1/25 became the adopted scale for American companies because the way the tools were made was to build a 1/10 buck (also the way many fullsize car companies operated) then transfer the measurements via a pantagraph to a tool and reducing them by 2.5 was the easiest way. In Europe we traditionally used the Imperial half inch to the foot 1:24, when Monogram formed they wanted to stand out and their gimmick was to be slightly larger than the competition by using 1:24. They obviously also had an eye on European / foreign sales. The Japanese kit makers also tended to adopt 1:24, although Tamiya's first car kit was a Dodge Charger stock car in 1:25 they copied directly from MPC.

You might comment on some of the model car kit boxing mistakes. For example, the Johan AMC AMX box says 1:25 but it's really 1/24. Another one is Entex/Eidai Monza GT aka XP-797 with the box claiming 1:25 but really measures out to be 1:28 or right in between 1/24 and 1/32. Those scales are fine but the box should read correctly ! Because of rarity and expense may be a bad purchase.
@DavidRLentz-b7i8 ай бұрын
Well, this is appreciably more revealing than I had expected, and surprising in the summary! I had figured the difference would be negligible; it is readily visible. To my mind, 1:24th-scale is an archaic carryover from pre-metric measurements-ounces, inches, teaspoons, etc., all blindly avoiding-ignoring?-the utility of our Mk 1 base ten calculator (our ten fingers). I am poor at maths, so base ten is rather more manageable for me. (Its numerical cousins, 1:72nd-, 1:48th-, and 1:32nd-scales I concede as legacy scales.) The most basic scale for most large objects of our making, it seems to me, would be 1:100, suitable for large structures (buildings, sailing ships, large aircraft, nonfictional spacecraft, etc.-even now can I imagine a highly-detailed USS Constitution with a full crew at full sail upon the high seas; or a Saturn V Manned Launch Vehicle-etc.). The next logical step would be 1:25th-scale, appropriate for most wheeled vehicles, inland freshwater boats. small aeroplanes, etc. Next, 1:50th-scale would develop from that; however, it is so close to 1:48th-scale that I would defer to that. 1:35th-scale strikes me as an anomaly, an especially inexplicable one. I understand it to have derived expressly from Tamiya, which I find bafflingly peculiar in such an otherwise incisive, razor-sharp business. I find it quite small for the military vehicles, settings, accoutrements, figures, etc., that occupy much of that segment; I very much enjoy exacting detail, and being terribly myopic (my eyes usually manage to focus-well, most of the time-round 10 cm from a surface), I enjoy something of a facility for it (I just wish I had greater facility for fine tools, stronger hands, a back that does not ache, etc.!). Also, many of the devotees of 1:32nd-scale combat aircraft, which the ground combat arena would be a natural progression, and to which 1:35th-scale otherwise would lend itself, find the gulf too significant to discount. I actually enjoy playing with various scales, especially with military planes dramatising close formation manœuvring, or engaged in a dog-fight. I call this a forced perspective aerial diorama, in which I place in the foreground a large-scale (e.g.,1:32nd) model of a fighter, and behind it, though elevated perhaps 20 degrees, a replica of the same type of aircraft, this one in the next-smaller scale (in this example, 1:48th). After that, one in 1:72nd-scale, continuing as far as practicable. With the Consolidated B-24D Liberator USAAF Heavy Bomber, one could begin with 1:32nd-scale, and at the other end, position farther back models in 1:92nd-and 1:144th-scales. The latter two sets (one would incorporate perhaps three or four of these little duplicates) may not be terribly accurate, nor would they be well-detailed, though they would have no need for such. I like working in (amongst models in other categories) 1:25th-scale tractor-trailer rigs. One evening, I mentally was comparing the Boeing 747-8 commercial aircraft with a conventional tractor drawing a fifty-three toot-long trailer, totalling round seventy-two feet; the jet would be appreciably over 3½ times its length! Moreover, its cargo carrying capacity of 153 tons is round 3.9 times that of a semi (safety regulations set this at 40 tons), meaning that it can carry more than what the hypothetical 3½ tractor-trailer rigs can-and at roughly eight times the speed, crossing the entire USA in round four hours). I then contemplated a scenario in which several tractor-trailer rigs would carry such a highly unusual load; the aspiring novelist in me imagined a film production needing for a location shoot a full-size Boeing 747 fuselage. This endeavour would require five of the semis (in this is length the issue, more than weight, or the trailer’s load capacity) to carry upon a lowboy (during transit, its closeness to the ground would offer the best balance and stability possible) the aircraft’s empty fuselage, segmented into five 50-foot portions (I do not know, and I have no means to determine, what each would weigh). Now THAT would be some convoy, even in just 1:25th-scale!

Thanks for giving us the scale differences. Your comment about mixing scales worked for me . On a side note. 1/32 scale slot cars today are popular with the slot car crowd more so than HO scale. Analog or digital. Carerra makes slot cars today in both 1/32 and 1/24 cars that run on the same Track, the cars are highly detailed just check eBay for Scalextric, SCX or Carerra and these slot cars can run $30-100+ a piece.

