There is so much to be found along our rivers that most folks have no idea about! To be floating down river during the fall must be amazing! Fall was always my favorite time of year. Here in the east, we built our nation along the rivers because they were the highways back then, and still in use to this day.

I just found your channel today. Scanned the build and made it here! We lived on our Catalina 36 sailboat for 6 after retirement in 2011 and cruised the west coast of Mexico. The loop was our next target but life happens so we are caring for family in Oregon. If we don't get to old caring for old folks, we still plan on doing the loop. I love your setup and fuel consumption. If we get to go it will probably be on a small diesel trawler under 36 feet, we need the walk-around queen!! Enjoying your videos, thank you!

Brenton, your video pacing is perfect in matching with life on the Mississippi. And every shot of Wavey brings a smile to my heart. What a good girl! You are doing exactly what I wanted to do after I retired from the CG; explore this river from the top to the bottom, at my own pace, not Uncle Sam's. Maybe one day soon. In the meantime, the voyage of you and Wavey are a fine stand-in for my dream. And I thank you for having us along in your journey. Upcoming spoiler alert: If you ever watched the movie "The Straight Story", about a man who made a long distance road trip to see his sick brother (while riding his lawn tractor to get there!), know that Alvin Straight made the crossing of the Mississippi from Iowa into Wisconsin, right at that bridge in Lansing, Iowa! All the best and as always, be safe!!!

Some 20 years ago we did the Loop in a PH sailboat. We also left mid October from East mid Michigan reaching Grand Haven, MI around the first of November where we caught 11 inches of snow on the decks. That was the same time Buffalo, NY received 49 inches. We made it across Lake Michigan after waiting for the 14' waves to die down. We broke ice for multiple days until we reached Kentucky Lakes. Great trip but next time I'd leave a bit earlier. Love your content.

Brenton Get one of those small wheeled carts used to strap a suitcase on it to carry your gas cans May only carry one but that is better than nothing. Also wheels are small so may be rough going over uneven ground. Perfect for paved areas. They are just like the ones people us in airports but minus the built in suitcase and therefore much much smaller in that it takes up less space on the boat. You could even give Wavy a ride when she gets tired!

I have a favorite: The yellow and maroon near the downstream tip of the island. It's my favorite because it mine! :) The houses are actually called boathouses. A houseboat is a boat that has a house built on it, like yours. The stationary structures like those on Latsch Island were originally designed to be a house for a boat. People put garage doors on the river side and pulled their boats into the house to keep them out of the weather. At some point owners started making them into places to hangout for a weekend, to party and eventually to live in. There was a move by the US Army Corp of Engineers, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the MN DNR to remove all the boathouses in the 1980s I think. The owners of boathouses on Latsch formed an association and eventually negotiated with several government agencies to allow them to remain. The island is actually owned by the City of Winona, a gift from an early environmentalist John Latsch. The boathouse are subject to regulations that are administered by the City. Some of the boathouses have full time year round residents. Others are lived in seasonally. Some are used occasionally throughout the year. An interesting anomaly: Part of Latsch Island and other lands that John Latsch gave to the City of Winona are actually in the State of Wisconsin. The line runs across the back channel, across the island and into the main channel upstream from mine. So, the last 6 or 8 boathouses on the downstream end of the island are technically in Wisconsin on land owned and controlled by the City of Winona, Minnesota.

The rules are published in every map book. Dam 5 on the Upper Mississippi has zero to do with TVA. :) The rules are Army Corps of Engineers. But, since you mentioned it, TVA requires EVERY person on board to have on a PFD, not just the line handlers. :) They also require engines to be shut off. From their website... "In the Lock Chamber Enter the lock at no-wake speed. Tie off your boat to a floating mooring post; do not tie it to a ladder or any other fixed structure within the lock. In a crowded lock chamber, you may also be asked to tie off another boat. Engines should be shut down during the lockage, passengers should remain seated, and everyone aboard should wear a personal floatation device during the entire process."

I just posted a comment. I own one of the boathouses. Most of the owners are friendly people. Not all of them want to be out in the public. Come visit some time. I am about to start the Great Loop from Mobile AL where I bought a boat.

Hello Brenton and Wavey! Great video. thanks for sharing your adventures. My favorite Houseboat was the octagonal barn looking one next to the red and yellow one. I am drawn to round buildings. Fair winds and following seas! David.

Look at a wind sock to keep you straight I don’t know if it would work, but worth a try. You might need one in front and one in back

If you had a remote controlled trolling motor you could mount it in the front and use it kinda like a bow thruster and between the two you could keep it straight

Just an idea if it was me I'd try to find 4 12v trolling motors and mount them on all four corners of your boat plumb them into a battery system possibly solar charged with the controllers mounted in where you could control them that way when you are traveling through the docks you can keep your boat in the direction you want it to stay by running the trolling motors

Another great video, and so well done . I like the houseboat Island, some of those are pretty interesting looking. And Autumn has always been my favorite time of year. Unfortunately it's such a short season here in New England I totally agree with you how about the horsepower of the motor, since it's always better to have more than enough power than not enough .. I'm wondering if some of them local fishermen don't like the houseboats because those people can't be taxed like they would if they owned a home ?
