The huge home vs. huge space question is a deep one! We have a few acres, a modern but not pretentious house, and relative seclusion - at this point in our lives wouldn't have it any other way. In times past there were dreams of the mansion but now I'm not driven to impress and in the end can't take it with me. Further, a common thread amongst those I talk to is that "our kids don't want our stuff", so having more than you need is to some degree just gratification. Interesting question - perhaps no definitive answer.

Another KZbinr (Cat) has this as their home port too as it's a wonderful Hurricane Hole. So many memories during these past few episodes (and this one). Was there still an old WWII barge in the area as you left the wider area of Daytona Beach and before 'Highbridge' (the low draw bridge approaching Palm Coast?)? If so, the Owner (have been told he passed away a few years ago) would come out on deck and flash us. We had UK guests on board once and they got a big laugh from the experience. The folks with those homes may have other homes with more land, or a condo in a big city, or who knows, a small percentage of the houses are probably just very expensive AirBNB homes as investment/income properties. Expensive locations are expensive for a reason, often having to do with location, location, location. Maybe they'd be happy in smaller or less exclusive places, but very high price does keep out the riff raff from the neighborhood.

Regarding the mega Mansions, there is a tendency, both on and off the waterfront, to take expensive land and build the biggest possible house you can right up to what the zoning requires for a setback. I'm not sure I agree with this. In fact I know I don't since I live on 3/4 of an acre and only have 1500 ft² of house. I saw this in California though, where land was very expensive, and the houses were as large a footprint as they could be. I think I'm with Brenton on this.