That Revell kit was designed in 2013 and originally released as a Hurst/ Olds. I did it in SolidWorks for Revell when they were still in Chicagoland. They gave me a lot of reference photos but I also had to do a lot of detective work on my own. I don't discriminate by any means between 1:24 and 1:25 scale cars. I just love to build cars in general. IF you are the type to ONLY stick to ONE scale you're going to miss out on some good stuff. Example: the "boothill Express" "lil coffin" and "like deuce" are all timeless classics in 24th scale. OR you'll miss out on trying to get "one year of every Corvette, or Mustang or Camaro" by only sticking to one scale.

I heard somewhere, that to keep shipping costs down all cars had to fit in the same size box. Therefore while a Pinto would easily fit, a long Cadillac of the 70's would have to be reduced further to fit in the same box. So some scale inconsistencies might be present.
@CycolacFan5 жыл бұрын
That was the case with early Jo-Hans up to about 1962/3 when they switched to flat boxes. The box actually cost more to make than the kit inside it so they made the plastic to fit the cardboard.

One of my old "Model Buildin' Buddies" once told me he made his 1/25th scale model cars look a little more "Accurate" by using 1/24th scale tires and wheels instead of the original, smaller scale wheels and tires. So I just had to watch this video all the way through, and although the subject of tires and wheels weren't covered, I feel the bit at the end about dropping a 1/24th scale engine in a 1/25th scale body proved this point well.

Good article on difference 1:25 vs 1:24. Personally, it is about the details and I have always wondered why some companies do a bland job of a kit when more fidelity to the real subject is not done to such an iconic automobile. Time and money dictate a lot but then some other company comes along and creates the same model with better details, your kit is back shelved, no profits in that. The white kit has better engraving such as the side chrome that will get foiled, Nomad harder to do because detail is light. The yellow hood fits both because of the inner fenders in relation to motor chamber is out of proportion. Nomad's wiper blade mounts totally wrong and so obvious. But then again the three little accents on the white kit's front fenders are heavy and spaced too far apart. Why am I so picky is because I have owned three '57 Chevys. Thanks for letting me rant, cheers Eh!

I am in the automotive and bike phase of my life. About the cars: how do I figure out if a fat 20" tire will fit on a 16" rim of a kit? I can see how the two scales 24 & 25 can be visually grating and an irritant for modelers who like to pose models for effect like your NASCAR diorama. example Its surprising just how much difference one little number can make. But after a while I got used to it. I think that it all comes down to what your eyes can accept. Like I would not pass up on a kit because of the differences in scale. I mean, like nobody dies and the scales are pretty close. Mixing dissimilar scales, say like, 25 & 32 has one look possibly more toy like than the other. Another great show, Lucka Cee.
@Milner625 жыл бұрын
Yep it really hurts when you want to build a diorama, but you can use it to your advantage by forcing a perspective by putting the smaller scale at the back to give the illusion that it is farther away than the larger 1/24 scale car. I personally wouldn't want to do this with my diorama I want to build as I am trying to keep it as compact as possible in 1/24 scale which requires me to figure a way to slice nearly 3/4 of the dealership away and only build 1/4 of the dealership which is hard for me to do since the show room floor took up nearly 1/2 of the interior space with no walls. If I could find blue prints for the building where pillars were I could use the pilliars for a cut off spot but because of this, I cant do a forced depth of view perspective by using a mix of 1/24 and 1/25 scale. Thankfully '56 Ford cars can be had in 1/24 or 1/25 scale be it Thunderbird or Victorias or Fairlanes. Even trucks can be had in both scales. Now for nascar it hurts me cause I cant find some of the stock cars in 1/24 scale so I can properly show the evolution of stock cars from the 50`s to the 80`s.

Ive always been a fan of larger car kits as there are more details. But between 1/24 and 1/25 scale I don't mind too much unless I have a specific plan. Such as the diorama I want to build in 1/24 scale of the dealership my '56 Fairlane was bought from new I would want the other '56 Fords to be 1/24 scale to keep everything in scale. Another thing is like wanting to build old Nascar stock cars from the 50`s, 60`s, 70`s, and 80`s then I would prefer to have them all the same scale as I want the evolution to be properly shown without having some newer ones appear slightly larger giving the impression that they started to get bigger.

The reason I came here is because I want to build a dream car I can't afford in the real world. The issue is I can't find the motor and suspension parts in the same scale as the body. I'm looking to blend the GT-R Motor, suspension and wheels/tires into the 70-72 Chevy Nova body and maybe make it a widebody tuner type car. Am I crazy to even consider this? I know the six cylinder is a long motor to start with but it being in 1/24th makes it even longer in the engine bay of a 1/25th, not to mention where it might center due to the AWD set up. There is a 70 Camaro with GT-R running gear/motor in the real world, but that scale is 1:1 so yeah it can work.

I have hundreds of models like you and cars to me are best in 1/24 much more detail Revell of Germany also has better quality than the American version As a side note all Roadrunners and GTX in real life were sold under the Satellite name of which I own a real one Currently building 1/24 Plymouth Superbird

Of my collection, i have 4 1|24 scale cars and they stand out alot from a sea of 1|25 scale cars. It really is annoying.
