John Mayall is doing "Room to Move" here (not "California Campground) but with different verse lyrics compared to the original from 1969. The chorus is the same though. The song became a trade mark of his as an encore ending of his shows. This show was aired a couple of months after the release of Mayall's "Ten Years Are Gone" album. It features Mayall with guitarist Freddy Robinson, Red Holloway on Saxophone, Mayall's old bandmate from the 60's Keef Hartley on the drums, Blue Mitchell plays the trumpet and Victor Gaskin on the bas.

The Midnight Special was a historic show. In many ways. It blended disparate styles in a way few others did. Maybe Top 'O The Pops at it best was a reflection of this US version. I love seeing live performances and this show did more than a few classic presentations of such. Even if they performed with a soundtrack many were basically "live on top" of the recorded tracks which made them unique. So thankful that The Midnight Special is now releasing these great shows. This show includes what I'd have to call an iconic TV performance of a song popular at the time. That would be Todd Rundgren's "Hello, It's Me". A classic song in a very memorable TV rendition.

"Four Tops" creates music that makes you smile :) I recall when "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" 19:18 was a huge hit on this antiquated device We Ancient Ones called "The Radio". Four Tops made such a wonderful contribution to the Music Wealth and Health of Humankind. Not just their very famous Hit Songs, but ALL their music. What do the peak of Mt Everest, a Rapidly Spinning Toy, a Coke bottle seal, and a Toupée have in common?

He has stated it was a mistake. He had a gay friend costume & makeup guy and he overdid it. But as pointed out, it was the times o he pulled it off. Let the music do the talking, and it does. Seeing Mott's performance 50+ years on is revealing. They all have on the same outfits and it's the same set as in the October 19, 1973 show. I thought for over 50 years they made a return appearance to the Midnight Special after the earlier show, but now it looks more likely they actually taped all four songs on 9-11-73 (and watch for the dark, swift edit between the Four Tops' introduction and Buffin's opening drumming on "Drivin' Sister"). It was probably their first live concert appearance with new guitarist "Ariel Bender" (Luther Grosvenor) after Mick Ralphs left the band in August. Anyway, I always liked their performance of "Hymn For the Dudes" on this show a lot.

Prior to this the band taped a 4-song set for Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert, also featuring “Drivin’ Sister”. It was the band’s first performance with Ariel Bender. Yes, the 4 songs for The Midnight Special were recorded on the same day, and divided up for 2 programs.

Fun too watch the newly started Todd Rundgren's Utopia, though it's lineup #2 I believe (with Todd and Jean Yves "M. Frog" Labat remaining from the first lineup, with Ralph Schuckett, Mark "Moogy" Klingman, John Siegler and Kevin Ellman having replaced keyboardist David Mason and the Sales brothers, Tony and Hunt).

The Four Tops were a couple of years away from another label change- on ABC at this point after leaving Motown a year earlier. They’d end up on Casablanca with The Village People as labelmates. An album was planned- “The Four Tops Meet The Five Bottoms” or something like that. Bad studio chemistry ended that project, The Village People weren’t into Stubbs.

@@KittyGrizGriz Mine too, I saw you commented on Mark - Almond. Those two musicians Jon Mark, John Almond played with Mayall. They're on the orig. "Room To Move' from "The Turning Point album". I watched this show when it orig. aired, some I remember, some unsure. i do recall the band "Wet Willie' appeared. Hope they post that.

@@jamesmack3314 😂 😆 I meant during the time period that The Midnight Special tv show aired; February ‘73 - March ‘81. It’s still so strange that I don’t remember watching any of these segments back then, I was heavily into music, think I was too busy hanging out with friends, going to live rock ‘n’ roll & disco venues.

The amazing thing about The Four Tops is they stayed together until Lawrence Payton passed away. Abdul Fakir is the only one alive from the classic lineup, and he's still leading the Four Tops.

44:49 anybody catch the lyrics “The Nazz” which was the name of Todd Rundgrens ‘67 band formed in Philadelphia? “The Nazz Are Blue” is a Yardbirds song which inspired Todds band name. What are Mott the Hoople referencing here? Hmmm, now I’m curious…anyone know?
