Family secrets can create a strong bond, or be divisive. When William and Beth bond over special brownies, a major secret is spilled: Rebecca and William have known each other all this time with no one, not even Randall, the wiser. Meanwhile, also divisive is that of the relationship between Randall and Kevin. It all comes to a head, and so as we break down the episode, we also break down familial relationships and discuss the moral responsibilities we face within our own family networks.

"This Is Us" became more than a TV show; it became a companion on my path to healing and self-discovery. The show's exploration of loss, forgiveness, and the power of human connection offered me a sense of hope and resilience during times of uncertainty and despair. Thank you guys

While I fell in love at first sight with the pilot, I think this is the episode that solidified the show becoming one of my all-time favorites. I don’t know what it is, but the part where Rebecca reminisces about the washing machine at the end of the episode as we get a flashback of the younger triplets having a water fight in the basement with their parents when the washing machine acts up still makes me cry because there’s a palpable shift in the dynamics between all the characters and their relationships with each other. This was definitely the turning point for upcoming obstacles, such as how Jack forgot to kiss Rebecca goodbye that day for the first time, how she chose to talk about her rehearsal at another time (hinting at the climax at the end of the first season with their iconic one-take fight that threatens their marriage), and the growing rift between Randall and Kevin (possibly even the fallout at the end of season 4 and the first half of season 5)… even the subtle moment of Kate rebelling with putting on makeup (foreshadowing her toxic and abusive relationship with Marc). It’s just so different and sets everything else up perfectly well, in my personal opinion. On a lighter note, Beth and William getting high on those adult brownies was such a delightful scene! I couldn’t stop laughing :)

I had forgotten this was the first time we saw teenage Big 3! They were incredible from the jump and embodied the personalities of the adult actors perfectly.

They didn’t touch on Kevin’s comment to Rebecca, “why does he all of a sudden need to be on the football team”, like he resents Randall trying to excel at something that’s “his”.

My husband has gout and I can still go to lunch when he has a flare up. 😂 I didn’t even compute that was Rebecca’s excuse until Mandy just brought it up. That’s why I’m loving this podcast! So funny!

I had a tough conversation with my brother today. I looked into the show for strength to be able to talk without crying because something he wasnt aware of doing hurt my feelings deeply. I feel like this show gives me comfort to have real and honest conversations in my life. So Thank you! ❤️

Great episode! I really like how introspective Chris Sullivan is here when he says that Kevin provided the only acceptable response back to Randall when Randall pointed out that Kevin has never claimed him publicly as his brother. "That sucks." Validation and acknowledgement. That's it. That's why this show is so good. Jack and Rebecca showed their children accountability by owning up to mistakes, and then when the children become adults - they are able to do it too. Not perfectly, but they can. I had a half brother growing up that was 6 years older than me. I feel like he found my existence to be a nuisance.. and he never called me by my name, "Marissa," it was always "HER." He'd be talking about me to my parents and my dad would stop him and say, "who are you even talking about right now." "HER." That was painful for me, and seeing it happen on the show allowed me some time to process those memories and forgive. Thank you!

The callers story is literally the same as mine except my father was married with a whole family that didn’t know he was out cheating on their mother. My mother moved away to another state to get out of that situation, and of course as time went on I started asking questions about him. I found him in my 20’s and he literally just brushed me off. When he died I came out to his family, my siblings, and his wife and they all acted like I was the one that he cheated with. No happy ending in site but there are a couple siblings that have reached out to me. Life is crazy but none of us are alone in whatever we are going through. Thank you guys for this podcast/ channel!

This episode packed a punch...literally! The way in which Kevin and Randall's relationship evolved is so relatable. I identify with the sibling rivalry, and I loved that this was filmed in NYC...my home city. Sue and Ron's personalities blend so well and organically. I don't know what I would do if I were in her shoes knowing that Rebecca and William had an agreement to not share their secret with Randall. Great fan segment. This show really is a template for life.
