I can still remember my first trip away to sea which was 51 years ago. We sailed from Rotterdam, to Sweden. Then from Sweden to the Persian Gulf and if you remember the Suez Canal was closed then so it was all around Africa. Yes had my sea legs before crossing the dreaded Bay of Biscay. Good one Gemma thats a trip you will never forget for the rest of your life.

As a kid my father worked in construction and was posted to The Gold Coast on 18 month stays, back to UK for 3 months and out again. Mum my sister and I went with him on one trip, sailing from Liverpool to Takoradi W. Africa 1950, though only 5 years old I do remember parts of the trip. We flew back on BOAC a four prop plane and had to refuel in Tripoli and Rome, landing in Heathrow that only had RAF buildings. In 1995 I bough a 1930s boat built in Castleford and spent three weeks taking her home from the Medway where she was based in WWII as a parachute mine patrol boat. We called into Lowestoft on the way up the E Coast mooring on the yacht club jetty's, I've lost count of the times I've moored in Ramsgate. So these videos bring back lots of great memories and your comment did as well, Thanks for that.

5 tall ships came to Cleveland Ohio a few years ago. They allowed us to tour the ships while they were docked. Their crew were doing the same thing around Lake Erie. So cool. Good job Gemma.

Hi what a great experience I actually sailed on The Malcolm Miller tall ship in the 70's we sailedfrom Newhaven to Cherbourg to East Anglia first leg we were all heaving as it was a force 7 gale so could not get to the channel isles. So glad you enjoyed the time try a square rig next time and go out on the spares as night in good wind

well done Gemma, enjoyed the video for different reasons, Having fitted out a 40 ' yacht, with my wife and sailed the east coast of Austrlia from Tasmania to Thursday Island , with chronic sea sickness, ending up in hospital for a week in Sydney, still carried on ! I built a model of a Baltic trader 'lilla Dan ' and to finally see one sailing was a joy, been following your 'hobby' from the start keep up the pace , you make my Saturday mornings each week tregards tone

That was awesome Gemma. Makes me wish I was young enough to go. Considering it was the North Sea you were really lucky. I was on a ferry from Harwich to Bremerhaven in the late 70's in November and the sea was awful and we had only one engine. 23 hours. I was ill! However, it was great to see the rigs at night all lit up. When we went to Belfast from Liverpool (again winter) again rough crossing but I took my pill and was out for the count that time! Good on you climbing the rigging and getting to the top, I don't have a head for heights but I love flying...go figure? Well done!!

Best tip when suffering sea sickness, stay on deck, eat dry toast, drink plenty of water and repeat until the sickness stops and the toast stays down. Nothing wrong with being sick over the side as the fish will eat it. During this process imagine a ship rocking up and down in your mind and it helps the brain understand. The main cause of sea sickness is your brain picking up movement via your ears but your eyes not seeing that movement. A great video and a route i have taken many times. I've taken 8 hour watch duties up that coast on the M.V Argo-G one of the last coasters that once filled the horizon. Bulk carriers and container ships killed the coasting industry which employed thousands of merchant seaman. I hope to see Sarinda doing a tour around the British Isles once she is restored. 👍

I enjoyed this episode very very much. In Camden, Maine, USA they have a group of sailboats that are in the Maine Windjammer Association. Included in that fleet is Schooner Lewis R. French, which is 151 years old this year. We have sailed on her twice. It does not have an engine onboard (it does have a small boat with a small diesel engine, a push trawl/tug that can push it when it is becalmed). They sail in Penobscot Bay, which is protected by some barrier islands, so it is relatively calm sailing. We did have a day or two where people prone to seasickness had issues; but, my wife and I never did. We only sailed during the day, so staying on deck, and looking out at the horizon I found helpful. In your video though you had some rolling seas that we did not experience to that degree, you had much more rolling side to side, it was like you were in a washing machine. Plus sailing in the dark I am sure added to the propensity for one to get seasick. It is definitely a fun experience.

WHAT a GREAT experience! One of my Bucket List items is to get to Halifax (Nova Scotia) and go aboard the Schooner Bluenose II - a Canadian Icon (It's even on our dimes!). Sorry to hear about your seasickness - Both Ginger and mint are good to help settle your stomach. I always keep a little Candied Ginger around for when my stomach is upset. Probably a great plan for the kids when you get sailing on Sarinda! The Navigation lessons will probably be Invaluable, too!

Hi, Gemma loved watching your journey on the tall ship and your Ship Happens videos. Interesting you talking about Sirinda being once called Valient, my Grandfather was on HMS Valient during World war 1 and at the battle of Jutland thankfully he survived otherwise I wouldn't be here.

I know how you feel. I had the opportunity to do a 3 hour cruise on a tall ship. Opportunity of a life time. As soon as we left the heads I was preying for the 3 hours cruise to turn into a 3 minutes minute cruise.

I hate sea sickness. The head goes hot and your sweat glands in your mouth works overtime, saliva builds up in your mouth. Then all of a sudden you can see again what you had for breakfast 😂 Don’t envy you there 😂 👍👍 A colleague of mine had been seasick for the whole voyage, he spent his trip lying on his bunk. Even when we took the jolly boat ashore in the bay. He was still vomiting. The captain suggested to him to find a shore job.

you missed out at lowestoft. about 100 yards away from where you were docked they were rebuilding an MTB, though they may have finished by now. i lived there 12 years ago and that bascule bridge was a pain

Sea sickness yep been there North Sea crossing from Aberdeen to Lerwick on the St Clair in the 80s berthed at the back of the ship near the top deck next to the aft stair well which went right to the cargo deck where the fish wagons were… maximin move the stinking of rotten fish… … best place was I found the centre of gravity down on the lower decks half way across the beam and about half way along the length of the ship and lay on my back, minimum movement and I was good.. never been so sick it’s horrible isn’t it hope you’re sea legs kicked in quick xx

If you wanted some real "fun" you go up the ratlines but down the backstay.... all without a harness. Then you get the "genuine" experience of an Olde Timey sailor. It's funny how many people's frame of reference for sailing is what they've "learned" from Pirates of the Caribbean. Master and Commander is a better reference point. That was pretty awesome seeing Valiant and her relationship to Sarinda. The sweeps (oars) on that dinghy need to be longer by a foot or more. Yeah I'm nit-picking lol.

It looks like your ship could do with a few more crew to haul on the lines when needed. They should consider doing what the Royal Navy used to do. Send out the press gang to round up a few drunken sailors staggering out of the local seaport Grog Shops. Check with the local constabulary and I am sure they would pick up a few volunteers. Nothing is more motivated than a poacher or smuggler offered a choice of prison or the adventure of a life at sea.
