check your Starter Bolts. lol

Dang man I was so so close to buying a 4x4 6-speed manual Powerstroke from a friend of mine she's giving me the deal of a lifetime you wouldn't believe me if I told you the price!! she inherited the truck she's wealthy and just wants it gone she thought it was a 7.3 but.........it's a 6.0 2003 never been bulletproofed as far as she knows!!! Kick in the nuts !!! Always wanted a 6 speed powerstroke but not a 6.0 😢 my old pickup is worn out but still reliable I need reliable daily driver now the price is just ok because it's a 6.0 if it was bulletproofed or a 7.3 it would be a once in a lifetime deal!!!

I used to love my 6.0, its put me on the side of the road twice and I got over it, then last night in the middle of the night with no warning the FICM quit. Im not waiting around for my oil cooler to blow. Getting a V8 F150.

To whomever liked my comment... I did end up getting a 6.0 last week on Tuesday. A 2004 F250 with a rebuilt 2005 6.0. brand new transmission with only 3k miles on it. I didn't get "screwed" I don't think.... But we think it does have a stuck open injector. I just out archoil and switched to rotella t6 yesterday and I have a big drive today so hopefully this archoil works it's magic. Other then that the truck is bulletproofed and somewhat built also so I think it should last me a good amount of time

@@landonhill700 so it's been awhile now I truly think nothing is wrong... I've done so many checks now and have looked at numbers and everything comes back normal... Smokes white on startup but once it gets to about 140° smoke is basically gone and at operating temp of about 185° and some under to about 165° their is no smoke at all... I think it just doesn't like the cold with the delipped pistons and few other mods up there..

Diesel engines are a different beast they cost a little bit more to maintain some of the fixes could be substantially more but you can also get a million miles out of them very few if any gas vehicles even well maintained will get life that long

I have a an 03 6.0l and just replace the Egr cooler and oil cooler and upon further research it was determined that the Coolant and Coolant cap was most if not all of the Problem ,the cap not holding 16 lbs of pressure allowed the coolant and the water boil and to drop all the imperises and it turn allow debris to end up in the oil cooler , so after flushing my coolant system 6 times with the last 2 flushes with denatured water (starter came out 6 six times) heater core included... i replaced all the parts and went back with Peak Global 50/50 mix looking for 157f boiling point and installed a Stant 16 lb cap ,peak global has 0 silica(sand) and has a million mile warranty against corrosion , my truck is happy now and runs like it did when it was new...

I spent thousands of dollars at the dealer on my 06 King Ranch. My truck would stall when making a turn. The final blow was I fuelled it at a one lane gas station and she just wouldn’t start. And there was a line of cars behind me. Anyways I bought a F150 5.0L. It was starting to rust anyways. But I did love that truck.

Honestly my uncle has a 6.0 with 178k miles. Everything is original only thing done to it is the EGR delete. Oil and filter and Diesel filters are changed always on time and so far he has no problems with the truck. Idk i guess if you really just take care on point with the Maintenance they work fine

You may or may not know that Ford designed a push rod that's slightly shorter for the trucks that had machined heads. The shorter head put more pressure on the rod and caused some wear at the camshaft so they quietly redesigned them to solve the issue. Can't recall where I read that but measure a new and an old one and you'll see a miniscule difference but an important one. Hope that helps. Great video.

Is it worth a 2004 6.0 with almost 200k miles to be bulletproofed or do I just save up for my next truck?

I noticed the aftermarket radiator cap...aren't the radiator caps one of the main failure points on these trucks. I've been told to never use aftermarket caps.

A friend of mine had a 6.0 and had it in the shop so much the shop (Ford) they had to replace the cab bolts because they wore out from having to be removed/replaced too many times

That's because it was at a Ford shop/dealership. Ford techs are told replace parts, not fix the problem. Half of the techs at Ford dealers dont know a damn thing about em. NEVER NEVER NEVER bring a diesel back to the dealership!!

