Hey Ben, sitting here bored quiet afternoon in the office, so am binge watching the 9 hour build again, you mentioned needing a better way of holding the guitar body down to the bench when carving with the angle grinder/saburrtooth. get some old style hold fast, drill a series of holes in the top of the bench to fit the them and you're golden. You can glue rubber or leather scraps to the fact of the hold fast so it doesn't mar/dent the wood surface.

Forget the Hepa filters and forget shop vacuums. Have a look at "central vacuum systems". They have a more powerful motor, a massive collection bin and they live in a box outside the building. All of the dust that passes through the filter is outside anyway, plus it's way less noisy as it's not in the building. These are common in America, not so much over here but after I fitted one, I would never go back. You just plug a flexible hose into the wall and off you go.
@yanney46676 жыл бұрын
I wish I had that in the last shop I was in. Massive woodshop, but we only had 1 vacuum and it only swapped between two machines. Breathing in red cedar dust in 100 degree heat all day sucks haha.

16:47: things you can say in a guitar workshop but not at the dentist: "and we have some cavities, awesome"
@raoulduke83827 жыл бұрын
Ben... If you are going to make those (brilliantly designed) cavity covers by hand on the 90hr build, I would suggest investing in that disc sander. Its the only way those edges will be perfectly 90 degrees square, for the tightest most seamless joint.

At the 19:35 mark you question "a jig that will hold a guitar body down" and they do have something like this called "suction cup sanding jig" you might be interested in looking into.
@larrytaylor52227 жыл бұрын
They also have vacuum systems, if you watch the video here on KZbin titled "Making a Guitar | Handcrafted Woodworking | Où se trouve: Greenfield Guitars" (without quotations lol) and go to the 16:45 mark you'll see what I'm talking about, he has his setup vertically but I'd imagine a horizontal setup is also available. I hope this helps.
@patrickjaroch50847 жыл бұрын
heres a thought , make a mold of your pick up cavities and attach it to the plank then you can just essentially plug the body onto the jig if need be you can put a layer of tape around the mold once its done to make it tighter. i imagine you route a lot of bodys with the same cavities
@davidrahn99037 жыл бұрын
Considering they do most of their bodies on the cnc now, even their master built guitars I believe, I think it might be pretty pointless. A very interesting idea though.

You need to build a sand bag out of leather abou two inches thick about the side of the pad you are using and it will conform to the curve of the guitar body and allow you to clamp it securely and flat

These videos are always so inspiring ! A question pops into my mind though, I'm building a guitar with the same kind of wooden backplate, my problem is it has moved and curved :( What would you recommend to straighten it out ? Planing it would just make it under 5mil thick, which would be too thin for my plans. Thanks, keep 'em coming !

@CrimsonCustomGuitars7 жыл бұрын
+A1BASE it works well but a wooden backplate will want to warp, especially if it is thin, so screws are advised.

Crimson Custom Guitars would it not be better to just switch to metal back plates. Perhaps anodize them?
