Matt Landis, I too believe in providing a service to the most vulnerable and at times, the forgotten people. Once a upon a time, I was a pure Capitalist ( with a capital "C"), but now I see myself as a Social Capitalist who manages an organisation that takes care of individuals with intellectual disabilities and Autism just outside Pittsburgh. Watching a video like this pleases me know that they are people and communities out there wanting to bring happiness and hopefulness to some of our individuals. People like you and your team are out there tirelessly discovering and developing ways to make our indidivuals feel and fit into our community and society. I salute you, and your team for the continued services you strive to assist and help those who desperately want to be part of the norm.

Not sure how many will see this, 6 years after the posting of this video, with times being so incredibly different. I'm still so incredibly proud of my father. I'm so lucky he's my dad, and I hope he will be in every life after this one. He continues to be amazing, and inspire every day just by existing. Love you Dad, thank you for always fighting to be the person you are, even more so for fighting for ME to be able to be the person I am. I wouldn't be half the person I am without you.

I'm sitting here and there's a universe of words that mean only the best the things I can't think of which one, or even if just one or two, would describe Matt Landis' contribution to a better world. I'll just toss it out there that probably a vast majority of all those words that impart goodness and kindness are fit--and that simply saying good and kind is not enough. Thank you so much for this work of inspiration. My son Ian is autistic; he's not verbal, though my wife and I worked with him. I spend a large part of my time trying to come up with ways to make his world better because his brother and sisters can experience the satisfaction of playing games on the Nintendo DS systems. He holds a single string that he likes to change in shape. He likes dance music. I've bought electronic devices to attempt a connect to his thoughts in that way. But mostly I hold him tight and when I see him smile, I know that he knows that I love him.

Google thank you! Matt! Thanks for your spirit and to your family for supporting you. Can you speak more tactically about your journey from how you got from redoing elementary math when you came home to programming in Android? Walk us through that learning path a bit more. I think many others would benefit from it including myself. Thanks again for your service for our country.
@jlandis006 жыл бұрын
William Figueroa, I'll try to be economic in my description. Once I knew I was having issues with short term memory, I started practicing math on Khan Academy (a great site for anyone that wants to brush up on their math skills at any level). I really did start all the way back at elementary level math, trying to figure out what was going wrong in my brain. I learned how to annotate my work on a problem so that when I lost my place, or forgot what I'd done to get to a certain point, I could resume the problem without starting over. It was really a slow, trial and error process, just like learning it the first time as a kid. Once I had figured it out, gotten back to a Calculus 1 level of proficiency, I applied to the University of Pittsburgh engineering program. Once accepted there, I eventually chose computer and electrical engineering on the advice of my mentor and boss, Dr. Rory Cooper, and some other professors in the schools of neuroscience and rehab science. As I obtained my degree, I understood several projects that introduced me to the power of Google's open source ecosystem. One of these was an app for my son to search the internet by choosing words from a constantly changing word cloud. Each time he chose a word, the cloud would update to show contextually relevant words related to the string at that point, cross-reference with a dump from the Twitter stream (in an attempt to ensure the words were also location and culturally relevant to my son). I did this using a combination of Google App Engine and their Big Data tools, and Android as the interface. As I began working at HERL, I saw that we were using too many different tools, and consequently different languages, and it was slowing collaboration. It also meant we were developing our own custom libraries for many things that already existed for free in Android. While this is true of many systems, Android is free, has a huge community of developers, and finally because Pitt teaches most of their core Computer Science courses in Java, Androids language. This meant most of our people have at least been exposed to it, even if they're not CS students. So that's the shortest explanation I can offer for how I went from basic math to Android. I hope it's helpful. If I can help point you in the right direction for something you hope to do, don't hesitate to reach out on here. If I don't know how to help, I'm sure some of the others on here will.

When he talks about when the military was the last time he felt like he was good at something. I completely agree with him there. I didn't just feel like I was good at what I did. I know I was good at what I did and it showed when people appreciated my efforts and skills. I was in a military career most people either hated being in. Or just kinda was ok with it. Bradley mechanic. I loved my job. I loved working on Brads and even the M1 on occasion. But my favorite job was doing recovery work. Driving the M88a1s. The HMMT wreckers. I miss doing my job and being around the people I worked with daily. I now feel like theres a gaping hole in my sense of being now. I tried to get that feeling again in the civilian world as a mechanic. I went to school. I got my training. And when I went to work, I felt dead inside. I was really good at electrical troubleshooting. But I didn't enjoy the work I was doing. I didn't really like the people I worked with. I just felt empty. My disabilities from my service ended up causing me to be fired. And then I couldn't find work with other companies due to the meds I was on. If I didn't have my dad looking out for me. I would be homeless right now. I am at a loss as to what I am supposed to do now. My meds cause me to wake up sick every day. My body is in constant agony now and its hard to walk. I feel like a fool now for pushing myself so hard when I was younger and wanting to see what my limits were physically and professionally. Now I am in my early 40's and my body feels like its in its late 80's. I don't talk to friends much anymore and I haven't dated in years due to the constant pain and lack of self confidence I now have due to being this age but barely able to do much. lol WTF happened to me in Iraq?
