Very helpful. I was actually looking for the name of the sound that the Mariachi makes, but this is helpful, because I can role my tongue some ways, but not always when speaking.

This is somewhat helpful, as I am trying to practice doing Cartoon Cat’s voice, (if you don’t know who he is just search “Cartoon Cat monster” or “Cartoon Cat Trevor Henderson”) and I always imagine him… not necessarily “rolling” his r’s, but more or less kind of… purring in the back of his throat whenever he says the letter r.

Have you been able to accomplish it yet? I am a Spanish teacher. I was born in the US, but in 2nd grade was moved to Costa Rica. I heard my dad practicing what his language teacher told him to do: lay on your back on your bed, but scoot so your head hangs over the edge. Then practice words that have RR sound. It took him about 9 months to a year but was finally able to do it. Hang in there!

Okay, I finally figured out how to do this and I have an extra piece of advice for the weary traveler, an epiphany that helped me figure it out after failing pretty hard for awhile. The epiphany did not arrive in this form (I realized part A after part B helped me to achieve success), but I have broken it into two pieces that will hopefully help anyone who was struggling in the manner that I was struggling. To people who can already make the sound: this information might sound extremely obvious (although I suspect it's possible that some of you intuitively grasped the roll movement without consciously breaking it down into tongue-generated action vs. sound-generated action [instead perceiving the action as a whole, thus observing simply that the "tongue must vibrate in a certain place"]), but I have a feeling I'm not alone in being formerly confused about this, so here goes: *A*: The vibration in your tongue that creates the rolling sound is not generated by your tongue. This means that when people say, "The tip of your tongue vibrates," they could also say, "Your voice vibrates the tip of your tongue." For me, this was a critical distinction. Intuitively, I was operating under the assumption that my tongue was supposed to generate the vibrational energy somehow, and I had no idea how I was supposed to move my tongue that fast. I am aware that he said something to the effect of "keep the tip of your tongue loose," but I did not take that to mean, "you are only controlling the placement of your tongue with your tongue." I just thought the tip of the tongue had to be quite loose for the tongue muscle to make the tip vibrate that fast. I did not go over the process very consciously at first, so I am not completely sure why I misinterpreted the process in that way. One guess is that it could be because I am so accustomed to speaking Lazy American, in which basically every new sound is a tongue movement (made with the tongue muscle), which perhaps lead me to expect that the sound is made by moving my tongue really fast. My impression was reinforced by the idea that saying "butter" really fast would help (like I'm supposed to practice moving my tongue fast), but I don't think that helped me. What helped me was the understanding that my voice produces all vibration, whereas my tongue is purely used to shape the flow of air (after which is remains in a fixed position); and, very importantly, the epiphany that occurred to me in the form of part B. *B*: Curling your tongue and moving the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth can each be used as tools which help to manipulate any vibrating tongue sound into a vibrating "r" sound. This is how I found success. Granted, it still took me a few minutes of serious concentration. I did not feel like saying "butter" to myself in the shower for the next three months like one kid said he did in his video. I will explain this strategy more thoroughly for those who would appreciate that. I should note that I did have an advantage in that I could already make a vibrating tongue sound in the back of my throat. If you can't do that yet, I recommend trying it, because I personally found it much easier to get that part of my tongue to vibrate rapidly. You can vibrate the back of your tongue by making an extended, arguably comical, "ehhhhhh..." sound, then raising the back of your whole tongue (no need to curl, yet) slowly toward the back portion of the roof of your mouth until it is close enough that the flesh of your tongue vibrates against the roof of your mouth *as a natural consequence of its close proximity to closing the gap entirely (dampening the sound to a moan) and the way you release your air.* This is key. When I was a kid making this sound, I think I assumed intuitively that I was moving my tongue muscle really fast. Now, I realize I am making that sound by vibrating my tongue against my mouth using my larynx to generate vibrational energy. For those who grew up in a family that allowed the sort of thing, vibrating your tongue in the back of your throat is very similar to the motion with which you gargle water. Transitioning from gargling water to continuing the vibration after you swallow might help. I'm calling this the "gargle sound" from now on. Now, assuming you can vibrate the back of your tongue against the back of your mouth with the gargle sound, you can move the vibration in the back of your tongue forward toward the tip of your tongue until you nail the sound he is doing in the video. Basically, you begin with the gargle sound, then slowly and carefully (maintaining the vibration between your tongue and the roof of your mouth) change the shape of your jaw and the placement of your tongue until you are forming an 'r' sound while the tip of your tongue vibrates against the roof of your mouth. A breakdown of the tongue relocation process might help you to move your tongue and jaw in just the right way: The 'r' sound results from having your tongue force a lot of the air around the outside of your mouth (around your teeth). You'll notice this if you just prolong the 'r' in 'robot' and feel the location of your tongue with your finger (centered near the roof of your mouth, forcing most air up, left, and right). Thus, curling your tongue is what naturally must happen in order to allow some air to pass between your vibrating tongue and your mouth. Growling through a gargle (the most serious kind of growl, obviously) makes an 'r' sound in which the back of the tongue is vibrating. If you make a growling, gargling 'r' and look in a mirror, you might be able to notice some modest tongue curvature during the formation of that sound toward the back of your tongue. If you begin with an 'r' growl and then slowly lift the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth, you should be able to find a place where the tip of your tongue starts vibrating against the roof of your mouth. You will still probably be vibrating too heavily toward the back of your throat at this point, but once you have the back and tip of your tongue vibrating, it is simply a matter of reducing the amount of vibration in the back (by lowering that part of your tongue) while maintaining tip vibration until you have a nice, frontal, rolling 'r'. Man, I must be bored.

