The problem with a deposit is that so many people in service are flaky and will cancel on you in a minute and they have all these upcharges, but don't provide good customer service or uphold their end of the deal. So, they have part of your money and you have nothing

I don't mind paying a deposit. I don't like when the deposit is nonrefundable. On principle, I haven't booked with someone who is highly recommended because on her site, deposit is nonrefundable no matter when you cancel

The CIK stylist also had a philosophy of not being open many hours because the $ would be in the service. That was one of the selling points of this method: you work less. So the one near my house, featured on the website before CIK took all them down, at some point was not even open on Sathurdays. For me I would go anywhere, see anyone that can do natural hair. when i was getting my hair braided, I would come with my clean, blown out hair because I did not want to be there all day and I did not trust the braiders with my hair. I enjoyed this episode. Re the old school salon, i don't think that they will make a comeback unfortunately. Regarding the need for community, i agree with you that it was great to be able to keep abreast "the culture" regardless of class. I particularly enjoyed the multigenarational aspect given that i wasn't living close to my family. What my stylist has done is create a space where specialists rent a booth or a private room (you have a braider, a straight natural person, a curly hair specialist etc.). It saves you shopping around for services and give you that sense of community. Unfortunately such luxury has a cost so its not as diverse as the old salon but it's something.

This format is cool! ❤ No to more police. Invest in communities, the schools, after school activities, green spaces, supervised youth activities, housing subsidies, housing communities with childcare, so many better options.

I don't mind the deposits but I don't like when the vibe given is that only the stylist's money and time is important. There should be an air of graciousness and customer service even with their demands. I also don't like when they charge $100 just to look at your face and the rest is on their whim whatever they want the final amount to be. Tell me the cost preferably before I arrive but definitely before each item. I went to an old school salon recently and was pleasantly surprised. No style seat, no website, no pre registration and credit cards, no list of bad behavior to not do etc. Just mutual trust, respect and courtesy

Do stylists like the old school salon experience?? The volume and labor aren't selling points for stylists. I grew up with the old school salon. As a child, I had no choice. It was what it was. As an adult though I have no interest in being in a salon all day, when I know I could be done with my hair comfortably in less than 2 hours and if I just had to go fast, I could be done in an hour, back then. I think stylists have improved their business acumen and learned for themselves that setup wasn't the best for them. And that's why we have what we have now. I don't mind multiple stylists in a salon as long as they are timely. Being 1:1 doesn't guarantee timeliness. With our phones and social media, I don't know that everyone would be communal in a salon. They'd be on their phones. Someone would have to be intentional about creating that communal experience. And yes stylists do many things to weed out certain clientele. Deposits, salon prep instructions, higher prices etc. This has to be a mutually beneficial relationship. As clients, we only see our perspective. What I don't care for is long lead times for appointments. Some stylists will leave some slots available for existing clients to keep standing appointments. But it can be a bear for a new client. I think we do need a franchise type setup to take care of people in the interim. It shouldn't be a chore to get basic styling.

I do have the Nivea sunscreen, recently I tryed ISA KNOX - UV Sun waterproof and It's just the best minus the smell of bergamot. I also use La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Dermo-Kids Sunscreen, yes it leaves a cast but I got it for a great price and use it before any active day to prevent sunburn and even with that sometimes my ears get burn. Reapplying is a challenge....

I use black girl kids sunscreen on my neck/body and the matte 45 on my face. I definitely understand and agree with what you're saying about voting and policing. I live a street over from the chief of police. I'm physically far removed from that little black girl that grew up one day from broke. However, my emotional intelligence didn't totally leave the building. I haven't forgotten food insecurity and the plethora of other pains that come with being black and poor. I vote for my friends and family members.

Great video and subjects. I looove old school salon, they just need to make some improvement and I'm sure few of them will survive for the old school syling. In my city, I've tried all the new place, black hair specialists if you will and the price are just not doable. So now, I visit once a year during summer to get a trim and mainatin a certain lenght (can't stand long hair). Brainding salon are another thing, I hate the attitude, the pulling and talking on the phone while doing my head...

Joulzey did a video on this I think it was about a year ago. We should watch it during a live. I miss beauty salon culture. Being a kid and listening to adult conversations heard under the hair dryer. White salons do the ala carte thing. I would ask my friends growing up how much they paid for their hair abd it would be like $20 when at the time to get my hair done would be $70. They wash their hair at home too. But it is hard to find a stable hair dresser.

Another great episode! I remember really disliking my salon experiences so whether they come back or not (doubt they will) I’m not going back unless it’s a very special occasion. On another subject, can you make green smoothie! I've tried to mix kale and mango whitout succes, horrible taste. I use 1part oat flake, 2part fruits, chia seed or flaxseed, green protein, ginger or citron and water.