Remember, dealerships fix what's broken, a good specialist will help you solve the problem. Except the 6.4s... they're just junk

The stock bolts are torque to yield. They shouldn't be reused even once. Reusing them nearly guarantees a head gasket failure. From the interwebs: A torque to yield fastener (TTY) or stretch bolt is a fastener which is torqued beyond the state of elasticity and therefore undergoes plastic deformation, causing it to become permanently elongated.

The problem with the 6.0 is that you can fix all that common issues and it can still fail on you in some of the less common ones. Like the diesel on coolant problem or the lifter problems. Is so hard and expensive to keep one running right.

I noticed Autolite glowplugs there..in my experience working on diesels 9O% of glowplug failure issues on ANY diesel have been Autolite brand..use Motorcraft glowplugs on every Powerstroke. The cost is maybe .50 cents to a dollar higher each (at least at my local parts stores).

Champion glow plugs get the job done aswell most important is ensuring glow plug harness is in good shape that is generally the cause of glowplugs performance issues

Hey Dustin my son has a 2005 f250 6.0 diesel that has a coolant leak and he just found coolant in his oil it has the whit gunk of doomon the inside of his oil cap. Now my question is, could it be possible that he has a cracked block? The reason why I ask instead of a head gasket blown is since he purchased it a year ago today it has always leaked coolant it leaks only after he has driven ut and it is parked. It does not leak when he is driving it he said. He loses a lot of coolant.

i did my 6.0 in mexico 5 years ago, they said all this bulletproof bullshit is not needed, just more protection on the headgaskets and ive been running great. so far 780k miles on my 6.0

What about the replacement mechanical fan clutch for the problematic electrical fan clutch? The wire on mine got caught in the fan in arizona and left me stranded. I recently had the mechanical fan clutch installed to prevent that from happening again.

Do you have a "Special Tool" to put on the clamp on the backside of turbo? If not tips are welcome. my vehicle is a 05 6.0 liter F-550. Not bulletproofed that I know of.

I just bought an 06 F350 4x4 with 248000 miles. The guy that sold it to me gave me the paper work where he spent $6000 to have oil cooler, injectors, gaskets, and other things done. The truck runs great but yesterday I got in it and turned the key and just got one click nothing else so I had it hauled to my brother in laws garage for repair he's been in business over 40 years he told me most likely it was just the starter but we'll see.

It always takes a 10-15 seconds to build pressure but sometimes when hot it must won't build at all until you let it sit for 10 minutes or so.

Looking to buy a 05 f350 dually with about 135k. Only 5k$ Was a company vehicle that’s upgrading their fleet. I’ll only put 5k miles on it per year hauling firewood and Christmas trees. It’s overkill for sure but seems like a good deal. I’ve never owned diesel before. Is this a bad idea?

On a 6.0L move the oil cooler from the valley of the block to the exterior of the engine with a bulletproof diesel oil cooler, Goes from 16 quarts to 18.5 quarts, And oil stays much cooler.

My question is, Why after I had work done on my 6.0 Every thing replaced except the Turbo. It was just rebuilt. In the morning it takes 8,9 even 12 cranks {turn over} before the engine starts. and when its really cold it won't start till the weather warms up. When the engine warms up it star quickly. New glow plugs. 'I took it back to them {machinic} He changed some module on the valve cover and said that will take care it. Nope it did not. A bit upsetting. So I would love your help on this. I cancelled my Elk hunting trip because My Ford would not get me around this trip. I have never hunted with out my ford. crazy that it may sound. That's the truth. lol

Yeah..that's how the engineers do it - design it to "grenade." Yup...I remember taking "Design to Fail - 201" when I was in college...really difficult course on how to figure out how to engineer things to reliably fail at a specific interval...

Mgtow Jones runs for half a million miles if you take care of it. Diesel comes with more maintenance on it.

i have a 7.3 and a 6.0no. The 7.3 has been great 302k the 6.0no is a POS. If you tow frequently diesel is the way to go but if you only tow once in a while or don't tow long distance gasser it the way to go. The cost of repairs, the few people that know how to fix them and the price of fuel negate any value unless you plan on towing with them.
