Welcome to Ep 4 of Carpe Diem Sailing and Part 1 of our new series: Learn to Sail. In this video we introduce sailing terminology and the basic parts of the boat with an introduction to standing and running rigging using animations, diagrams and live footage. Just what I needed. I've sailed and owned sailboats for 50 years, on & off, but just bought my first "big" boat last year, an old Islander 30, which was built just after I first started sailing (1972). After all these years, I figured that it was time I learned the terminology for parts of the sailboat, etc, or at least get it more clear in my mind what I thought I knew. There's more to know about on the bigger boats. What you shared here was very helpful. I very much appreciate the effort you put into making this video. I learned more in such a short time than any other videos or classes. I'll be coming back again!

It's not really that much work, and it seems much more intimidating than it actually is. There is no feeling like it when you shut off the engine and the boat keeps going and all you hear is the lapping of the waves along the sides. Having said that it's not for everyone which is why power boats were invented

This video series is so good that I keep coming back again after watching and absorbing for a few weeks. I'm on my fourth cycle now, and each time I find new nuggets. There is so much knowledge packed into the videos and the 10 minute or so duration is just right for learning. Kudos. I'm ready for the checklists and cheatsheets mentioned in this video, but I couldn't find them on your website. Could you post a link? I wish I was closer so that I could sign up for in person instruction. I bet I'd learn a lot more from you in person, and it would be great to learn it all on my own boat.

Reminder, standing and running rigging need to be inspected and replaced at the proper intervals, so many boats are out there with rotten lines and standing rigging rusted to break point, (FYI, almost always in behind the treads of the turnbuckle so you won't know if it is bad) replace standing rigging at the right time, BEFORE it is obvious! Or see your mast come down.

Sir What's the difference between cabin , deck and cockpit You said they are self explanatory but not for me :(

No problem. The cabin is everything down below, the living quarters. The deck is the top of the boat that you walk around on. The front is called the foredeck and around the mast is the mid ships deck. The cockpit is the area where the helm is and where the boat is worked from. Traditionally the cockpit is the open area at the back of the boat but there are also centre cockpit boats. Hope this clears it up for you

I have more questions relating to ships = 1) What is a bunk i.e., upper bunk and lower bunk ? 2) What's the meaning of this sentence = "To protect the ship from rough weather, the captain decided to slow the boat down. To do so, they dropped the storm jib and lashed heavy mooring rope in a loop across the stern." 3) What's the meaning of = "But still there was a tremendous leak somewhere below the waterline. I found that nearly all the boat's main rib frames were smashed down to the keel." 4) Meaning of = "To protect the weakened starboard side, I decided to heave-to-with the undamaged port hull facing the oncoming waves using an improvised sea anchor of heavy nylon rope and two 22 litre plastic barrels of paraffin." 😅 Sorry for disturbing you .
