Hi Shelby! I wonder if you could put a little eye hook in the top-center of the hole? You would then be able to hang a little wooden craft disc from it. You could use them as garden markers to write your plants on, a placeholder for a (themed) party to write names on, or whatever your heart desires. You could also glaze them for holiday themes and hang a little holiday related charm from them? Just some things that came to mind while watching. Cute pieces, as always.

napkin rings make a lot more sense in a pre-paper towel society. when you think about more limited or harder access to clean water for washing, the time it takes to make cloth to even have towels in the first place, it means youd want to reliably know if a towel is still good to use, and you would be using them regularly.

We had similar cow napkin rings when I was a child, with a matching salt and pepper shakers, and my grandma had chicken napkin rings, also with matching shakers. After the napkins were taken out, we usually used the rings to place forks and knives, so they wouldn't touch the table.

My Mom only used napkin rings when she had holiday dinners at her home. She'd go all out... Matching napkin rimgs, plates, tablecloth, decorations, etc. ❤ You're absolutely correct, the napkin goes on the right side unless you put it directly above/on the plate. I wouldn't put these on the plate, but simple ones, yes.
@pcbassoon3892 Жыл бұрын
The napkin goes on the left... Knife and spoon on the right, knife with the blade turned in towards the plate, spoon on the outside. Fork and napkin go on the left unless napkin is decorative on the center of the plate, which is acceptable with a napkin ring. Napkin does not go on the right.

I was born in 1982. We had napkin rings for decorative purposes. When not using the kitchen table, the table was still set with decorative napkins & napkin rings. Plus, the table would be set with them at Thanksgiving & Christmas with them, too. They are less & less common, but still definitely a thing people do... at least at holiday time.

My MIL used to use napkin rings for special occasions. She had a set of Christmas trees she’d put paper napkins through. We gave her a set of bunny ones when our children were born so they could come over at Easter and have bunny napkin rings on her table. The kids are all grown (college-aged) and my MIL passed a couple of years ago, but we still have the napkin rings even though we don’t really use them anymore.

My family has a big collection of napkin rings of lots of different styles because my mom loves setting beautiful tables. (We're religious Jews and have 'dinner parties' every single week and use napkin rings regularly.) I often see napkin rings at my friends places for our gatherings so I thought it was normal, but I could live in an outlier community. Really interesting that you said the intention of them was to help differentiate people's places because my experience has been that they are nearly always the same. Having different ones for each place is notable. I really like them because they guarantee that you have something to play with at the table. Though pottery napkin rings don't look like they lend themselves to that. Especially when they look as cute as yours the temptation is maddening!

In my family, growing up, the point of a napkin ring (usually crocheted with our name embroidered) had the purpose of identifying each of us' fabric napkin, because we'd be using the same one for the week or so. It's not like we were using them that much that we'd need a new one after each meal 😄

Agreed. Parents still do this. But for me what makes the cow useless is that it would be easy to pull off the napkin and knock over the porcelain cow onto the floor and break it. In my experience most people at home don't use napkins at all. And so the only place you see them is at restaurants where they are washed after every person so you don't need a ring. Or at a kids party where they are disposable. I have napkins but don't use them.

At the end of the meal they would tuck the napkin into their personal napkin ring to mark it for the next meal. I use paper napkins at most meals, and so really have no need for napkin rings. When I do use cloth napkins, it's just for one fancy meal, so I really have no need for napkin rings. I wonder if there's some other good use for the things.

When I was in college, I would have lunch with a nun whose family had sponsored a scholarship I received. She had a zebra napkin holder that was gifted to her on a trip to Africa. She is the only person I’ve known to use a napkin holder. It was used to make sure that she knew which napkin was hers at each meal in the convent’s cafeteria. It also helped me when I would pick up her silverware to know which ones were hers. ❤️

I grew up seeing them in the department stores, like for formal dinners like the holidays. We never got them or used them in my family. From what I saw they were always matching sets, so that idea of making your napkin distinct isn't something we did over here in the States. It was just a way to fancy up the table settings. I absolutely love what you did with the little cows. I think the purple one and the milkshake are my favorites.

I'd make a new mold of the one you still have! And at first I was like, would I use a napkin ring? But when I saw it in it's proper setting, ON the plate with the napkin in it... it was absolutely perfect and it really does finish the table setting. It's SO much fun. I can imagine other kinds of holders, too, christmas, easter, birthdays, etc. I'd not use this for every day settings though, unless were a napkin person all the time perhaps. 😁

This was my thought too! For some of the broken moulds, you could make a silicone cast of the ones you can pour, and make a plaster cast... I know it seems like quite a bit of work, but it would be awesome to save some of the moulds that are cute, but not in the best shape! I think it would also not be as difficult as it seems.

I think the issue with that is that the drying and firing process shrinks the final piece so making a new mold out of this will be much smaller.

I'm 53 and have used napkin rings before. However they were for "dress up" occasions, and holidays. Some people prefer to use cloth napkins over paper ones, and the napkin holders/rings, help with that, they also (as you mention) tell a person's place setting, and too are for long-table dinner parties. We may think they are out of fashion, but they are not for others who always set a table with cloth napkins. We have them in different stores here for parties and holidays. Just depends on how fancy ya wanna be. ; ^D

So I just found you this past weekend and am watching back through a lot of your old videos. I find them so soothing (love your voice, tone, accent... I"m from Oklahoma, USA). My grandmother had a lot of different napkin ring sets; she entertained a lot. Hers were all sets that had identical rings and all had 36 rings (we had a huge family.) Eventually, we started using paper napkins (but the nicer ones) and metal trays that had disposable liners that laid on top of them. There were always far too many dishes to do when family got together or when she had any of her guests or hosted a dinner. These are so cute! The napkins go on the left side or in the middle of the plate in a formal table setting, which is informatin that served me well as a kid when helping at her house, but is useless information now. I will never set a formal table as an adult (I'm 51 and haven't set one since she passed away 13 years ago and my family is super small.)

I can’t unsee the resemblance now, but I do love the cow product themed items! That same theme could be used on other cow themed items you have, like the gravy boat or whatever that cow shaped pouring piece was? My mom actually has a few different styles of napkin rings and she just likes to dress up the table sometimes. One of my favorites are rings made of pottery in the shape of a lily, where the stem touches the flower to make a hook. The flowers are white, with a yellow stamen and green leaves and stems. Dressing up a table isn’t my cup of tea, but it does looks nice!

I really do think that napkin rings were are generational thing, I definitely remember my grandparents on my moms side throwing big family gatherings, with the whole table decor setup, napkin rings, a centerpiece, water glasses and wine glasses and all the different silverware and place setting plates. I always loved going to those parties as a little girl, I would get to wear big frilly dresses and once in a while my Grammy would put rouge on my cheeks!! So nostalgic!! All that because of your napkin rings 😂😂❤ ILY Shelby❤❤

I remember having them in my and relatives' houses, when I was young, but they were only used for special occasions. Also some restaurants use them.

I have a set of carved wooden napkin rings that I use when hosting holiday dinners but they are just decorative for setting the table, once everyone sits down and removes them their only function is decorative ❤
