When Wiz lost the grammy to Angelique Kidjo, many Nigerians said rightly, he didn't deserve it because Angelique sang about endsars and African struggles and Wiz didn't. My response to those people on Twitter then was, creators cannot be forced to speak about a specific theme, rather, your experiences and realities. Art can be about anything. Heck, a late popular Turkish poet painted a vivid picture with words about fellatio otherwise known as blowjob. People talked, but the guy won awards for it. It is art (in this case, written); your ability to connect, create an experience using words. People should get education.

Please ask Melody how many politically-charged songs Beyonce has dropped. Another thing Melody should remember is that Burna’s greatest hits aren’t politically charged-songs neither do they have “substance.” People in diaspora mostly sing rubbish when singing Burna’s greatest hits because they don’t understand the lyrics (he sang them mostly in pidgin fgs ) and can’t tell if it has “substance” but it connects. Melody, if it connects then it has substance. Period!

I concur with Tolani's sentiment. The homeboy lacks the intellectual capacity to engage in such a discussion. Hollywood often portrays America in a positive light, despite the fact that it falls short of those ideals. They seldom depict stories of individuals enduring homelessness and the struggles faced by the less fortunate on the grand screen. The emphasis seems to be more on presenting themselves as a paradise rather than acknowledging the harsh realities that exist.

Who says “substance” must be politically-charged songs? I understand that Melody wants it to be a conversation, but it is a nuanced one like Tolani said and it shouldn’t be dumbed down to a simpleton-like summary like Burna said on that Apple Music interview. It has to be contextualized. At the end of the day, “substance” is subjective. What you consider substance, I may not give two fucks about. The white people streaming Burna’s songs enmasse, do they give two fucks about the politics in Nigeria? No. But they like them because the songs are properly marketed and they connect with the songs.

But doesn’t it matter if they write or not ? Most of the A-list Artists/superstars in the world don’t write their songs . Most songs over the world doesn’t have substance!!! What’s the meaning of “wap” by cardiB? A lot of modern Artists in USA doesn’t even have meaningful lyrics. So, melody should come with facts and not just talk because she wants to have an opinion.
@Musicbender1
@Musicbender1 11 ай бұрын
We should first of all define substance, i don’t think substance is all about dope poetic lyrics, the meaning of substance can’t be tied down to a particular set of style or themes. I mean some music don’t even have lyrics and it still connects to people and they enjoy it and feel something. Will you say those kind of music don’t have any substance? Music is too broad for substance to have a definitive meaning. If you wanna sing about politics and suffering, sing.. doesn’t make someone singing about women have less substance, y’all are simply singing about different things and have different form of substance. By the way, it’s easy to start chaos 😂