Thanks, I still can't do it, but I did get closer than I ever had. I'm able to get it to flap a little by starting at an uvular trill and slowly curling and rearranging my tongue until its pressing up against my ridge. I'm getting more of a Z sound over the G throat sound, certainly nothing like the Spanish RR or standard trill. But I suppose I need to keep trying and practicing in order to turn that into an R sound. I wish somebody had told me this sound really had nothing to do with a alveolar flap beyond tongue position.

Incredible! I have had difficulty getting this sound right my ENTIRE life! You won't believe how much you've helped me with this video. I have what is called a "bray", where I can't make the R trill but rather make more of a purring sound at the back to compensate. This is because my tongue's frenulum is shorter than your average person's, also making the tip of the tongue flatter than usual. I am from South Africa, and my native language is Afrikaans, which features the tongue trill in EVERY WORD WITH AN R!!! So you can imagine how embarrassing my childhood was, not being able to make this sound properly. The funny thing is that no-one has ever tried to teach me properly, until now. Your video has taught me how to achieve the tongue trill almost perfectly. I will be practising this on a daily basis from now on. Thank you so very very much!

Thank you, this is excellent. I had thought that I was unable to do a tongue trill, but in less than ten minutes you had me doing them like a Frenchman! What did it for me was the velociraptor tip: before, I hadn't been using enough vocal force. (Now my throat is a bit sore, but it's a good sore!) As a former linguistics student, I appreciate the references to the places of articulation in the mouth, as opposed to the "just go like this" technique used by some people with half an idea about what they're doing. Like some others, I also came to this video because the tongue trill is the first prerequisite to performing the Chewbacca sound.

OMFG!! Thank You So MUCH!!! I am 38 years old and believed for a long time that I would never be able to roll my R's. I had a singing teacher try to show me 20 years ago and I didn't get it, and that's when I concluded I never would. Now after just three nights of watching this video and then practicing for maybe 15 minutes afterwards each time I have made major progress! So far I have the rolling tongue action going really well, but am still working on making the actual R sound I have the tongue going. It still sounds really hollow with too much "Hard H" sound in it, but I am not worried because each night I make so much progress, I am sure in a week or two it will be Grrrreat! ;)
@spartaknumerouno9 жыл бұрын
2:29-2:36 - that. Curling the front of your tongue up is key. Rolling the sides up is not necessary. You need to exercise your tongue to be able to make the hard R sound. You need to gain sufficient command of the currently-dormant muscles in and along the underside of your tongue's tip. Saying butter for hours on end might help. Not in producing the R you're after, mind you, but in training your muscles so that you eventually become able to make that sound. Here's another trick. Try to make kind of chirping sounds (like a parakeet) while squeezing air bubbles from saliva with the tongue's tip rolled-back and pressed against the roof of the mouth. To that end, stiffen your tongue while rolling its muscles just in the area that's in contact with the roof. Have a bite of an apple if your mouth becomes dry. Alternatively, do the following. Stick your tongue out about half-way and bend the tip slightly up. Press the underside of the tip againts the tips of your index and middle finger. Press with the tongue, not with the fingers. Keep pressing, then relax. Repeat. Change pressure. Apply hard pressure on the side of your index finger, then shift it toward the middle finger. Try rolling those tiny tongue-muscles side to side, then back to back. Of course, there will be no feedback or positive reinforcement, it may seem meaningless. Well, it isn't. Your tongue will become somewhat numb and your bottom jaw will start aching. Good. Means your tongue is getting the work out it needs. After a few months, perhaps weeks, attempt to pronounce a few Russian or Spanish rolling-R tongue-twisters and you'll be surprised at your success. It's best not to work with english-language words. After all, it's much easier to practice new speaking habits with unfamiliar words, rather then unlearn something you've been accustomed to all your life. FiInally, do not strive to "relax your tongue" and "let it flap". First, the tongue is not at all relaxed when the R is produced, it's just that different muscles are in play. Second, to roar out a series of trilling hard-R sounds in a row, one doesn't flap the tongue, one lets the muscles contract... on their own.

