Ep 68 - Ferry Glide

An update on the trip so far (in a way stopped by the weather) and in the meantime some advice on ferry gliding.

Ferry or Fairy gliding I was taught this technique in a canoe as a method of crossing fast flowing currents, more than fifty years ago now. Has come in handy many a time in all sorts of boats. Just requires a little practice. Another useful skill is sailing backwards, surprising just how many sailing folk unaware of this method of moving a boat.and how useful it can be in tight channels, getting on and off a quay.

Don’t rush guys. You can easily spend a week in Carrick Roads and not visit the same place twice. Also you must visit the Helford River. Free anchorage off the small hamlet of Durgan, or visitors moorings off Helford village. A pint of Tribute in The Shipwights Arms ❤

Good plan to stay in the Fal today or ferry gliding in the Yealm would become hang gliding of Lands End!

It was all a bit breezy - now trying to estimate how long it will take for the sea state to drop to something palatable

Yes absolutely, also very handy for getting in between two boats parked quite close together.

Hi, really enjoying your videos. What were the conditions (wind direction/speed, sea state etc) for the passage from the yealm to the river fal. What time did you leave in regards to HW? Hope you don’t mind the questions but I am planning to do the same passage in a few weeks time :-) Haven’t sailed round there before.

Hiya, it was a south-easterly wind at about force 4/5. Also the journey is about 40 miles and therefore we were going to be able to do it on one tide so we left in order to pick up the start of the ebb in the channel. Important to consider, however the state of tide at the departure and arrival harbours. On the south coast, particularly wind against tide at harbour entrances can be tricky.
