Hello sailors this is a great reportage of your trip to my island. Good seamanship, right decisions and a great speed. - I sail a Contest 38s Ketch myself. And in such conditions I appreciate the mizzen, which gives more stability in the direction of cruise. What happened to you with the Hydrovane fortunately does not happen with my Windpilot Pacific. Well I have chosen this equipment. I hope this is not the last video from you. Have a good trip, good wind all the time.

That's a great looking boat, Thomas! Hydrovane customer service has been great. I think the problem is mine as the skipper - the part that came loose has suffered in the sunshine for 7 years and just needed replacing sooner. I should have gone over the whole system before we left.

Burning out a starter motor and losing all engine power a few days into an Atlantic crossing, I would have returned and repaired the engine. Imagine being becalmed with a ship bearing down, or running aground on the Azores due to hurricane force winds. Disasters are usually the result of a number of small contributing factors. Great ocean photography, well sailed.
@theoddvoyage Жыл бұрын
I agree with your point - a return might just have been more prudent. But for me the primary concern was entering port, which had to happen once either way. Either behind us in Bermuda or ahead of us in the Azores. The Bermuda reefs and narrow entrance to St George's felt like a risky option, and I saw from the pilot book that our target in the Azores was easier to enter and could offer tows. If we had to continue past the Azores for weather, there were a lot of follow-up options as we were prepared to stay out much longer. And you're right about the cascade of smaller things creating larger issues. We were just lucky that none of our separate issues cascaded.