THANK YOU! I've been struggling on trilling the R for years. As a lover of music, and a former choir, barbershop, and a cappella singer, I never thought to incorporate music to help me learn to trill the R. At first, listening to how you produce your trill I was thinking this sounded just like all the other videos I'd watched previously. But I found that when you incorporated the scale exercise it took my mind off focusing on producing the trill and it just happened. I trilled, albite with some challenge in the high register (I'm a bass), with just a little effort. The more I relaxed into the exercise the easier it became to produce the trill. I will use what I learned here to continue my musical, lyrical, and language learning journey. THANK YOU!

@NearlyBatman2 жыл бұрын
@David Clement-Horton I also had trouble whistling for the longest time, until I finally realized it was all about the tongue, not the lips. Sure the lips have to be In the right shape, but that's the easy part and you probably already have it. Using my tongue and soft palate I can move the whistle two octaves without changing my lips. Something that might help, say a short (plosive) Duh-. A little bit forward of the position your tongue is in after you say it, kinda in the middle of your mouth vertically and forward of the ridge of your hard palate is about where you want your tongue to be when whistling. Close your lips in tight O and blow at different rates to try and get the right amount of air flow (which is also important) and you should be close-ish. Hope this helps and and have a good day!

Anthony, here! Thanks so much for answering my question, YAY! I've worked with you during the Summer of 2012 , wasn't for too long (only for a few weeks), so I'm not sure as to whether or not you remember me. Prayerfully, I'll be able to return soon to work with you and/or your staff for a more extensive period of time! You guys are seriously the best! Many blessings to you.

My issue is that I have the "back of the tongue" down pat for different sounds, but always struggle with the tip of the tongue. I always had it just a tad forward and tensed to where I could get the trill going, but only with great force and through the right side of my tongue tip. Being drunk and participating through the video, I now understand that I just needed to tuck the tip of my tongue a tad further back and _presto_, I got the proper sound. Now to work with it for all the fantastic nothings I'll be doing with my new-found knowledge hahaha
@dawnhirsh6263 Жыл бұрын
That's great. I'm not trilling yet, but the tongue is at least moving on its own from the air. The curve of the tongue and thinking about the back really helped.

I think I might be doomed. I just... can't wrap my head and my tongue around it! D: As a native Dutch speaker I have used the uvular trill (the rolling R in the back of the mouth) instead of the alveolar trill (front rolling R) all my life, and it sounds really close. It's this sound: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Uvular_trill.ogg I have also spent months learning how to pronounce and use the Japanese R, also known as the alveolar tap or flap. Which sounds much like a rolling R with one roll, so to say. (example: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Alveolar_tap.ogg Mine doesn't sound as nice as this, though) And of course I have mastered the English R too, as well as R-colored vowels and the related "Gollum accent". But despite this repertoire of R sounds I have never been able to pronounce a true proper front-of-the-mouth rolling R. And it saddens me a little not being able to pronounce various words from various languages the way they're technically supposed to. Including my own native language, for crying out loud!

Wow, this technique really helps, esp the part of making the sound using the back of tongue. I have tried many techniques but none of them worked, until this one. Now i could at least pronounce some similar sounds, i decide to practice this method everyday until i can pronounce a clear trill. Thanks a lot!
