This is the first video I've watched on this channel. I've sailed a bit over my lifetime but yet to do an ocean passage. I'm 37, plan to start sailing full-timeish in a bit over a year, and I sometimes feel I've started too late. So you, Bill, are an inspiration to me. I wish I'd taken the brave leap about 12 years ago when I first heard the sea calling to me. But better late than never and better now (or close to) than at some fuzzy point in the future

I agree with Jason, Patrick. I was raised by my mother who as a single parent wanted me to sail in my youth. But all my friends had power boats, and I expressed that. I dabbled with power boats, but now at 76 I bought a new Com-Pac 23 Pilothouse and named it "Late Start". In honor of my Mother I have named the diesel inboard after her...."Melva". I'm sure she's smiling from "behind the door". Also, like Jason, you are one of the best at telling of your joy on the water. Thank you for the inspiration....Bob

You are an hero. Hundreds of thousands of people your age and younger stay at home with the TV remote control doing nothing. You enjoy life. - Rest reassured that your Mother knows your name and loves you. She is not here with you, but no matter where she is, she hears you. Lastly, don’t spend one second replying stupid comments about your boat. You have the most advance electronics, you doubled all the key elements of the boat and you have spares. In addition, you have the harness with you at all times, I see the yellow life-lines. Youu have a huge reserve of diesel, food for months. Your boat is seaworthy and you have the skills and knowledge. Congratulations for doing what you do and for inspiring thousands of people, being me one of them.

"seaworthy" is an entirely relative term. Almost any boat is worthy to cross the calmest sea. Almost no boats are worthy to face the worst the sea might give. And no boat is seaworthy in the wrong hands. There's a wave out there somewhere right now that will pitchpole any small boat and break most large ships. It's a matrix of risk calculations every time. Designing/building for one type of risk can increase another type. Do you build a super heavy boat that will withstand almost anything but be unable to outrun any threat and will sink likea stone if breached - or go the other way? Do you rely on insurer-driven checklists of features and equipment (that in no way mitigate against a fundamentally bad design), or do you set your own risk parameters, consider eventualities and plan intelligently for your specific usage? I favour the later.

Your Mother will be watching over you on your travels. Great series and fab to see that age doesn’t necessarily limit real adventures!

I think seaworthiness is much more a function of the crew than many realise. It is the crew who prepares himself and the boat for the voyage, and the crew who decides how to act in each situation throughout the voyage. Open sterns have proven themselves to be very sensible in modern lightweight boats which sit on the water not deep in the water: a deep enclosed cockpit full of water never happens anymore. Also, a fast boat and good decision making in combination with accurate up to date forecasts make it much safer to cross oceans than it once was. As you yourself and many others have shown. Thanks for another inspiring video and a story well told.

Patrick, I love your boat, your solar panel set up and your thirst for adventure. My grandmother told me there is a big difference between loneliness and solitude. Thank you so much for sharing your boat tech, adventures and time 🫡

So happy that you made it to Newfoundland Patrick... and that you were treated like royalty at the Royal Newfoundland YC in Conception Bay. Enjoyed your story about your NL connection and sensed the emotion as you turned off the camera. Very poignant. The Americans had a major wartime presence in St. John's, Argentia, and Stephenville (where I currently live). I hope your visit here brought a sense of intimate satisfaction as you walked on the same soil where your parents once walked before you.

I remember my father talking about St. Johns, Gander and Goose Bay..... It was his military assignment just after the war. My mother was a local school teacher (originally from Ontario). It was great to visit, even briefly, "my roots". :-) Thanks for commenting JM.

Some tears, some fears.... And your healthy... This is not the time to discuss this, but we all getting older. I'm 65, enjoying this video in a small harbour in Flekkefjord, waiting for fair winds, as a single handed sailor like you. Not to compare with your adventures, but the time, left to us, this is the sam e problem. Your files are becoming more and more personal, I think that's good.

I like all your videos Patrick. You inspire so many of us. But this was special. You didn’t just show us the inner workings of the very seaworthy Alessia, nor the interior passing of your voyage, you gave us the privilege of glimpsing into your own heart. And that is special indeed. Thank you.
