Game management is so much more difficult in youth soccer -- especially in the mid-range of say U10-U15 or thereabouts. It's the ill-informed and unsportsmanlike parents that are largely to blame -- and in my experience, the worst offenders are generally moms. It's a much easier task controlling an adult match. One fond memory involved watching an adult match in a very sketchy part of town. There was a wino not far from the sidelines, and he was loudly harassing one of the center backs. The ref blew his whistle to stop play. He came over to the sidelines and told the wino to get lost. The guy refused. The ref then said "If you don't leave RIGHT NOW, I'm calling the game -- and ALL these guys behind me will be p***ed off and coming after YOU!" The wino disappeared in like 5 seconds! LOL!! THAT's what I call game management, and the voice of experience!

That is one confusing field with all those lines and colors....

Multi-purpose fields are unfortunately a very necessary evil. Makes playing on a well-manicured grass pitch feel like heaven.

Early on, you called handling and said it was an easy call. But you describe the situation as the ball bouncing up and hitting the players arm (non-deliberate contact). From the video, the player’s arm did not seem to be making his body unnaturally bigger. If the player didn’t deliberately play the ball with his arm, if his arm wasn’t making his body unnaturally bigger and if a goal wasn’t scored directly from the contact, why do you deem this to be handling?

It is a good question. In this case I felt the arm did make his body unnaturally bigger (though not by a lot, it was close). When I saw it I saw the arm out a bit from the body with the arm a bit pointing to the side rather than a normal running motion. It is close though, but I called that one for unnaturally bigger position.

Consider what it means for referee teamwork when (at 6:57) you say in your pregame, "give me first crack on contact in the box" - without specifying how "first crack" starts and stops. You're negating potential proximity advantage of your AR to assist you with foul recognition - even when you and your AR2 have extensive experience/comfort level as to what makes a foul. Would you consider trying, "if you're 100 percent confident that it's a foul, consider advantage before flagging it - but then 100 percent flag it." You also may try selling the teamwork aspect as a way to defuse the coach confrontation. "Coach, I don't have it as a foul, and the AR in front of the challenge doesn't have it as a foul. We will keep working together throughout the game." Doing so will diminish the opportunity to feed the ego of the coach, lets him feel heard, and can quiet the verbal provocation that the coach may be instigating.

Great feedback! Definitely always trying to pick up new game management tools. Will give this a try.

At 23.18 the girl ar is explaining why she called offside on black number 2. Using the blue lines, clearly it shows a white player, closest to the ar, that puts the black number 2 onside. Even with the video footage you couldn’t see this? 😂

I took another look. I don’t think this is nearly as clear as you are implying. It looks so close I don’t think you can tell from the camera footage at this angle. The player very well could have had a foot beyond the line. She explains this in the review and it’s kind of exhibit A of why being on the line is critical.

@@reffingwiththesappersim pretty sure your looking at the wrong white player. I’m not talking about the white players on the blue line, im talking about the white player on the far side, well inside the blue box. He’s to your right as your running, near a black player. I thinks it’s the guy that should have received a second yellow card. His body is about 10 feet inside the blue box. The black player that was called offside is about 3 feet inside the blue box. Of course it’s any part of the body can put you onside not just the feet.

I like these, might be helpful to review games where your kids aren't AR's, plus it might be good for their development. A lot of us referee with our kids, but it is important to get other views and perspectives to learn and grow. (I've only seen a few videos, maybe this isn't always the case).

Thanks for watching and the comment! We do mix in some reviews here where we work with others. Part of the reason so many of these end up on the channel though is we most often film the games where we work together and we only review games where one of us is the CR or the CR joins us to review their own games. Given we aren’t accredited assessors, we are just doing a self review here and not reviewing others. That makes more of these videos the ones we work together.
